Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Problems of Today Rural life has as many sides as there are human interests. This book looks out upon country-fife conditions from a viewpoint comparatively neglected. It attempts to approach rural social life from the psychological angle. The pur pose oi the book forces it from the Well beaten pathways, but this effort to give emphasis to the mental side of rural problems is not an attempt to discount the other significant aspects of the rural environment. The field of rural service is large enough to contain all Who desire by serious study to advance at some point the happiness, prosperity, and Whole someness that belong by social right to those Who live and work in the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some English Rural Problems: Seven Essays The complication of voices is without parallel. It is likely enough that distance makes us under estimate the jolting of minds caused always by a civilization's changing of gear - from family to tribe, from tribe to petty kingdom, from petty kingdom to nation. In the day of these changes probably none of them seemed to have taken place naturally. None the less it must be admitted that at no earlier period in history can the road Of social progress have appeared bestrewn with such various obstacles. Even if at any time so many obstacles had been lying around, they would not all have had to be encountered. In England, at any rate, stumbling blocks have often been escaped by those unaware of their existence difficulties never looked at in theory have fairly often solved themselves in practice. Part, indeed, of the Englishman's present difficulty lies in finding himself, without any national gift for theorizing, obliged now to formulate his beliefs and. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem and the Catholic School One of the outstanding problems in American rural life today is to be found in the decline of the rural church. Surveys conducted in recent years point to this defect as one of the cancers that are eating the Vitals out of American public life. Religion must enter into the hearts of the people or evil looms up for the future. It is, indeed, only too true that the country church, both in Catholic and non-catholic circles, is not fulfilling the mission for which it was intended. We have tried to present in a handy form facts and figures up to date on many aspects of the question, and we hope that these will render the book useful even to readers who may differ from some of the conclusions we have based upon them. Book Country Life and Rural Problems

Download or read book Country Life and Rural Problems written by Mary Katharine Reely and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Life and Rural Problems: A Study Outline This study outline takes up some of the social problems of the country community. It suggests a series of discussions on subjects related to the farm home, the country church, the rural school and the rural neighborhood. It is not concerned with the business of farming or with the profession of housekeeping. It does not touch on the economic problems of farm life. These subjects - marketing, farm labor, rural credits, the cooperative movement, etc. - may be covered in a later outline if it seems desirable. How to Use the Outline Adapt the outline to your own community needs. There are five main divisions of the subject: The Farm Home; The Rural School; The Country Church; Community Life; and The Country Town. Give as much time to the discussion of each of these subjects as the needs of your community demand. Under each subject you will find topics for discussion. An entire evening or afternoon's program may be given to one topic, or several topics may be combined to make up one program. The subject of the rural school, for instance, if covered thoroly might occupy four, or perhaps five, programs. But if you already enjoy the advantages of school consolidation you will need to give less time to this subject. How To Get Reference Material Each subject for discussion is followed by a list of references for reading and study. Book Problems of Rural Elderly Households in Powell County Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of Rural Elderly Households in Powell County Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Donald K. Larson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Rural Elderly Households in Powell County, Kentucky Many of the problems that arise for the rural elderly today are closely associated with the composition of their households. For Americans in general, the household is the locus of decisions that affect the economic and overall well-being of all members. Frequently, incomes are pooled, members share arrangements for food and other living essentials, and financial and property assets are jointly owned. However, little effort has been directed toward understanding the nature of rural elderly households. Recognition of major differences in household composition is essential for developing solutions to problems facing the rural elderly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Challenge of the Country: A Study of Country Life Opportunity Tms study of country life opportunity and analysis of various phases of the rural problems in America has been written at the request of the International Committee of Young Men's Christian Associations, particularly for their County Work and Student de partments. The former desired a handbook for the training of leaders in rural Christian work and the latter a textbook for the use of college students in Christian Associations wishing to study the funda mentals of rural social service and rural progress. It is the sincere hope of those who have asked for this book that it may bring to very many earnest young men and women, and especially in the colleges of the United States and Canada, a challenging vision of the need of trained leadership in every phase of rural life, as well as a real opportunity for life investment. Being the first book in the field which makes avail able the results of the Thirteenth U. S. Census, it is hoped that its fresh treatment of the latest aspects of the rural problems will commend itself to general readers who are interested in the Rural Life Move ment and the welfare of the rural three-fifths of America. Book The Rural Life Problem of the United States

Download or read book The Rural Life Problem of the United States written by Horace Plunkett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Life Problem of the United States: Notes of an Irish Obeserver The thoughts contained in the following pages relate to one side of the life of a country which has been to me, as to many Irishmen, a second home. They are offered in friendly recognition of kindness I cannot hope to repay, received largely as a student of American social and economic problems, from public-spirited Americans who, I know, will appreciate most highly any slight service to their country. The substance of the book appeared in five articles contributed to the New York Outlook under the title "Conservation and Rural Life." Several American friends, deeply interested in the Rural Life problem, asked me to republish the series. In doing so, I have felt that I ought to present a more comprehensive view of my subject than either the space allowed or the more casual publication demanded. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book The Rural Community Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rural Community Classic Reprint written by Llewellyn Macgarr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Community Country life in America is improving. The outlook of country people is broadening, their sympathies are deepening, and the real satisfactions of life are increasing. In these regards the few are, however, far in advance of the many. A movement is now under way which purposes to show country people everywhere how to live the more satisfactory life. There are many whose lives are too concentrated upon debt paying to be conscious of life as it passes; others have lapsed into a state of inertia of body and mind which makes them cry out, "Leave us alone; we are all right," while they live selfish, bickering lives, without any of the blessings which come from associating with and trying to please other people. The country life movement is largely one of encouraging a higher standard of living in the home and of stimulating social activities of various kinds which relieve the isolation of country life. This can be done by showing what the more progressive farmers and farming communities are doing to make life worth while. It is believed that this educational work will lead to spontaneous efforts to live a more satisfactory life on the part of the farming population. The schools, churches, and clubs are the organized efforts for rural betterment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
