Book Russia and Reform Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia and Reform Classic Reprint written by Bernard Pares and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Reform It is quite impossible for any one man to make an adequate study of all the chief aspects of Russian life. It has rather been my object to suggest to future students some of the many important and fascinating questions which demand special study. The history, the literature, the geography, the economy, of Russia might each absorb the interest of a number of genuine students. Russia has for a long time been almost the chief factor of our foreign policy; her Imperial importance challenges our attention; her industrial future cannot be a matter of indifference to us. The difficulties of a political study of Russia are very great. The abnormal bias of the Government against all publicity has long made it very difficult for Russian writers to deal adequately and objectively even with some of the most innocent statistics. There also exists amongst the educated class a spirit of antagonism to the Government which often diminishes the value, not only of such publications as may have evaded the censorship, but even of the most simple statement of fact made in private conversation. I have therefore found it necessary to sometimes confine myself to that which I could see for myself or learn at first hand from those persons who were best qualified to inform me on a given point, checking their statements by what I was able to gather from others. This, of course, meant that I had to select certain typical districts for investigation. The answers to my questions were recorded as soon as possible after I received them. I also had many talks with the chief leaders of the different political parties, and it may be assumed that, in the latter part of the book, I am often summarising the statements made to me by the persons chie y concerned. For the accuracy of my reports. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' History of Russia In a book for young people a long list of authorities may be spared; it is sufficient to state that the facts have been drawn from the best sources, - Russian, German, French, and English. In the first part Russian names have been done away with English equivalents take their places. A table follows for convenience. In all cases difficult words are avoided so far as possible, and it is hoped that this Young Folks' History of Russia is at least readable. Book Free Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Free Russia Classic Reprint written by William Hepworth Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia Svobodnaya Rossia - Free Russia-is a word on every lip in that great country; at once the Name and Hope of the new empire born of the Crimean war. In past times Russia was free, even as Germany and France were free. She fell before Asiatic hordes; and the Tartar system lasted, in spirit, if not in form, until the war; but since that conflict ended, the old Russia has been born again. This new country - hoping to be pacific, meaning to be Free - is what I have tried to paint. My journeys, just completed, carried me from the Polar Sea to the Ural Mountains, from the mouth of the Vistula to the Straits of Yeni Kale, including visits to the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. My object being to paint the Living People, I have much to say about pilgrims, monks, and parish priests; about village justice, and patriarchal life; about beggars, tramps, and sectaries; about Kozaks, Kalmuks, and Kirghiz; about workmen's artels, burgher rights, and the division of land; about students' revolts and soldiers' grievances; in short, about the Human Forces which underlie and shape the external politics of our time. Two journeys made in previous years have helped me to judge the reforms which are opening out the Japan-like empire of Nicolas into the Free Russia of the reigning prince. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life: In Town and Country Russian life, the only phase of the national existence that the ordinary visitor ever sees, whether on business or pleasure bent, is the outgrt of the reforms instituted by Peter the Great, and copied from much that we are familiar with in Western Europe. The modern development of Russia has, it is true, grown with wonderful rapidity of late years, but it is almost entirely confined to the towns and the regions easily accessible by the railway. New railways are constantly being laid down, but Russia covers so vast an area that a glance at the map will sufi'ice to show how large a pro portion of the country must remain for many years outside their influence. Less than twelve per cent. Of the nation reside in towns, not eight per cent. Near enough to urban centres to be influenced by town life, while the remaining eighty per cent., people of every rank of life from nobles to peasants, dwell in regions that modern life and thought have as yet hardly touched to any appreciable extent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Revolution The Russian Revolution has interested the whole world in Russia and the Russian people. The peoples of the West are uneasy about the Communist experiment, accompanied as it is by a forced implanting of atheism such as the world has never yet known - an experiment carried on in a vast country which is little known to, and little understood by, the West. What must be of great interest is the psycholo gical problem How was it possible for Holy Russia to be turned into an arsenal of militant atheism? How is it that a people who are religious by their very structure and live exclu sively by faith have proved to be such a fruitful field for anti-religious propaganda To explain that, to understand Russian anti-religious psy chology, one must have an insight into the religious psychology of the Russian