Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rusty Rails in Paradise" is about the California Southern Railroad, its operational highs and lows, from its rocky start through its inglorius demise, and its several rebirths after a takeover and changes by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. It's about the visionaries, the rail barons and their influence on railroad growth in the western United States, and it's about the railroad's effect on the areas where it traveled. Finally, it's about some of what remains today of the California Southern's rusty rails. We are not trying to attempt a history re-write or present a litany of historic facts but we do want to preserve the history of the California Southern Railroad, and all the persons, situations, growth and failures of those involved in its founding, construction, operation and the few remnants of what remain today, all of which had a great effect on the cities and towns we live in today.

Book The Search for Paradise Lost

Download or read book The Search for Paradise Lost written by Elizabeth Ann Smith and published by Strategic Book Publishing Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Search for Paradise Lost is a collection of uplifting and amusing reminiscences of Liz's travels with her husband, Alan, in Central Africa, searching for an unconventional rural environment to raise her family. In spite of many setbacks caused by the unsettled political situations, her exciting journey proves to be one of self-discovery, opening new worlds beyond her limited expectations, and leading to unusual friendships. The journey starts in 1960 in the earthy African town Zomba, Nyasaland. There, Liz discovers Paradise and revels in its untamed natural magnificence. She learns to deal with many challenges, including coping with the colonial lifestyle, nasty insects, unhygienic conditions, and encounters with leopards and witch doctor curses. Unfortunately, the magic waned with the new African independence. On returning to Rhodesia, an en-route terrorist ambush didn't dampen their enthusiasm, but taught them to cope with the ensuing war years in an isolated school in Somabula. There they adapted to pastoral life and formed friendships with locals, who were greatly amused by their lack of farming knowledge and unconventional teaching methods. Holidays were spent exploring the mystical Matopos and enjoying halcyon weeks camping in ancient Sofala in Mozambique. The tranquil palm-studded golden beaches, Portuguese wine, and abundant seafood made the perfect playground for the family. Once again, political changes forced them to leave their beloved paradise, but they carried with them heartwarming lessons and memories of a lost, unsophisticated era that can never be repeated.

It is as much a story of perseverance, passion, and belief as it is about the people and remarkable landscapes of Siberia and Mongolia. Tim and Chris are not just fearless adventurers but philosophers on wheels, willing and able to open themselves up to everything from the voice of the Steppes to the Russian villagers and the nomads of the Gobi desert. From this they draw an often funny, moving and inspirational tale of living out a dream. Mixed into this journey is the story of their tumultuous relationship as two opposing wills battle it out in the midst of heat, snow and hunger.

Book excerpt: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DAVE BRANDSTETTER A cult leader named Azrael perpetrates a brutal mass murder and afterwards a slimy lawyer is trying to claim the life insurance policy for his missing daughter; it's the early '80s in Los Angeles and private investigator Dave Brandstetter has a new love in his life as exciting as this case is dreadful. Two years ago Charles Westover disgraced himself and his family when he was disbarred for bribery. Westover’s daughter Serenity, disgusted with her once beloved father, ran away to a cult founded by a mesmerizingly handsome young man, a self-appointed messiah going by the grimly grandiose name of Azrael. The whereabouts of Serenity pass unknown for years until the police raid Azrael’s compound and discover that the cult leader lived up to his ghastly “Angel of Death” moniker. Thinking his daughter has been murdered, Charles Westover claims her life insurance, and then he too vanishes. Insurance companies don’t like to cut a check without a body and especially don’t like cutting a check to someone who is also missing. Hired as a private investigator for Banner Insurance, David Brandstetter quickly finds himself in a complicated maze of lies and hidden histories. And Dave suspects that, just like in the labyrinths of old, there will be a monster at the end of it. It's not all bad times and extreme hazard for our man Dave. A passionate romance has entered his life with the reappearance of Cecil Harris, a handsome young African American investigative reporter for the local news station looking to get to the bottom of a different kind of story.
