Or that the average duration of distraction was a staggering 135 seconds? In fact, we'll detail 49 expert tips, tricks, and advice that any driver--new or old--should be aware of before hitting the road. Who I Am, Why Listen To Me My name is Damian Brindle. Book The Safety of Elderly Drivers

Download or read book The Safety of Elderly Drivers written by John Peter Rothe and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the turn of the century, the elderly will comprise about 20 percent of the population in North" America, and 28 percent of those who drive. Place this percentage in high-powered automobiles, and the need for planning and policy development becomes evident. Most standard research on elderly drivers has not gone beyond gathering data on specific situations or characteristics. This book rises beyond simple statistical presentation. It blends sociological insight with statistical detail to produce an absorbing description of the elderly drivers' daily lives, driving styles, experiences with accident and injury, social relationships, and life aspirations. It also describes areas of neglect: imagined and real health problems, driving exposure and traffic violations, accidents, and loss of self-esteem. It presents in-depth accounts of the trauma of loss of license and the importance of the automobile for sustaining mental, physical, and social well-being. The self-imposed or self-defined rules elderly drivers use to navigate traffic or compensate for physical frailities are described in depth. "The Safety of Elderly Drivers "includes penetrating comments from elderly drivers who have been involved in serious accidents, and from random elderly drivers speaking for their generation of drivers. Integrating statistical findings based on Motor Vehicle Department accident data and survey data with comprehensive interviews and discussions with elderly drivers, the book provides an emperically grounded, in-depth view of the elderly driver today. Rothe summarizes theories and models of aging, along with past research on elderly drivers, projecting what the future may hold if present trends in medicine, housing, politics, migration, and mass transit continue. It closes with a series of recommendations for future traffic planning. This book will be of interest to policymakers concerned with traffic safety, as well as social scientists and others interested in gerontological issues. It is the latest in a series on traffic safety sponsored by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in Canada.

Download or read book Driving Challenge written by Phil Berardelli and published by Mountain Lake Press. This book was released on 2011-09-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 20,000 Collisions Waiting to Happen. That's what faces America's driving population each and every day. No wonder. An exploding population of poorly-trained, overconfident, aggressive drivers cram themselves into a barely-growing network of pavement. That's why crashes shut down parts of our metropolitan arteries almost daily. It's why bad weather always brings a spike in the number of incidents. And it's why driving remains the most dangerous thing most of us do in our lives. The Driving Challenge was written to help reduce the odds that you'll be involved in one of those 20,000 daily collisions. It is drawn from Phil Berardelli's years of painstaking observations and research, and from his own experiences as a reformed aggressive driver. Just as in Safe Young Drivers, his acclaimed book for parents and teens, Phil provides sound advice and simple rules that can make a big difference in your safety - starting with the next time you slip behind the wheel. You can be safer and happier on the road. All it requires is a willingness to change - to refuse to accept the status quo on the roads any longer.

Book Young Drivers

Download or read book Young Drivers written by OECD/ECMT Transport Research Centre and published by ECMT. This book was released on 2006-10-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great over-representation of young drivers in crashes and road fatalities is a serious public health problem that exacts an unacceptable toll in human, social and economic terms. Young drivers account for about 27 per cent of driver fatalities across OECD countries, although people in the same age group represent only about 10 per cent of the population. Furthermore, between 20 and 30 per cent of total traffic fatalities result from crashes involving a young driver. Young male drivers' crash fatality rates are as much as three times those of young female drivers, and remain much higher even when adjusted to factor in their higher rates of exposure. In some countries, young males' relative risk, compared to that of other drivers, is increasing. The high levels of young driver risk result principally from factors of inexperience, age, and gender. This risk is aggravated by the circumstances under which many young people drive - young people, especially men, are over-represented in crashes at high speed, at night, with similarly aged passengers, involving alcohol, and often when not wearing seatbelts. There is no single solution. The goal of reduced young driver crashes must be pursued through a combination of countermeasures involving the licensing process, training and learning methods, enforcement, education and communication, and technology.

Book Saving Our Teen Drivers Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways

Download or read book Saving Our Teen Drivers Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways written by John H. Loughry and published by Cunnane Pub. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How parents can teach their young drivers to detect and avoid the 13 most common vulnerabilities killing teenage drivers. Parents of teenage drivers: Can you name the 13 most common vulnerabilities that will catch your teenage driver or teenage passenger off guard and force them into making a split-second life or death decision? Saving Our Teen Drivers is written by a commercial pilot with over 25 years of flying experience and details how professional aviation training on accident avoidance and the decision making process can help younger drivers detect and avoid the 13 most common causes of teenage driving deaths. 80 percent to 90 percent of teenage driving deaths are attributed to driver decision error. For years, several aviation organisations have dedicated millions of dollars to better educate pilots in reducing pilot decision error. This critical knowledge is transferable to drivers of all ages -- and is especially vital to younger and inexperienced drivers. The book is written to empower parents in educating their children, from a pilot's point of view, on how to reduce their odds of having an accident. Any driver between 15 to 19 years old will directly benefit from this knowledge and experience.