people. Book Russia Under Nicholas II Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia Under Nicholas II Classic Reprint written by Arthur Reade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia Under Nicholas II Meanwhile, however, Western ideas of progress had been making vigorous headway among educated people and found increasing expression in literature. Turgeniev directed the attention of Russian society to peasant life and revealed to the satin-clad beauties of Russian society that the moujik could experience the emotions of love and hate as keenly as those who lived in the world of wealth and fashion. Much talent that would otherwise have found its best scope in politics was de ected, for reasons of personal security, into literature and journalism, but the books so produced were tinged with the new spirit. In the security of exile Herzen and others were preaching the gospels of socialism or communism, and their teaching had a consider able effect on Russian thought. During the lifetime of Nicholas I. These tendencies were kept in check, but with the shock of the Crimean War and the accession of Alexander II., they came to the surface and for a while dominated Russian policy. They produced two epoch-making reforms, the abolition of serfdom and the foundation of the Zemstvo. This is not the place in which to speak of the promise with which the reign of Alexander II. Opened, the great achievements of its early years, the disillusion, the gloom and the anarchy in which it closed. West European ideas had been applied too crudely to Russia, too spasmodically perhaps to give them a fair chance, and the country, like the Emperor, was in two minds and required pulling together again at all costs. This task was achieved by Alexander III., who combated the doctrinaire philosophy of the extreme revolutionaries by raising against them the philosophy of Russian nationalism and emphasising the points of difference between Russia and Western Europe. Book War and Revolution in Russia 1914 1917 Classic Reprint

Download or read book War and Revolution in Russia 1914 1917 Classic Reprint written by Basil Gourko and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Politics This book attempts to put the English reader in a position to understand the conditions of life and the problems of government that exist in the Russia of to day. Some knowledge of the aspects of the country, the ethnological descent of its inhabitants, and the story of the rise and maintenance of their autocratic form of government, seems necessary as a preliminary to such understanding, and the first three chapters of the volume are devoted to an exposition of these matters; but since modern political life is the subject of the book, they have not been allowed to expand into greater detail than will be helpful to the object in View. The reforms of the early years of Alexander II. Have been treated much more fully, for almost all the political questions of the day in Russia are intimately connected with them and with their subsequent partial abrogation witnessed during the reactionary period of the last quarter of a century. Book My Disillusionment in Russia

Download or read book My Disillusionment in Russia written by Emma Goldman and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-01-05T03:31:26Z with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Russian Literature The Slavs, like the Latins, the Celts, and the Germans, belong to the Aryan or indo-european race. Oppressed for many years by the Western peoples, which drew the word slave from the appellation Slav, scorned by their German neighbours, who would not regard their race in any other light but that of ethnological matter (et/mo logz'seher Stofi), they probably owed their inferiority solely to their geographical position. Modern civilisation, like that of the ancients, built itself up almost independently of the Slavs. Yet they have raised their protest against a too absolute decree of exclusion, and they have right on their Side. The Slav nation did not, indeed, hollow out the channels of the double movement, intellectual or religious, Renaissance and Reform, from which the modern era issued, but it opened them in two directions. Copernicus and John Huss were both Slavs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Reform Movement in Judaism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reform Movement in Judaism Classic Reprint written by David Philipson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reform Movement in Judaism IN October, 1897, I published in the Jewish Quarterly Review an article entitled The Progress of the Jewish Reform Movement in the United States. This article was the beginning of a series of further studies on the reform movement in Judaism. These studies, which form the chapters of this book, aim to present a connected story of the progressive movement in Judaism, the most striking Jewish religious phenomenon of modern times. It has been possible in this survey to take account only of the corporate activities which translated the theories of the reformers into practice. Many statements of individ ual scholars and writers, however interesting as contribu tions to the store of liberal Jewish thought, could not be included, since this is not a history of the literary output, but of the practical achievements of reform. This 'point can be well illustrated by adverting to the case of Russia. There a number of prominent writers have pleaded strong ly for reforms in religious practice and belief, but no pub lic official steps have been taken towards carrying out these reforms. The reform movement has found no lodgment in the corporate and congregational Jewish life of Russia, hence no chapter is devoted to Russia in this work, how ever illuminating might be the statements that can be culled from the writings of Russian Jewish authors.
