Book The Russian People Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Russian People Classic Reprint written by Maurice Baring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian People Hen the average man, in search of information on a subject which he knows little or nothing at, has recourse to the best-known authorities, his enthu siasm will often be damped by finding that the authors have taken for granted a certain foundation of elementary knowledge on his part, which he lacks. He finds himself at sea; he is met at every turn by allusions to things which he is supposed to know, and which he is ignorant of. The authors he has consulted have not thought it worth while to repeat what they suppose any one interested in the subject is bound to know. Thus the student sometimes finds himself in the position of a foreigner to whom an Englishman talks of the game of cricket under the impression that he is talking to a fellow Englishman. Hopelessly puzzled, he will abandon his study of this particular subject and turn his attention to other things. This is especially true with regard to the study of Russian affairs. The authorities as a rule know so much more than the people who are likely to consult them that the student is confused and baffled. If he reads books dealing with Russian commerce, politics administration, or literature, he will often find that a certain minimum knowledge of Russian history is taken for granted. Now, it is just this knowledge that he lacks. If, on the other hand, he takes up a volume of Russian history, he will often come across allusions to Russian life and literature which mean nothing to him. I am far from blaming writers of such books for not supplying the lack. A man who writes a book for the serious students of a subject, say the game of cricket, must necessarily assume that the student will be already aware that the game is played with a. Book With the Die Hards in Siberia Classic Reprint

Download or read book With the Die Hards in Siberia Classic Reprint written by Colonel John Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Die-Hards in Siberia Originally written for the private use of my sons in case I did not return, this narrative of events. Connected with the expedition to Siberia must of necessity lack many of the necessary ele ments which go to make a history. I wrote of things as they occurred, and recorded the reasons and motives which prompted the participants. Many things have happened since which seem to show that we were not always right in our esti mate of the forces at work around us. Things are not always what they seem, and this is probably more evident in the domain of Russian affairs than in any other. It would be comparatively easy to alter the text, and square it with the results, but that would destroy the main value of the story. The Statesman and the Soldier rarely write his tory. It is their misfortune to make it. It is quite easy to be a prophet when you know the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book My Disillusionment in Russia

Download or read book My Disillusionment in Russia written by Emma Goldman and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-01-05T03:31:26Z with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Mission to Russia and Other Diplomatic Memories, Vol. 2 Meanwhile tlie Emperor at the beginning of February had parted with Goremykin and appointed Stiirmer President of the Council. Stiirmer's grand father had been Austrian Commissary at St. Helena during Napoleon's residence on that island, and he had himself successively held the posts Of Director of the Ceremonies at the Russian Court and of Governor of Jaroslav. With but a second-rate intelligence, without any experience of affairs, a sycophant, bent solely on the advancement of his own interests and extremely ambitious, he owed his new appointment to the fact that he was a friend of Rasputin and that he was backed by the Empress's camarilla. I shall have more to say about him later on, but I may mention, as showing the sort Of man that he was, that he chose as his chef de cabinet a former agent of the okhmna (secret police), Manouiloff by name, who was a few months afterwards arrested and tried for blackmailing a bank. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Russian Diary, 1917-1920 When the revolution broke out in Russia I was living in a provincial town, which since the war had become of considerable importance. For some time before February 1917 the news papers had been daily scanned with ever-increasing anxiety. Not only did it daily become more evident that there was much treachery and treason, but it seemed that the only one who could have put a stop to this state of affairs lacked either the wisdom or the courage, or both. Each time that the name of a newly appointed minister was read out people looked at each other in amazement, and then came the never-varying exclama tion, What are they aiming at A revolution? Even before the date I speak of thoughtful Russians had foreseen a revolution from below, but they hoped it would be staved off until the close of the war. The revolution which they now spoke of was one which they thought might prove merely a palace revolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Storm-Cloud: Or, Russia in Her Relations to Neighbouring Countries IN this volume, which I have the honour to present to the indulgence of English readers, I deal with the two contending principles of modern Russia - Liberty and Despotismw - from one parti cular point of View, viz., the influence both are likely