Book The Life of St Agnes of Rome

Download or read book The Life of St Agnes of Rome written by and published by . This book was released on 1856 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agnes of Rome was born to a wealthy family in ancient Rome, and was executed at a young age, having expressed her devotion to Christianity in the pagan Roman society. This biography was published in France in the 19th century by an anonymous author, and soon after translated to English. A narrative of Saint Agnes' life is given, with a further discussion of pertinent events in the centuries following her death. Together with the known incidents in the sainted Agnes' short life, an appendix assesses the authenticity and veracity of the Acts of St. Agnes, a document which appeared in the 5th century AD. The author explains the various references to Agnes in Latin, and the relics attributed to her. By the 4th century AD, Agnes had been venerated as a saint, and through the ages various artworks, icons and paintings have been created in her image. She is considered the patron saint of virgins, girls and chaste conduct, and a feast on January the 21st commemorates her life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Agnes of Rome: Virgin and Martyr Three centuries were gone by since the blood of Jesus Christ had flowed upon Calvary, and the blood of Christians, meanwhile, was flowing continually, without other cessation than that occasioned from time to time by the weariness of the executioners. Still, however, the Gospel had penetrated even to the extremities of the earth. Christianity had transformed'millions of souls; a new world was about to go forth as from a new creation; it seemed but to await a last moistening dew of the blood of martyrs in order to burst into existence. The time was ap preaching, in fine, when the ransom of the world would be complete; one, and the last install ment, so to speak, remained to be paid, and the redeemed world would belong openly to Christ. What was so unusual about a man who spent almost his whole life on one small island, more than two thousand years ago? Many things about Archimedes were unusual. His mind was never still, but was always searching for something that could be added to the sum of things that were known in the world. No fact was unimportant; no problem was dull. Archimedes worked not only in his mind, but he also performed scientific experiments to gain knowledge and prove his ideas.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR “Vivid, compelling... An embrace of moral and spiritual contemplation.” –The New York Times “A remarkable piece of writing. If read with humility and attention, Kathleen Norris's book becomes lectio divina, or holy reading.” –The Boston Globe From the iconic author of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, a spiritual journey that brings joy to the meanings of love, grace and faith. Why would a married woman with a thoroughly Protestant background and often more doubt than faith be drawn to the ancient practice of monasticism, to a community of celibate men whose days are centered on a rigid schedule of prayer, work, and scripture? This is the question that poet Kathleen Norris asks us as, somewhat to her own surprise, she found herself on two extended residencies at St. John's Abbey in Minnesota. Part record of her time among the Benedictines, part meditation on various aspects of monastic life, The Cloister Walk demonstrates, from the rare perspective of someone who is both an insider and outsider, how immersion in the cloistered world-- its liturgy, its ritual, its sense of community-- can impart meaning to everyday events and deepen our secular lives. In this stirring and lyrical work, the monastery, often considered archaic or otherworldly, becomes immediate, accessible, and relevant to us, no matter what our faith may be.

Book Saints at Heart

Download or read book Saints at Heart written by Bert Ghezzi and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You're no saint!" is a familiar phrase, and one that nearly all of us probably believe accurately reflects our own hearts and lives. We assume that sanctity is reserved for an elite group of people who follow spiritual disciplines so difficult and impractical that no ordinary person could ever perform them. But best-selling author Bert Ghezzi believes every one of us can be holy, and he shows us how in Saints at Heart. By pointing out that all the saints-even the apostles-were sinners, he helps us understand how holiness is not about being perfect, but rather about making a heartfelt decision to fall in love with God and put God first. Each of the 10 saints featured in this book illustrates a specific spiritual practice that can help us draw closer to God. St. Francis models lifelong conversion; Dorothy Day, prayer and the study of Scripture; and Pope John Paul II, evangelization. Every chapter ends with a section titled "Think, Pray, and Act," which contains questions for reflection and application.

  • Author : Karen A. Winstead

Download or read book Virgin Martyrs written by Karen A. Winstead and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the torture and execution of beautiful Christian women first appeared in late antiquity and proliferated during the early Middle Ages. A thousand years later, virgin martyrs were still the most popular female saints. Their legends, in countless retellings through the centuries, preserved a standard plot—the heroine resists a pagan suitor, endures cruelties inflicted by her rejected lover or outraged family, works miracles, and dies for Christ. That sequence was embellished by incidents emblematic of the specific saint: Juliana's battle with the devil, Barbara's immurement in the tower, Katherine's encounter with spiked wheels. Karen A. Winstead examines this seemingly static story form and discovers subtle shifts in the representation of the virgin martyrs, as their legends were adapted for changing audiences in late medieval England.
