Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the best efforts of a number of historians, many aspects of the ferocious struggle between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War remain obscure or shrouded in myth. One of the most persistent of these is the notion - largely created by many former members of its own officer corps in the immediate postwar period - that the German Army was a paragon of military professionalism and operational proficiency whose defeat on the Eastern Front was solely attributable to the amateurish meddling of a crazed former Corporal and the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Red Army. A key pillar upon which the argument of German numerical-weakness vis-à-vis the Red Army has been constructed is the assertion that Germany was simply incapable of providing its army with the necessary quantities of men and equipment needed to replace its losses. In consequence, as their losses outstripped the availability of replacements, German field formations became progressively weaker until they were incapable of securing their objectives or, eventually, of holding back the swelling might of the Red Army. This work seeks to address the notion of German numerical-weakness in terms of Germany's ability to replace its losses and regenerate its military strength, and assess just how accurate this argument was during the crucial first half of the Russo-German War (June 1941-June 1943). Employing a host of primary documents and secondary literature, it traces the development and many challenges of the German Army from the prewar period until the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. It continues on to chart the first two years of the struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union, with a particular emphasis upon the scale of German personnel and equipment losses, and how well these were replaced. It also includes extensive examinations into the host of mitigating factors that both dictated the course of Germany's campaign in the East and its replacement and regeneration capabilities. In contrast to most accounts of the conflict, this study finds that numerical-weakness being the primary factor in the defeat of the Ostheer - specifically as it relates to the strength and condition of the German units involved - has been overemphasized and frequently exaggerated. In fact, Germany was actually able to regenerate its forces to a remarkable degree with a steady flow of fresh men and equipment, and German field divisions on the Eastern Front were usually far stronger than the accepted narratives of the war would have one believe.

Book The Soviet Union and the Origins of the Second World War

Download or read book The Soviet Union and the Origins of the Second World War written by Geoffrey C. Roberts and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-08-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have heatedly debated the Soviet role in the origins of the Second World War for more than 50 years. At the centre of these controversies stands the question of Soviet relations with Nazi Germany and the Stalin-Hitler pact of 1939. Drawing on a wealth of new material from the Soviet Archives, this detailed and original study analyses Moscow's response to the rise of Hitler, explains the origins of the Nazi-Soviet pact, and charts the road to Operation Barbarossa and the disaster of the surprise German attack on the USSR in June 1941.

Download or read book Ostkrieg written by Stephen G. Fritz and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 22, 1941, Germany launched the greatest land assault in history on the Soviet Union, an attack that Adolf Hitler deemed crucial to ensure German economic and political survival. As the key theater of the war for the Germans, the eastern front consumed enormous levels of resources and accounted for 75 percent of all German casualties. Despite the significance of this campaign to Germany and to the war as a whole, few English-language publications of the last thirty-five years have addressed these pivotal events. In Ostkrieg: Hitler's War of Extermination in the East, Stephen G. Fritz bridges the gap in scholarship by incorporating historical research from the last several decades into an accessible, comprehensive, and coherent narrative. His analysis of the Russo-German War from a German perspective covers all aspects of the eastern front, demonstrating the interrelation of military events, economic policy, resource exploitation, and racial policy that first motivated the invasion. This in-depth account challenges accepted notions about World War II and promotes greater understanding of a topic that has been neglected by historians.

Book The German Russian War 1941 1945

Download or read book The German Russian War 1941 1945 written by Augustin Guillaume and published by Naval & Military Press. This book was released on 1956 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interestingly this title, produced by the British War Office in 1956, was written by General Guillaume of the French Army. Nevertheless it is a first class overview of the whole of Operation Barbarossa, and is more than amply illustrated by a collection of 63 sketch maps detailing important battles and movements throughout the campaign. Planning is dealt with only briefly, and the book really gets going with a description of the Battle for Moscow in the winter of 1941/42. It then looks at the defence of Leningrad before racing forward to the Battle of Stalingrad. Details are then given of the fighting in the Caucasus. It is a treatment of the most important factors in the campaign from a military viewpoint, and there is no padding in this book at all. Part Two deals with the situation in the spring of 1943 and looks then in detail at the Battle of Kursk. Following the German failure there, the Russians advanced on Orel and Kharkov, sealing the strategic fate of Germany in the war. 1944 and the German withdrawal is treated by means of descriptions of Ten battles of destruction ending in late 1944. Finally the author analyses the German collapse in 1945. Throughout there are commentaries and analyses which help the reader to an understanding of not just what went on, but why things went so wrong for the Germans. This is an important text for the student of this enormous campaign, and cannot be ignored.
