Download or read book Hard Trials Great Tribulations written by James V. Lyles and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Lyles has written an absorbing memoir of his life, beginning as an impoverished child in Depression-era Arkansas and eventually becoming a highly educated and well-traveled religious leader of a major Protestant denomination. His story spans the most important era of African American advancement in the post-slavery period. He was an eyewitness as well as a participant in that half-century of the black liberation struggle... Growing up in rural Arkansas in the midst of the Great Depression, he describes an early life reminiscent of Erskine Caldwell's Tobacco Road of the 1930s and '40s. The account could serve as a documented history of African American life during that time. His narrative is written also against the backdrop of some of the most memorable civil rights incidents, such as the Little Rock High School integration riots and the killing of Emmett Till. Also, he relates in telling detail the little-reported story of the racial integration of Perkins School of Theology on the campus of Southern Methodist University--an event in which he was a participant. As an ordained clergyman, his adventures and misadventures, took him to small towns, large cities, college campuses, the armed forces, a foreign mission bureaucracy, and the continent of Africa, all of which he relates with remarkable candor. Jim Lyles's exciting memoir illustrates how many splendored a life of faith can be.

Download or read book Montreal City of Spires written by Clarence Epstein and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2012-03-19T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the fifty religious buildings discussed in this book, only a precious few remain standing despite the fact that Montreal boasts one of the largest and most eclectic groupings of Georgian and Victorian structures of any city in North America.Following the British conquest of New France in 1759 a remarkable series of transformations took place in the small, Catholic trading town of Montreal. Given the diversity of settlers forced to live side by side, the new church buildings that were to rise became strategic public spaces, meeting places as well as power bases. It was no wonder that by the time Mark Twain toured Canada’s first metropolis in the 1880s, he found that one could not throw a brick in the place without breaking a church window.By addressing the social, religious and architectural issues surrounding these colonial-era structures, it will become apparent that Montreal was at once a shining jewel in England’s imperial crown, a chief outpost of Catholicism in the New World, as well as the British North American headquarters for more than a dozen independent congregations.
Download or read book My First Years of Ministry written by Joseph Chandler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book my father started to write before his death in 1993. This book is about the first years of his 30 years of ministry within the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church. His appointments included: Waterloo - Soule Chapel, Galloway Memorial, Bath - Clearwater, Monaghan - Poe and Lupo Methodist. It was his desire for one day for them to be published. "He wanted to impart wisdom to those of us who have followed in the ministry." To help fulfill his desire to have his manuscript published: I have taken a copy of my father's manuscript and have sought to put them down in book format for him. He only was able to complete the first few years of his ministry down on paper before his death. Maybe that too was all in God's timing and the first years is what God desired to be recorded for others to learn. At the end of this book I have included the last sermon he gave just less than a month from his death. Also, I have shared a few memories I want to share with readers.

Download or read book The Black Loyalists written by James W. St. G. Walker and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a Canadian myth about the Loyalists who left the United States after the American Revolution for Canada. The myth says they were white, upper-class citizens devoted to British ideals, transplanting the best of colonial American society to British North America. In reality, more than 10 per cent of the Loyalists who came to the Maritime provinces were black and had been slaves. The Black Loyalists tells the story of one such group who came to Nova Scotia, but didn't stay. James Walker documents their experience in Canada, following them across the Atlantic as they became part of a unique colonial experiment in Sierra Leone.
