Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 19 September 1960 - the very first day of classes at Laurentian University - the Sudbury Star editorialized about what it called "the greatest experiment ever undertaken in Canadian higher education." Given the new university's bilingual and tri-cultural mandate, and religious complexities, the Star predicted there would inevitably be tensions and setbacks but that with cooperation, goodwill, and understanding, there would also be major accomplishments. This study, by five Laurentian members of faculty - four historians and one sociologist - explores the many ways in which this prognostication proved accurate, on both scores, over the next half-century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Academic Sabbatical: A Voyage of Discovery is a collection of narratives that reveals how important sabbaticals are to faculty and, by extension, to higher education. This in-depth look at the diverse experiences and perspectives provides a wealth of evidence that sabbaticals are instrumental in increasing productivity in terms of research and knowledge dissemination. These periods of self-directed and focused work enable scholars to restore their academic energies, leading to enhanced engagement with their programs, graduate students, and intellectual exchange among peers. Although not without challenges and tensions, sabbaticals help academics build stronger and deeper connections. While this book stands alone in promoting the richness and potential of the sabbatical as a structural feature of the academy, it is a great follow-up to The Academic Gateway and Beyond the Academic Gateway, which respectively discuss the tenure-track and tenure experience. This book is the third in the Lives in the Canadian Academic Landscape triptych.

Book A History of Higher Education in Canada 1663 1960

Download or read book A History of Higher Education in Canada 1663 1960 written by Robin S. Harris and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1976-12-15 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of higher education in Canada, through a detailed description and analysis of what was being taught and of the research opportunities available to professors in the years from 1860 to 1960. Background is provided in the opening chapters of Part I, which outline the origins of post-secondary education in both French and English Canada from 1635 to 1860, and in the parallel chapters of Parts II to V which describe the establishment of new and the growth of existing institutions during the period 1861-90, 1891-1920, 1921-40, and 1941-60. The remaining chapters of each of the book's main divisions present an examination of the curricula in arts and science, professional education, and graduate studies in 1860, 1890, 1920, 1940, and 1960, as well as the conditions pertaining to scholarship and research in these years. The concluding chapter identifies the characteristics which differentiate Canadian higher education from that of other countries. The book includes a full bibliography, an extensive index, and statistical appendices providing data on enrolment and degrees granted. A History of Higher Education in Canada 1663-1960 will be the definitive work in its field, valuable both for the wealth of information and the historical insights it contains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the twenty-first century we are acutely conscious that universities operate within an entangled world of international scholarly connection. Now available in paperback, Empire of scholars examines the networks that linked academics across the colonial world in the age of ‘Victorian’ globalization. Stretching across the globe, these networks helped map the boundaries of an expansive but exclusionary ‘British academic world’ that extended beyond the borders of the British Isles. Drawing on extensive archival research conducted in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, this book remaps the intellectual geographies of Britain and its empire. In doing so, it provides a new context for writing the history of ideas and offers a critical analysis of the connections that helped fashion the global world of universities today.
