Book Venice in Environmental Peril

Download or read book Venice in Environmental Peril written by Dominic Standish and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venice and its environment are perceived to be in peril due to rising sea levels, tourism, and modern development. Are these threats myths or reality? This book explores Venice's environmental risks based on interviews with Venetian environmental campaigners and draws on the mythology of the Venetian Republic. Campaigners' opinions about the mobile dams nearing completion to protect the city reveal that Venice now represents an environmentally-threatened retreat from modernity. This reputation has been established as sustainable development and climate change policies have risen to the top of political agendas in many cities and countries. The book investigates how environmentalism has been transformed from a theory underpinning counter-cultural movements to part of a dominant holistic culture in Western societies. Rather than constraining Venice in search of a mythical harmony with nature, this book offers a ten-point proposal to modernize the city while preserving its ancient heritage.

Book Venice Shall Rise Again

Download or read book Venice Shall Rise Again written by Giuseppe Gambolati and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Venice, Italy, has been subjected to periodic flooding, or acqua alta, for centuries. Venice Shall Rise Again presents a unique proposition to halt this flooding. Based on years of work and experiment, experts Gambolati and Teatini describe an innovative yet technologically simple, economically inexpensive, and environmentally friendly project to raise Venice by 25-30 cm over ten years by injecting seawater into 650-1000 m deep geological formations. This project would be conducted under conditions of absolute safety, stability and integrity conserving the unique artistic and architectural patrimony of this deeply beloved city. Beginning with a brief history of the Venetian Republic, Venice Shall Rise Again addresses the actions undertaken by Venice to protect the city and the lagoon from the sea and land attack for more than a millennium, including the MoSE project, a system of mobile barriers presently under construction. Detailed in its engineering details and ideas, but with enough background information and context to help the interested reader understand the concepts, this book will be of interest to all readers concerned about the fate of Venice. Provides a history of the technical measures taken by the Venetian Republic to preserve the lagoon and the city or Venice Details technical specifications of a new method to secure Venice against periodic flooding

Book Tokyo and Venice as Cities on Water

Download or read book Tokyo and Venice as Cities on Water written by Rosa Caroli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other cities on water, Tokyo and Venice are characterised by intrinsic fragility, resulting from the combined work of the continuous emergence of technological, economic, social, and environmental forces, which affect the urban structure and landscape. Their tangible and intangible (material and immaterial) heritage can play a fundamental role in both maintaining their peculiar maritime identity and defining a future vision for the city. Accordingly, this volume focuses on how the rediscovery of water, from both architectural and cultural points of view, as well as the preservation of the historical and local character of the use of water, can contribute to new forms of resilience. The contributions from scholars, experts, and practitioners in various disciplines – from the social sciences and humanities to architecture and urban planning – that are brought together in this volume help to clarify the basic importance of maintaining and preserving the distinctive identity of two paradigmatic cases of cities on water.
