Book Summers at Cedar Grove

Download or read book Summers at Cedar Grove written by Ben Timson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Missouri Ozarks are blessed with many clear, spring-fed streams. One of the most scenic is the Current River. High up on the river, a low-water bridge serves as a popular put-in location for several thousand canoe and kayak floaters each year. The site is known as Cedar Grove. Many floaters arriving at the bridge have no idea of the origin of the put-in location's name. Summers at Cedar Grove is the story of the once thriving village that existed at the bridge told through the eyes of the author, who spent many summer days during his childhood at the family farm near the village. First known as Riverside, the village was formed in 1875 and was populated primarily by Scots-Irish migrants from Appalachia. During the timber boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Riverside rose to prominence and became known as Cedar Grove. The timber was stripped from the land over four decades, and the village eventually faded from existence. Through a combination of historical data and stories relayed from individuals who lived in the community, the reader will learn about the mill, stores, one-room school, health care in the village, and the people that supported it during its rise and fall.

Book Louis Johnson and the Arming of America

Download or read book Louis Johnson and the Arming of America written by Keith D. McFarland and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-04 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Without question this is an important new addition to World War II and Cold War historiography.... Highly recommended." -- Douglas Brinkley, author of Dean Acheson: The Cold War Years and The Unfinished Presidency: Jimmy Carter's Journey beyond the White House "A remarkably objective, yet sympathetic, study of Louis Johnson's life and career. Now only half-remembered,... Johnson was a major national figure. Colorful, aggressive, independent-minded, egotistical, his strong views and conflicts with Dean Acheson proved to be his undoing. All in all, a fascinating tale." -- James R. Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense "McFarland and Roll have performed a real service in rescuing from obscurity this Democratic mover and shaker. Their account of the rise and fall of Louis Johnson provides us with the fullest depiction yet of an important Washington figure employed for better or worse as a blunt instrument of policy change by both Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman." -- Alonzo L. Hamby, author of Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman and For the Survival of Democracy: Franklin Roosevelt and the World Crisis of the 1930s "[Johnson's] career is a cautionary tale of how even the most ruthlessly effective men can become pawns in the Washington power game. McFarland and Roll bring Johnson to life in this thorough and well-told history." -- Evan Thomas, Newsweek, author of Robert Kennedy: His Life and The Very Best Men: The Early Years of the CIA Louis Johnson was FDR's Assistant Secretary of War and the architect of the industrial mobilization plans that put the nation on a war footing prior to its entry into World War II. Later, as Truman's Secretary of Defense, Johnson was given the difficult job of unifying the armed forces and carrying out Truman's orders to dramatically reduce defense expenditures. In both administrations, he was asked to confront and carry out extremely unpopular initiatives -- massive undertakings that each president believed were vital to the nation's security and economic welfare. Johnson's conflicts with Henry Morganthau, Secretary of War Harry H. Woodring, Winston Churchill, Harry Hopkins, Dean Acheson, Averell Harriman, and Paul Nitze find contemporary parallels in the recent disagreements between the national defense establishment and the State Department.

Book African American Middle Income Parents

Download or read book African American Middle Income Parents written by Ethel Swindell Robinson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ethel Robinson has written an amazing book. As she wisely argues, despite a rapidly growing middle and upper class, popular media and public debates continue to view African-American families from a deficit perspective. Portrayals of African-American families in newspapers, television, and contemporary scholarship tend to focus on single-parent households, low parental expectations, and lack of family involvement in schooling. The families you will meet in this book contradict these stereotypes. In carefully crafted vignettes, Dr. Robinson paints an alternative portrait of life in African-American households. In this marvelous book, you will see eight intact families intimately involved in the academic and social lives of their children. Some volunteer in their children’s classrooms; others serve as devoted tutors and mentors; still others are active advocates, arguing passionately for school services; all hold fast to the hope that their children will achieve their piece of the American dream. This book is a powerful antidote to the negative portrayals of African-American families that abound in mainstream media. It is a 'must-read' for researchers, educators, and all who wish to look beyond and beneath the stereotypes of African-American family life." ~ Susan Hynds, Ph.D., Professor of English Education, Syracuse University Reading and Language Arts Center
