Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes questions are asked regarding the value of a detailed study of the sanctuary. Why, when we have the Christ of the New Testament, do we need to go back into the Old? I find no problem in the way of such a study. You have seen the beautiful illustrations in the books that are sold in Christian bookstores. Do you think that the artist painted these from memory? Why no! He used many models. Today these models, living and inanimate, need not sit for long hours before the artist. He simply takes a colored transparencies of the sections of his picture by posing the model for a few minutes. When he is ready to paint, he works these colored segments together, studying each part in detail. It is for a similar reason that God has given us the details of the sanctuary. We should study each part minutely. Only then will we be able to see Christ in His fullness. We can comprehend only one point at a time. Jesus is the Sacrifice. He is also the preist. He is the Shekinah, and He is also the veil. He is every whit! In order to discern the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, the Mediator of mankind, the Saviour of the race, the Redeemer--King, we must synthesize all aspects of the tabernacle. While we may spend time on one part of His ministry, we should keep in mind that He is many-sided. It is only thus that we will come to understand the One Who is altogether lovely, the chiefest among ten thousand, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Book Sanctuary and Sacrifice a Reply to Wellhausen

Download or read book Sanctuary and Sacrifice a Reply to Wellhausen written by William Lang Baxter and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. THE MATERIALS OF SACRIFICE AND THEIB ALLEGED EXTRAORDINARY EVOLUTIONS. WE have now exhausted the first of the two great central topics, round which we explained that Wellhausen's peculiar views of sacrifice may be regarded as grouping themselves. That topic has been the General Attitude of the Deity towards Sacrifice, so far as that Attitude can be regarded as disclosed by the (so-called) warring writers of Scripture: and we have discussed it in chapters 3--7. The second topic is the Special Peculiarities and Developments, which Wellhausen attributes to Sacrifice, throughout the long course of Israelitish history. And with this we shall now be occupied, in our remaining chapters. We may say, in general, as regards the second great topic thus presented for discussion, that the sacrificial developments, which he here presents, will perhaps be regarded as neither so astounding, nor so far-reaching, in character, as some of those, which we have just been engaged in discussing. We have found these latter to involve such a practical assertion of Naturalism as the only guide for pre-Exilic Israel, such a practical abstention, on God's part (throughout rolling centuries), from all regulative interest in "the main part of worship," such an extraordinary manipulation of the fundamental watchwords of the early prophets, such a singular, and un-demonstrated, assignment of a sacrificial revolution to Ezekiel, and such a general setting of Moses against prophets, of prophets against themselves, and of redactors against all, that we have felt bound to enlarge on the inquiry, "how can these things be "? and to see if the Old Testament be indeed the tissue of hitherto un-discovered contradiction and deception, which the Prolegomena would...

Book Sanctuary Sovereignty Sacrifice

Download or read book Sanctuary Sovereignty Sacrifice written by Randy Lippert and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on theories of governmentality, Lippert traces the emergence of sanctuary practice to a shift in responsibility for refugees and immigrants from the state to churches and communities. Here sanctuary practices and spaces are shaped by a form of pastoral power that targets needs and operates through sacrifice, and by a sovereign power that is exceptional, territorial, and spectacular. Correspondingly, law plays a complex role in sanctuary, appearing variously as a form of oppression, a game, and a source of majestic authority that overshadows the state. A thorough and original account of contemporary sanctuary practice, this book tackles theoretical and methodological questions in governmentality and socio-legal studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanctuary and Sacrifice: A Reply to Wellhausen It is to be regretted that these terms have almost got fixed into a very narrow and unwarranted usage. If the settling of the mere text of Scripture be the lower criticism, then the due weighing of the various considerations, that go to settle its age and significance, constitutes the higher criticism. In this, the original, and warrantable, aspect of the terms. Such a work as Paley's Home Paulinae may possibly be prized, as a valuable product of higher criticism, long after Well hausen's Prolegomena has ceased to be read. It is a method, or a sphere, of investigation, and not a special set of results, that the term higher criticism properly denotes. Our volume does not aim at anything so absurd as tilting against a true science, or criticism: its aim is to show that almost every page of the Prolegomena is an utter mis-use, and an utter turning to folly, of legitimate princi ples of higher criticism. But, in view of current usage, and if we were to write to be understood, it was almost a necessity to employ Higher Critics to denote the recent sect of monopolists, Or of critical Pharisees. Their more proper designa tion would be Imaginationist Critics' They are higher than others, solely through building their critical castles in the air, instead of on terra firma. Book A Theory of Primitive Christian Religion

