Book excerpt: Rye, now a suburb of New York City, has a fascinating history dating from its founding in 1660. Due to its extensive waterfront on Long Island Sound, Rye has been home to several major amusement parks, as well as beaches and nearly a dozen clubs. These clubs have featured sailing, golf, and swimming, and numerous postcard scenes in Rye show the ways in which residents entertained themselves over the years. Rye also contains plentiful views of the churches and schools in town, which date back well into the 19th century. The town has had a number of famous private schools and institutions, including St. Benedict's Home for Colored Children and the Osborn. Scenes also show civic buildings, such as the fire stations, post offices, train stations, and the mansions of the wealthy.

Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views of Rye: Arms of the Ancient Town of Rye, England The Reverend Charles W. Baird, former Pastor of the Rye Presbyterian Church, prepared an interesting discourse on the two hundredth anniversary of the organization of the Town of Rye. This discourse was so much appreciated by his parishioners that they persuaded him to write a most inter esting volume on the history of Rye from 1660 to 1870. It is to this book that I am indebted for the several early incidents of Rye. It is difficult to think of our present Rye as one vast forest, and that everywhere extending up into the trees were once towering grapevines, which bore wild grapes which the Dutch pronounced almost as good as those in the vineyards abroad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Developing Mission, Joseph W. Ho offers a transnational cultural history of US and Chinese communities framed by missionary lenses through time and space—tracing the lives and afterlives of images, cameras, and visual imaginations from before the Second Sino-Japanese War through the first years of the People's Republic of China. When American Protestant and Catholic missionaries entered interwar China, they did so with cameras in hand. Missions principally aimed at the conversion of souls and the modernization of East Asia, became, by virtue of the still and moving images recorded, quasi-anthropological ventures that shaped popular understandings of and formal foreign policy toward China. Portable photographic technologies changed the very nature of missionary experience, while images that missionaries circulated between China and the United States affected cross-cultural encounters in times of peace and war. Ho illuminates the centrality of visual practices in the American missionary enterprise in modern China, even as intersecting modernities and changing Sino-US relations radically transformed lives behind and in front of those lenses. In doing so, Developing Mission reconstructs the almost-lost histories of transnational image makers, subjects, and viewers across twentieth-century China and the United States.
