Book excerpt: With Catwin’s help, Miriel has captured the heart of the King, but their victory has come at a cost: the suspicion and enmity of the Duke, and the unrelenting hatred of the Court. As they recover from the attempt on their lives, the two form a fragile alliance, promising that their first loyalty is to each other, and that their one goal is to survive. But to survive, Catwin and Miriel need power, and the search for power of their own draws them ever further into the Court and inexorably closer to the throne. Enemies surround them, ruthless and vengeful, and the only way forward is a dark path that threatens to sever them from themselves. For it is not only enemies that are a danger to Light and Shadow now, but the weakness of their own hearts. As she protects them both, Catwin struggles against her love for Temar, the Duke’s assassin; to capture the King’s heart, Miriel must forget both her love for Wilhelm, and her passionate belief in the populist uprising. A reckoning is coming, a betrayal that has been in the making for decades, and if they are to survive, both Catwin and Miriel must be prepared to give up everything they hold dear.

Book excerpt: Enjoy this chart-topping epic fantasy series by Sci-Fi & Fantasy author Moira Katson... It has been only two generations since Arthur Warden seized the throne of Heddred from the Conradines, and now the crown rests on the head of Garad, sickly and weak. Shadows gather: legacies of the centuries-long rivalries for power, old betrayals, the endless plots of the courtiers, and the murmur of rebellion in the southern provinces… Catwin, plucked from her life at the edge of the Kingdom, is thrust abruptly into the world of the Court when she is chosen by the Duke of Voltur to be a Shadow—spy, shield, and blade—to his niece, the Lady Miriel DeVere. The Duke’s ruthlessness is legendary, and he will stop at nothing to become the power behind the throne, using Miriel as a pawn to catch Garad’s heart. But the Duke's carefully-laid plans are only a piece of the intrigue of the court, and greater forces than Catwin can imagine are massed against her, determined to eliminate Miriel and impose a new order of their own. If Catwin and Miriel are to survive, they must learn quickly who to trust, and when to turn their skills against the very people who have trained them... *** KEYWORDS: female protagonist, epic fantasy, epic fantasy series, ya fantasy; sword and sorcery; coming of age; historical fantasy; SFF; YA series; enemies to friends

Book Dreams of Empire

  • Author : André Vachon

  • Release : 1982
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Dreams of Empire written by André Vachon and published by Public Archives of Canada. This book was released on 1982 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andre Vachon is clearly traditional in his choice of theme, selection of material, and the historical methods that he adopts. He expounds an older interpretation that accounted for the expansion of New France in terms of missionary zeal, the geographic imperative, economic necessity, and military security. Nothing is said that reflects the historical revisionism of the last two decades with its emphasis on self-interest and the personal pecuniary motive. The heroes are familiar: Cartier, Champlain, Talon, and Laval, but not Frontenac. The author raises no serious doubts about the desire on the part of these individuals for the expansion of New France, but he is forced to admit that by 1700 the colony had become too big and too fragile. Hardly a soul is criticized in the entire text. The general reader might be amused by knowing how cunning Amerindians duped Jacques Cartier or that Champlain never learned an Indian language and judged their conduct by the standards of French law rather than according to native customs he could never appreciate. ..."-- from review by T.A. Book The Storyteller s Daughter

Download or read book The Storyteller s Daughter written by Saira Shah and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that a jewel-like garden overlooking Kabul is your ancestral home. Imagine a kitchen made fragrant with saffron strands and cardamom pods simmering in an authentic pilau. Now remember that you were born in London, your family in exile, and that you have never seen Afghanistan in peacetime. These are but the starting points of Saira Shah’s memoir, by turns inevitably exotic and unavoidably heartbreaking, in which she explores her family’s history in and out of Afghanistan. As an accomplished journalist and documentarian–her film Beneath the Veil unflinchingly depicted for CNN viewers the humiliations forced on women under Taliban rule–Shah returned to her family’s homeland cloaked in the burqa to witness the pungent and shocking realities of Afghan life. As the daughter of the Sufi fabulist Idries Shah, primed by a lifetime of listening to her father’s stories, she eagerly sought out, from the mouths of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, the rich and living myths that still sustain this battered culture of warriors. And she discovered that in Afghanistan all the storytellers have been men–until now.

Book Doomsday Dreams

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eleanor Heartney
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-10-16
  • ISBN : 9780998956800
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Doomsday Dreams written by Eleanor Heartney and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Doomsday Dreams" uses international contemporary art as a lens to explore the allure, dangers and positive potential of present day apocalyptic thinking. Apocalypse is a double-edged concept, balanced between hope and despair, simultaneously encouraging the pursuit of justice and a starkly dualistic sense of good and evil. It underlies populist liberation movements and explains the attraction of authoritarian leaders. The artists discussed in "Doomsday Dreams" reflect on the ways that the modern world has been profoundly shaped by millennia-old conceptions of history as a struggle to the death between the forces of good and evil. These artists' draw on apocalyptic symbols grounded in religious conceptions of judgment, retribution, redemption and sin. They employ these ideas to ask: Why has Apocalypse become the fallback position when we are faced with calamity? How does it shape the way we deal with the world? When is Doomsday a useful metaphor and when does it foreclose more hopeful possibilities? These questions have profound implications for contemporary society. Ideas that originated in ancient Zoroastrianism and spread to the three monotheistic religions continue to define our reality today. The apocalyptic cults emerging within radical Islam are one manifestation, as are western obsessions with the "clash of civilizations." So is rhetoric of the Alt-Right that has gained currency since Donald Trump's election. Apocalyptic thinking impacts our debates over climate change, pandemics, immigration, and technology. It also underlies the popular fascination with Zombies, Armageddon and renewed fears of nuclear holocaust. The artists discussed in "Doomsday Dreams" come from diverse religious backgrounds. They employ many different media and exhibit varying degrees of religious belief. Together, they reveal how art can help us understand the complicated ideas and irresolvable contradictions that surround "Doomsday Dreams." This book brings together for the first time cultural studies, theology, world history, politics and philosophy. Heartney explores End Times symbolism, metaphor, irony and allegory in contemporary art and shows how artists are addressing the fearsome challenges that face us in a time of social, political and sectarian upheaval.