to exercise upon neighbouring European countries and their general welfare and progress. The entire work is entitled The Russian storm-cloud, under which title the first four chapters appeared in Time. Ever since the creation of the Russian Empire by Peter the Great, Europe has felt uneasy, and still feels apprehensive at the vicinity of a colossal State obedient to the despotic will of one man and the continual extension of the empire in all directions. On the other hand, Russian revo lution, owing to the extremely violent character of the means adopted, appeared, and still appears, to many minds as _a threatening phantom of general destruction and of the overthrow of all social order, scarcely less dangerous to the peace of Europe than to the despotism of the Tzar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Self-Discovery of Russia HE following pages deal 'with some aspects of the self-discovery of Russia, as these were visible in the summer of 1915. Part of the second section of Theme III has appeared in The Contemporary Review, and Theme IV is substantially as it was published in The Hibbert Journal. Any suggestion of dogmatism in the passages relating to foreign affairs is simply due to the fact that they are based upon conversations with two or three of the highest Russian authorities on that subject. Where many are concerned who have aided me in various particulars it is difficult to make detailed acknowledg ment, but I cannot refrain from expressing my gratitude to a friend through many years, Mr. A. N. Koulomzine, President of the Council of the Empire, without whose interest some of the following experiences would not have been possible. At the same time he is not respon sible for any of the opinions stated in the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and the Great War The success obtained with the British public by my work on Modern Russia, of which the second edition followed the first in the space of ten months, has inspired me with courage once more to address my readers in a book devoted to my country. The subject of this new book is Russia and the Great War. But in writing it I wished not merely to write a book for the moment ex elusively, of value only for today, and of no interest to-morrow. It is net the external and dramatic aspect of the great war waged by Russia and her Allies that interests me the most. On the contrary, my readers will find in my pages neither descriptions of battles nor tragic or picturesque narratives of the incidents of battle. My aim has been something quite different from this. I wish to inform my English readers con cerning the principal phenomena of Russian life before the War, and to explain the relations be tween these phenomena and the war itself. Book Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives Classic Reprint written by Frank A. Golder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives Permission to Use the Archives. A foreigner desiring to use the Official archives must secure authorization from the Russian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs through the representative Of his country residing in Petrograd. Each application is considered on its own merits, and although permission is usually granted to persons Of approved scholarship, it should not be assumed as a matter Of course. It may take some time before the application is acted upon and it would therefore be unwise to set out for Russia until there is definite assurance that access to the archives will be given. This permission is only for the Archive Of the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs at Petrograd. If, in addition, the scholar wishes to examine material on his subject found in other places the director of the above mentioned archive will arrange this. TO help the authorities in Russia, the applicant should state clearly and definitely the subject and period he wishes to investigate, the object in view, and when he plans to arrive. The application should be accompanied by credentials from men and institutions Of learning as to the character and standing Of the applicant. Facilities for Study. When the scholar has arrived on the field he will find the archivists very willing to co-operate with him. On the whole there is little red tape. Unfortunately the physical facilities are not everywhere adequate. The primary purpose Of the government archives is to preserve the documents for Official use. Scientific investigation is a secondary matter, especially so far as foreigners are concerned, for not many Of them come. It is therefore not surprising that no special arrangements are provided. In some cases there is no room for an extra table, and only by crowding is an additional place made. Time. The greatest drawback, however, is not the want of Space, for the Officers of the archive will Often inconvenience themselves to accommodate the stranger, but the lack Of time. Church and civil holidays follow each other in rapid succession, and make many days unavailable. Moreover, the archives are Open only for a few hours each day, never more than five, usually from 11 a. M. To 4 p. M., and sometimes only two, I p. M. To 3 p. M. This is the winter schedule. In summer it is worse, for then the Officers go away on their vacations and the hours Of work are reduced. The result is a peculiar situation: in the winter time the hours are longer, but there is little daylight; in summer the hours are short, though daylight lasts long. Were it not for the numerous holidays during the spring months that season would be the best for investigation.
