Book Teacher Pay and Teacher Quality

Download or read book Teacher Pay and Teacher Quality written by Dale Ballou and published by W. E. Upjohn Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks whether higher salaries have improved the quality of newly recruited teachers. It reviews data on the characteristics of beginning teachers and shows how important features of the labor market for teachers systematically undermine efforts to improve teacher quality. The text also offers a comparison of personnel policies and staffing patterns in public and private schools, focusing on national trends in teacher recruitment. It discusses ways to measure teacher quality, examines several indicators of quality, such as student achievement and principals' ratings of their staffs, and then uses these findings to assess the evidence on salary growth and teacher recruitment. It looks at what has gone wrong with teacher recruitment and offers an analysis of the operation of the teacher labor market so as to interpret findings. These results are used to review the implications for teacher recruitment of various other reforms of current interest. The text also describes the prospects for reform by examining salary differentiation and rising standards and assesses personnel policies in the private sector to see whether private schools offer a model for reforming public education. This section details teacher quality, working conditions, and compensation policies. The book concludes with a summation of its major points. (Contains an index, approximately 315 references, 12 data tables and 17 figures.) (RJM)

Book What Is the Relation of Academic Preparation Experience Intelligence Achievement and Sex of Rural Teachers in Mississippi to Their Pay

Download or read book What Is the Relation of Academic Preparation Experience Intelligence Achievement and Sex of Rural Teachers in Mississippi to Their Pay written by H. M. Ivy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is the Relation of Academic Preparation, Experience, Intelligence, Achievement, and Sex of Rural Teachers in Mississippi to Their Pay?: George Peabody College for Teachers Contributions to Education, Number Ten The inequality of educational opportunity in the United States is nowhere more in evidence than in the contrast be tween that afforded the urban child and that afforded the rural child. The concentration of wealth in corporate bod ies makes the taxes levied in cities for the support of edu cation in large part indirect. In the rural community the school tax is direct. The farmer is not willing to pay high costs for schools unless he can see a direct value being re turned. The teacher stands to him as a representative of what education can do for his boys and girls. Hence, the quality of rural education depends far more upon the qual ity of the teacher than does urban education. In general, the quality of any product is in proportion to the amount paid for it. This may be said to be true in regard to the rural teacher. If his salary is low, is his quality also low? In fixing his salary, what traits is society consciously and unconsciously seeking? We know and can measure some of these traits; others are known, but as yet unmeasured; still others are both unknown and unmeasured. When the traits that affect the pay of the rural teacher have been ascertained, it will be possible to find the effect of each. With the effect known, the proper treatment may be applied that will result in a general improvement of rural salaries. It is in the hope of making a beginning along this line that this study was undertaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Salaries and Salary Trends of Teachers in Rural Schools Bulletin 1929

Download or read book Salaries and Salary Trends of Teachers in Rural Schools Bulletin 1929 written by W. H. Gaumnitz and published by . This book was released on 1929 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The training, the tenure, and the professional status of teachers and other professional workers in the rural schools of America are to a large degree circumscribed by the rewards offered, both financial and social. It has long been recognized in a general way that such rewards in rural schools are meager in comparison with those in urban schools and in comparison with those in other gainful occupations. But the detailed facts have not been sufficiently known, and the relationships of these meager salaries to the educational opportunities of the rural child are not fully realized. This report shows the salary status of the teachers and other professional workers in the rural schools of the United States for the year 1924-25, and it shows the changes that have occurred in these salaries during a period of years. Sections of the report include (1) Introduction; (2) Sources and scope of study; (3) Proportion of counties reporting; (4) General survey of the numbers and percents of rural teachers receiving salaries of various amounts; (5) Salaries of teachers of rural schools compared with salaries of teachers in urban schools; (6) Comparative salaries of teachers and length of school term; (7) Cost of living and rural teachers' salaries; (8) Relationship of training to rural teachers' salaries; (9) Status and progress of salaries in rural schools considered by States; (10) Status and trends of salaries of rural school principals by States; (11) Salaries of county and other rural superintendents of schools in 1922 and 1928; and (12) Conclusions. (Contains 19 tables and 2 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.].
