Book City of Clowns

Download or read book City of Clowns written by Daniel Alarcón and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gorgeously rendered graphic novel of Daniel Alarcón’s story City of Clowns. From the author of The King Is Always Above the People, which was longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction. Oscar “Chino” Uribe is a young Peruvian journalist for a local tabloid paper. After the recent death of his philandering father, he must confront the idea of his father’s other family, and how much of his own identity has been shaped by his father’s murky morals. At the same time, he begins to chronicle the life of street clowns, sad characters who populate the violent and corrupt city streets of Lima, and is drawn into their haunting, fantastical world. This remarkably affecting story by Daniel Alarcón was included in his acclaimed first book, War by Candlelight, and now, in collaboration with artist Sheila Alvarado, it takes on a new, thrilling form. This graphic novel, with its short punches of action and images, its stark contrasts between light and dark, truth and fiction, perfectly corresponds to the tone of Chino’s story. With the city of Lima as a character, and the bold visual language from the story, City of Clowns is moving, menacing, and brilliantly vivid.

Book If You Lived Here You d Already be Home

Download or read book If You Lived Here You d Already be Home written by John Jodzio and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “These stories were my kind of stories--a little weird and magical and bittersweet.” --Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author of Bad Feminist and Hunger A middle-aged masochist in love with a comatose man. A gay birthday clown lamenting the loss of his beloved dog. An amateur veterinarian keeping watch over his suicidal daughter. And a bikini model with a barnacle stuck to her butt cheek. These are just a few of the characters who populate the quirky, offbeat world of If You Lived Here You’d Already Be Home a world that feels at once alien and strangely familiar. In these twenty-one brief, funny stories, John Jodzio documents his characters disappointment, frustration, and longing for a home that seems forever out of reach. By turns bleak and hopeful, cruel and tender, this is an exciting literary debut by a writer to watch, a writer with a unique and compelling voice. “John Jodzio is the best kind of modern fiction writer: a thematic traditionalist who feels totally new.” —Chuck Klosterman, New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: EYE LOVE YOU examines the human condition as a series of experiences that we all share, like love, loss, friendship, relationships, children, parents, family, pain, rage, kindness, generosity, attention, dedication, service and hard work. The answer to most questions is love. We just have to be clever enough to figure out the right questions to ask. It is ok to say that we love. We are feeling, thinking, and passionate beings. As the author, Charlie hopes that when you read EYE LOVE YOU, you can access your thoughts, recall deep memories and allow yourself to feel again. Feel the word-pictures that he paints, and remember, dream, feel those of your feelings which may have laid dormant and have not been accessed in a very long time. "Some people go through life without ever feeling a kiss, caress, a warm hug, or the love of another human being." He would like this book to be that warm hug, soft caress, or deep passionate kiss that one longs for while daydreaming. It is ok to laugh, cry and everything in between when you read poetry. It is your journey. Take your time and...enjoy!

Download or read book Clowns to the Rescue written by Jerry Webster and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-06-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We never planned to move into a house next to a family of clowns, but then . . . you never know. I was a special education teacher and we were still renting, awaiting the sale of a house in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t long before we started greeting the unusual neighbors to our right as we left the house. They sat in lawn chairs outside their garage in the morning, to enjoy the early sunlight and greet the neighbors. We learned they were clowns. They were weird: not bad weird, just kind of unexpected weird. Remy had been the first clown in the family. Gwen was married to Remy’s brother, Rene. The two brothers and Gwen grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Remy was a rodeo clown, who would dash out and distract the bucking broncos when their riders were thrown off. It seemed like a good gig, so Gwen and Rene decided to join. Before long, they were invited to audition/interview for Barnum and Bailey, and they became real circus clowns. We heard stories of their adventures, as well as their injuries, from falling from scaffolding, hanging the trapeze in Lyon, France (Rene) to getting run over by the steel ball with the motorcyclist racing around inside. (Gwen.) They grew, I believe, to be happy we befriended them, unlike other neighbors who would walk by, ignoring them. Oh, and by the way, I did get permission from the clowns to use their real names. For me, it was a delightful way to remember them and memorialize those people who live on the outskirts of respectable society, in part because they truly are different.

Developed as content for a class devoted to reading, this collection is not overtly about conventional design, but about a variety of topics viewed through the lens of design. Offered as a primer for undergraduate and graduate students, Design School Reader presents more than forty essays on subjects such as: The role of design in politics Visual culture and the social impact of design Key moments in the history of typography Technological innovations The power of branding and logos Ethical considerations and dilemmas Important figures in the design world Divided into five parts—Design Language; Design Dialects; Politics, Ideology, Design; Business and Commerce; and Inspiration and Discoveries—each section features a collection of essays culled from Heller’s extensive publications from the past several decades. At the end of every essay, readers will find discussion points to prompt further lines of inquiry. As Heller notes, “The key is to read, discuss, and debate.” Students, aficionados, and anyone with a healthy curiosity will thoroughly enjoy this illuminating and thought-provoking assemblage of perspectives on the practice.