Download or read book A Theory of Primitive Christian Religion written by Gerd Theissen and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of 'primitive' Christianity - Christianity in its original form, this work was first given as Speaker's Lectures in Oxford. Covering the first five centuries of Christianity, it argues that neither a theology of the New Testament nor a history of the early Church can do justice to all the dimensions of the earliest Christianity. It explores in depth the formation of primitive Christianity and studies the effect of the two great crises of primitive Christianity: the split with Judaism and the threat from Gnosticism. It is aimed at academic theologians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scarlet thread runs throughout the Bible. It is the concept of redemptive blood. Jesus’ beautiful and terrible death on the cross is central to the story of that scarlet thread, but there is more to the story. To understand the scarlet thread fully, we must look at the sanctuary: the holy ground that offers a glimpse of God’s character and His plan of redemption. Mysterious and often misunderstood, the sanctuary is at the very heart of biblical theology. Where God and I Meet will help you achieve greater understanding of the heavenly sanctuary, the Israelite sanctuary, the pre-Advent judgment, and Christ’s sacrifice and high-priestly ministry. You’ll come to grasp how the sanctuary interconnects with salvation, prophecy, and mission. But most important, you will see how the precious scarlet thread weaves a message of hope and redemption throughout every page of the Bible.

Download or read book Sacrifice in the Bible written by Roger T. Beckwith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-04-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the theme of sacrifice is seen by many as peripheral, not to say superfluous, to the theological task. The papers in this volume, however, given by members of the Biblical Theology study group of Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical and Theological Research, bear witness to the centrality of the idea and practice of sacrifice in biblical religion. Contributions cover the whole spectrum of the biblical treatment of the subject, as well as survey its contemporary cultural and religious contexts, whether Babylonian and Canaanite or Graeco-Roman and Jewish. The underlying goal of 'Sacrifice in the Bible' is to ascertain how far the developed idea of sacrifice, both as the pattern of human life and as the way of divine salvation in Christ, is implicit in the ceremonial practice from which it arose.

Book Levitical Sacrifice and Heavenly Cult in Hebrews

Download or read book Levitical Sacrifice and Heavenly Cult in Hebrews written by Benjamin J. Ribbens and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines Hebrews’ understanding of the relationship between old covenant sacrifices and Christ’s new covenant sacrifice, especially as it relates to the question of efficacy. Most scholars think the author of Hebrews strips the levitical sacrifices of most, if not all, efficacy, but this work affirms a more positive depiction of the levitical sacrifices. A mystical apocalyptic tradition stands behind Hebrews’ description of the heavenly cult , which establishes the framework for relating the levitical sacrifice to Christ’s sacrifice. The earthly, levitical cult was efficacious when it corresponded to or synchronized with the heavenly sacrifice of Christ. Still, the author of Hebrews develops the notion of the heavenly cult in unique ways, as Christ’s sacrifice both validates the earthly practice but also, due to his new covenant theology, calls for its end. Ribbens’ bold proposal joins a growing number of scholars that place Hebrews in the mystical apocalyptic tradition, highlights positive statements in Hebrews related to the efficacy of levitical sacrifices that are often overlooked, and relies on the heavenly cult to reconcile the positive and negative descriptions of the levitical cult.
