A thought-provoking story told in a different way; a sacrifice that our Lord did not deserve, but He did it out of His loves for us, a sacrifice that neither you nor I deserved. Still, Jesus carried the weight of our sins and gave His life to save us and free us from eternal damnation. Actually, He did it for His infinite and eternal love for all of us (John 3:16). In “Undeserved Sacrifice,” you will find a story that must live in our hearts; be an inspiration by the Holy Spirit, thoroughly learned as the Word of God, in order to put it into practice day after day, and truly, allow Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes questions are asked regarding the value of a detailed study of the sanctuary. Why, when we have the Christ of the New Testament, do we need to go back into the Old? I find no problem in the way of such a study. You have seen the beautiful illustrations in the books that are sold in Christian bookstores. Do you think that the artist painted these from memory? Why no! He used many models. Today these models, living and inanimate, need not sit for long hours before the artist. He simply takes a colored transparencies of the sections of his picture by posing the model for a few minutes. When he is ready to paint, he works these colored segments together, studying each part in detail. It is for a similar reason that God has given us the details of the sanctuary. We should study each part minutely. Only then will we be able to see Christ in His fullness. We can comprehend only one point at a time. Jesus is the Sacrifice. He is also the preist. He is the Shekinah, and He is also the veil. He is every whit! In order to discern the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, the Mediator of mankind, the Saviour of the race, the Redeemer--King, we must synthesize all aspects of the tabernacle. While we may spend time on one part of His ministry, we should keep in mind that He is many-sided. It is only thus that we will come to understand the One Who is altogether lovely, the chiefest among ten thousand, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Book Calvin s Complete Commentary on the Bible

Download or read book Calvin s Complete Commentary on the Bible written by Calvin, John and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 16919 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All 46 of the original volumes are included in this one volume. There are two linked indexes in this volume, a main index at the front of this volume that will take you to the beginning each of the books of the bible and another index at the beginning of each book there is a linked scripture index leading to the particular subject. John Calvin is considered as the first truly great scholar of the Reformation. Indeed, he has even been seen by some to be one of history’s greatest Christian biblical scholars. He had an incredible command of the Bible, and his interpretations were not based on just one or two passages. He combined pastoral insight with solid exegesis to form a strong interpretation of the scriptures. However, some of his views on the prophetic interpretation, such as in the book of Daniel, are controversial. He put forth a purist view and believed that the prophecies in the book of Daniel applied solely to the history between the time of the prophet Daniel (530 BC) and Jesus’ first coming (30 AD). Nevertheless, John Calvin was a force to be reckoned with, and is considered to have a unique insight which enabled him to find the true meaning of the Bible. Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius, after whom the anti-Calvinistic movement Arminianism was named, states that, “Next to the study of the Scriptures which I earnestly inculcate, I exhort my pupils to peruse Calvin’s Commentaries, which I extol in loftier terms than Helmich himself (a Dutch divine, 1551–1608); for I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the library of the fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others, or rather above all other men, what may be called an eminent spirit of prophecy. His Institutes ought to be studied after the (Heidelberg) Catechism, as containing a fuller explanation, but with discrimination, like the writings of all men.” During his life, Calvin produced commentaries on 48 books of the Bible, a total of 45 published volumes. He intended to put out a complete commentary of the Bible, but his death prevented this. The books of Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, 2 & 3 John, and Revelation were unfortunately not completed. He did, however, write a two volume commentary of the Harmony of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) as well as a separate commentary for the gospel of John. Likewise, he also wrote a two volume series on the Harmony of the Law (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). Calvin’s own exegesis of the original text allowed him to bring out a unique and pleasing interpretation. He begins each section of scripture with his own translation of the text and then further expounds upon it, point by point, making it an excellent resource for ministers and teachers alike. After more than 400 years, Calvin’s commentaries are still a relevant and essential tool for Christians.

Book Sacrifice Imagined

Download or read book Sacrifice Imagined written by Douglas Hedley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifice Imagined is an original exploration of the idea of sacrifice by one of the world's preeminent philosophers of religion. Despisers of religion have poured scorn upon the idea of sacrifice as an index of the irrational and wicked in religious practice. Nor does its secularised form seem much more appealing. One need only think of the appalling cult of sacrifice in numerous totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. Yet sacrifice remains a part of our cultural and intellectual 'imaginary'. Hedley proposes good reasons to think that issues of global conflict and the ecological crisis highlight the continuing relevance of the topic of sacrifice for contemporary culture. The subject of sacrifice has been decisively influenced by two books: Girard's The Violence and the Sacred and Burkert's Homo Necans. Both of these are theories of sacrifice as violence. Hedley's book challenges both of these highly influential theories and presents a theory of sacrifice as renunciation of the will. His guiding influences in this are the much misunderstood Joseph de Maistre and the Cambridge Platonists.

Book excerpt: The debut of a major new talent, SAPPHIRE'S GRAVE tells the stories of several generations of African-American women, bringing their spirit and their sorrow to life with a power, sensitivity, and immediacy. In 1749 in Sierra Leone, a woman of fierce dignity is captured and forced onto a slave ship. On the harrowing voyage to the Americas, she is beaten for her unrelenting will and staunch pride. When she arrives, she gives birth to a daughter who is called Sapphire because of the "black-blue-black" complexion she shares with her mother. Sapphire has also inherited her mother's strength and defiant spirit, and despite a life of poverty and opression, she grows up to mother several daughters of her own. Even when tragedy strikes and part of Sapphire dies, her strength gives rise to a legend that will sustain the women who follow her, "each carrying something of her mother, her grandmother, her aunts; each passing on to her own daughters blessing and cursing, the consequences of her own choosing. Through the lives of Sapphire and her descendants, Hilda Gurley-Highgate not only creates a poignant and engrossing saga of black women in America, she brilliantly illuminates the meaning of roots and the links between women and their female ancestors, a tie that often appears tenuous, undefined, and distant, but is strong, palpable, and much closer than we imagine. Written in luminous prose, SAPPHIRE'S GRAVE is an astonishing work by an author poised to take the literary world by storm.
