Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the president of the nation’s number-one zoo, Sailing with Noah is an intensely personal, behind-the-scenes look at modern zoos. Jeffrey P. Bonner, who was trained as an anthropologist and came to the zoo world quite by accident, shares some of the most compelling stories ever told about contemporary zoos. The stories jump between zoos in different cities and between countries on different continents. Some are fun and funny. Others are sad, even tragic. Pete Hoskins, the director of the Philadelphia Zoo, is in bed, sound asleep, when his phone rings. . . . “There’s been a fire in the World of Primates,” he is told. “You’ve got to get over here.” Whatever he has been dreaming, it is nothing like the nightmare he will find now that he is awake. . . . “They’re all gone. They’re all gone.” All of the animals in the building—the gorillas, the lemurs, the orangutans, and the gibbons—all twenty-three of them are dead. Written in a lively, accessible style, Sailing with Noah explores the role of zoos in today’s society and their future as institutions of education, conservation, and research. Along the way, Bonner relates a variety of true stories about animals and those who care for them (or abuse them), offering his perspective on heavily publicized incidents and describing less-well-known events with compassion and humor in turn. By bringing the stories of the animals’ lives before us, Bonner gives them a voice. He strongly believes that zoos must act for living things, and he argues that conservation is a shared responsibility of all mankind. This book helps us to understand why biodiversity is important and what it means to be a steward of life on earth. From the day-to-day aspects of caring for some of the world’s most exotic creatures to the role of zoos as field conservation organizations, saving wild things in wild places, this book takes the reader on an incredible journey—a journey that begins within the zoo and continues around the globe. Everyone—from zoo visitors to animal lovers to professional conservationists, the young and old alike—will be fascinated by this extraordinary book.

Book excerpt: Following The Highest Tide, Border Songs, and Truth Like the Sun, Jim Lynch now gives us a grand and idiosyncratic family saga that will stand alongside Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion. Joshua Johannssen has spent all of his life surrounded by sailboats. His grandfather designed them, his father built and raced them, his Einstein-obsessed mother knows why and how they work (or not). For Josh and his two siblings, their backyard was the Puget Sound and sailing their DNA. But both his sister and brother fled many years ago: Ruby to Africa and elsewhere to do good works on land, and Bernard to god-knows-where at sea, a fugitive and pirate. Suddenly thirty-one, Josh—who repairs boats of all kinds in a Steinbeckian marina south of Seattle—is pained and confused by whatever the hell went wrong with his volatile family. His parents are barely speaking, his mystified grandfather is drinking harder, and he himself—despite an endless and comic flurry of online dates—hasn’t even come close to finding a girlfriend. But when the Johannssens unexpectedly reunite for the most important race in these waters—all of them together on a classic vessel they made decades ago—they will be carried to destinies both individual and collective, and to a heart-shattering revelation. Past and present merge seamlessly and collide surprisingly as Jim Lynch reveals a family unlike any other, with the grace and humor and magic of a master storyteller.

Book excerpt: The Author, Like Noah, was born in an arid dusty community legally and fasciously called Plentywood Montana. You could see sand dunes forever except they were call wheat fields and there were no camels. As a kid he migrated with his Danish family to Askov, Minnesota - home of the world famous rutabaga that was the life sustaining nourishment of Noah's carnivores during their cruise. In Askov the author learned how to apply birth control measures to rutabagas using a triangular hoe. Sailing experiences began for the author in a camp on Lake Hubert - where he became hooked on sailing. Later the Air Force taught him about nuclear weapons and he quickly discovered the true importance of mathematics. He obtained four degrees from the University of Minnesota, then went about teaching math and other things at several universities; SUNY, Oneonta, Cal State Northridge and Alliant Univ. It was during these student enlightenment years, as he fondly calls them, that he started receiving compelling revelations about first time boater Noah and how to prevent future drowning we must all become nice people and good sailors who enjoy bliss and joy on the water. Viggo and family have and are avid boaters. Their current boat "At Home" is a 32.6 Hunter located in San Diego. His online "Skipper Course" for beginning sailors is available through NauticEd. He is a professor, author of math textbooks and "Bounty Layer People", a book on immigration and education.

Lilly hadn’t been poured. She’d been built, a sturdy woman with healing hands and a connection to the earth. And the only reason Ethan hadn’t recognized that yet was because he’d injured his eyes.
