Book Spain and Its Literature

Download or read book Spain and Its Literature written by Ann L. Mackenzie and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides an Introduction, Bibliography and "Centenary Reappraisal", eighteen original articles by respected Hispanists from Britain, Spain and the United States have been collected in this homage volume. A high proportion of articles reflect Peers’ major interests in mysticism and the Romantic Movement. Part I, From the Middle Ages to the Siglo de Oro, includes essays that deal with Francisco de Osuna’s "higher memory", the "Dark Night" of San Juan de la Cruz, Judaeo-Islamic traditions in Luis de León and Miguel de Molinos’ Spiritual Guide. Part II, From the Dawn of Romanticism to the Twentieth Century, contains articles concerned with writers, works or themes as: Sánchez’s Colección and Percy’s Reliques, Rivas and tragedy, El moro expósito, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Victor Hugo and "La Nonne sanglante". An article, dealing comparatively with Goytisolo and Zorrilla, which provides "A Missing Link in the Dis-affiliation of a Post-Romantic Expatriate in Revolt?" aptly concludes the volume.

Book The Book of True Love

Download or read book The Book of True Love written by Juan Ruiz and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great ironic moral comedies of the late Middle Ages, Libro de Buen Amor holds a place in Spanish literature comparable with that of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in the English tradition. This edition presents, on facing pages, the Salamanca Old Spanish text (dated 1343) and the first English-language verse translation since 1933. The fictional autobiography of the picaro Archpriest of Hita, Juan Ruiz, is a treasury of fables and fabliaux, mock heroic allegory, joyous parodies of churchly and legal ritual--all digressions to the hilarious tale of the persistent but abortive adventures of the author as lover. Lord Love and Lady Venus advise with their Ovidian Arts of Love. The Archpriest himself consistently maintains that his "models for sinning" will be read virtuously by the virtuous though salaciously by the wicked--in this moral ambiguity resembling Boccaccio of the Decameron and Chaucer of the bawdier tales. Although the Salamanca text is used, as the most complete extant version of Ruiz's work, gaps are filled from the Gayoso manuscript, and variant readings are given from this and the Toledo fragment. Textual spellings are changed to conform with modern Spanish usage, but without sacrificing the phonological characteristics of Old Spanish. The translation (which starts from a draft by the late Hubert Creekmore) attempts to approximate the techniques of the medieval poet. Within the demanding limits of a verse form faithful to the original, the translation uses devices of medieval rhetoric, particularly wordplay. A Reader's Guide follows the text and translation, as a means of avoiding the distraction of line-by-line annotation, and an annotated bibliography leads to major critical themes and controversies still surrounding Ruiz. The introduction describes the poet's virtuoso display of poetic forms, which relate this intensely Spanish work to the literature of medieval Europe, and appraises the poet's consciousness as one relevant to modern social tensions.

Book Women Texts and Authority in the Early Modern Spanish World

Download or read book Women Texts and Authority in the Early Modern Spanish World written by Marta V. Vicente and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first essay collection to examine the relation between text and gender in Spain from a broad geographical, social and cultural perspective covering more than 300 years. The contributors examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. Women, Texts and Authority in Early Modern Spain focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities. The appeal of this collection is not limited to scholars of Spanish history and literature; it is deliberately designed to address the issue of how gender relations were constructed in the formation of modern society, and therefore will be of interest to scholars of women's and gender history generally. Because of the emphasis on how this construction occurs in texts, the collection will also be attractive to scholars interested in literary studies and/or print culture.

Book Te Presento a Jesucristo

Download or read book Te Presento a Jesucristo written by Samuel Macadam and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
