It was therefore deemed advisable to produce that work as a posthumous one, and Count Paul Vassili was represented as having died before the publication of his Memoirs. This however was not the case, be cause On the contrary he went on collecting infor mation as to all that was taking place at the Russian Court as well as in the whole of Russia, and, consign ing this information to a diary, he went on writing. If one remembers, Count Vassili distinctly foresaw and prophesied in his book most of the things that have occurred since it was published. This fact will perhaps give added interest to the present account Of the Russian Revolution which now sees the light of day for the first time. Though devoid of every thing sensational or scandalous it will prove interest ing to those who have cared for the other books of Count Vassili, for it contains nothing but the truth, and has been compiled chiefly out of the narrations of the principal personages connected in some way. A few miles out of Moscow a difference arose between the engineer and the stoker, and in order to settle it they stopped the train and had a fight. One of the men hit the other on the head with a monkey wrench, injuring him pretty badly. Authority of some kind stepped in and arrested the assailant. The engineer's cab was blood-stained, and some authority unhitched the engine and sent it back to Moscow as evidence. The train all this time, with its hundreds of passengers, stood on the tracks waiting for a new engine and crew, and if it was not run into and wrecked it was because it was lucky. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917.
