Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ruskin's Principles of Art Criticism Ruskin, though he scorned metaphysical distinction and terms, was in the true sense of the word a philos opher; and it is his philosophy of art that we wish to study in this book. Philosophy is simply clear and connected thinking; philosophy of art, then, is clear and connected thinking about art, and leads to the formulation of laws and principles. Each man, if he thinks about these subjects at all, has, either con sciously or unconsciously, his philosophy of life and of art. The object of the present volume is to put Rus kin's thought on art into such a clear and logical form, that the reader can easily and rapidly compare his own theory with Ruskin's. In this work I wish to appear as an editor rather than as an expositor, although a little exposition has been found absolutely necessary. Book Interpretation of Art

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interpretation of Art: Essays on the Art Criticism of John Ruskin, Walter Pater, Clive Bell, Roger Fry and Herbert Read Insofar as criticism is applied aesthetics, I feel justified in devoting the major part of this study to the examination of aesthetic theory. My task might have been easier had any of the writers with whom I am concerned been creators Of systems, but there is nothing in English writing on art com parable to German scholarship in the nineteenth and twen tieth centuries, with its thorough investigation of art history, the psychology of perception, and the aesthetics of expression and pure visibility. My own approach is not postulated on any fixed set of aesthetic assumptions. Criticism is a complex activity, involving the subtle interaction of practice and theory. I have attempted to extract from the work of each of these writers those theoretical assumptions which form the basis of his critical practice and to trace the development of aesthetic doctrine as it was modified by the critic's experi ence of actual works of art. Book Elements of Art Criticism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Art Criticism Classic Reprint written by G. W. Samson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Art Criticism The following treatise on Art Criticism, an abridged edition of the larger work published one year ago, is specially designed to meet a demand whose existence has now been called forth. The aim of both is to awaken, to foster and to aid the growing aspiration of American students and amateurs in art. The Introduction to the larger work indicates the lack in American education which creates this demand, the methods by which teachers in other lands and ages have supplied this common aesthetic need, and the nature and ground of the author's attempt. The conviction is general that a compendious elementary treatise on the principles of design and the methods of execution in the fine arts is a special desideratum in American literature. The general education of American youth, male and female, the aspiration of men in every pursuit to fit themselves for cultured society, the growing fondness for foreign travel, have awakened a desire for compendious information as to the great world of art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ruskin on Pictures, Vol. 1: A Collection of Criticisms by John Ruskin Not Heretofore Re-Printed and Now Re-Edited and Re-Arranged Many of Mr. Ruskin's scattered pamphlets and other occasional writings have already been collected in the three volumes published in 1885 under the title "On the Old Road." His letters to the Public Press have similarly been collected in the two volumes of "Arrows of the Chace" (1880). His Catalogues and other Notes on Modem Pictures have not hitherto been collected. This is the work undertaken in the present volumes. The first volume is devoted to Turner; the second to Prout, William Hunt, and "Academy Notes." The present volume, dealing with Turner, is divided into three sections, of which the first two contain Notes by Mr. Ruskin on the works by Turner in the National Gallery. The third section consists of a reprint of "Notes by Mr. Ruskin on his Drawings by Turner, and on his own Handiwork illustrative of Turner." In the first two sections, dealing with Turner at the National Gallery, Mr. Ruskin's Notes in four different catalogues are included. Of these, one was only printed for private circulation, and two have been out of print for more than forty years. The object aimed at in the arrangement of this volume is to make it available, among other purposes, for use in the Gallery itself. This object has governed the manner in which the text of Mr. Ruskin's catalogues has been treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Selected Writings

Download or read book Selected Writings written by John Ruskin and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 1991 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ruskin was the most powerful and influential art critic and social commentator of the Victorian nineteenth century. A true polymath, he wrote about nature, art, architecture, politics, history, myth and much more. All of his work is characterized by a clarity of vision as unsettling and intense now as it was for his first readers. This new selection includes wide-ranging extracts of Ruskin's texts, from the early 1840s to the late 1880s, as well as representative material from each of his major works. Modern Painters, The Stones of Venice, and Sesame and Lilies are juxtaposed with less familiar writing on science and myth. An authoritative introduction outlines Ruskin's life and thought, making it clear why his writing is still relevant today. This new edition also includes a selection of Ruskin's own illustrations.

Book excerpt: Selections From the Works of John Ruskin by John Ruskin Introduction Two conflicting tendencies in Ruskin. It is distinctive of the nineteenth century that in its passion for criticising everything in heaven and earth it by no means spared to criticise itself. Alike in Carlyle's fulminations against its insincerity, in Arnold's nice ridicule of Philistinism, and in Ruskin's repudiation of everything modern, we detect that fine dissatisfaction with the age which is perhaps only proof of its idealistic trend. For the various ills of society, each of these men had his panacea. What Carlyle had found in hero-worship and Arnold in Hellenic culture, Ruskin sought in the study of art; and it is of the last importance to remember that throughout his work he regarded himself not merely as a writer on painting or buildings or myths or landscape, but as the appointed critic of the age. For there existed in him, side by side with his consuming love of the beautiful, a rigorous Puritanism which was constantly correcting any tendency toward a mere cult of the aesthetic. It is with the interaction of these two forces that any study of the life and writings of Ruskin should be primarily concerned.
