This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revival of Population Growth in Nonmetropolitan America The vast rural-to-urban migration of people that was the common pattern of us. Population movement in the decades after World War II has been halted and, on balance, even reversed. During 1970-73, nonmetropolitan areas gained percent in population compared to only percent for metro areas. In the eyes of many Americans, the appeal of major urban areas has diminished and the attractiveness of rural and small town communities has increased, economi cally and otherwise. The result is a new trend that is already having an impact, one that modifies much we have taken for granted about population distribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Negro Migration: Changes in Rural Organization and Population of the Cotton Belt Negro migration, like the movement of any people, may be associated with definite social and economic forces. It is desirable that the student retain, in proper perspective, this general significance of a population movement even while examining its interesting details. With this in view, the effort throughout the study has been to describe, in terms of current usage in social science, the movements of colored people in the United States, the conditions from which they arise, and the consequences which attend them. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Rural Life in the United States In this pronouncement we have in the minimum of words'the maximum of constructive suggestion. In the near background we see the picture of country life in its untutored, undisciplined and, consequently, unavailing competition With the modern town. In the foreground we see, through the application to the country of the methods to which the town owes its progress, the dawn of better things. But the central fact of these utterances I desire to emphasise is that, in the mind of the President, the situation to which he is calling public attention is clearly one of which the Department of Agriculture holds the key. Book The Rural Exodus

Download or read book The Rural Exodus written by P. Anderson Graham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Exodus: The Problem of the Village and the Town IF I were to. Write a list of the authorities consulted for the making of this little volume it would not consist of the names of books and of writers, but of obscure men who, in the rural districts of England, are doing their work and living their lives. For several years back, having been deeply impressed with the magnitude and importance of the migration to town, it has been my habit to discuss the question with all sorts and conditions of countrymen. The study, if I may dignify it with a term so austere, began in a semi-depopulated district that I have known since childhood. It was needless to ask questions there. Hardly has one family left without my knowing why, when, and whither it went. The knowledge thus acquired served as a basis of more. In any new district it was but natural to ask if the same conditions prevailed, or what other influences came into Operation. And as I have wandered in most of the English Shires, conversing freely alike with the landlord and the tenant, Anglican and Dis senter, the hind at his plough, the ratcatcher working ditches with ferret and terrier, the Agrarian lecturer, the village atheist, the poacher, the grocer, and doctor and land agent, it is my own blame if I have not Obtained a tolerably correct notion of the ideas and aspirations of the English villager. My chief regret is, thati possess no equally intimate knowledge of foreign countries in order to determine how far a movement, world-wide in operation, is world-wide in its causes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Life Problem of the United States: Notes of an Irish Obeserver The thoughts contained in the following pages relate to one side of the life of a country which has been to me, as to many Irishmen, a second home. They are offered in friendly recognition of kindness I cannot hope to repay, received largely as a student of American social and economic problems, from public-spirited Americans who, I know, will appreciate most highly any slight service to their country. The substance of the book appeared in five articles contributed to the New York Outlook under the title "Conservation and Rural Life." Several American friends, deeply interested in the Rural Life problem, asked me to republish the series. In doing so, I have felt that I ought to present a more comprehensive view of my subject than either the space allowed or the more casual publication demanded. Book Rural Sociology Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Sociology Since the first edition Of this book was published in 1948, the world has seen the results of World War II and of its aftermath, the Cold War, made manifest in human affairs. These events have had a serious impact upon rural life in the United States. In the main, the result has been to accelerate the rate of social change. All aspects Of life, material and non material, seem to have been affected. The advances in agricultural technology have never been equaled in a comparable period in American history. For example, electricity has been brought to nearly all the farms of the nation for the first time as late as 1935, only one in ten farms was served from a central electric generator. Farm production has steadily mounted, while the number of farms has steadily declined. The farm population has become thinner. Tractors have largely replaced horses; and the ingenious machines associated with the tractor have so reduced the need for human labor that migration from farms to cities, towns, and villages has become a Spectacle rivaling the enclosures in Britain in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. These changes have affected the social relations of rural people. The institutions Of education, religion, government, and family have had important adjustments to make. Even so, the full effects of this New Industrial Revolution in agriculture have not been fully experienced and understood. More changes are yet to come. In this revision, the author has introduced facts to indicate the re markable changes that have taken place during the past decade and a half. Since the changes are still in process, it is impossible to do more than indicate the trends and suggest directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Negro Migration N treating this movement of the Negroes, the writer does not presume to say the last word on the subject. The exodus of the Negroes from the South has just begun. The blacks have re cently realized that they have freedom of body and they will now proceed to exercise that right. To presume, therefore, to exhaust the treatment of this movement in its incipiency is far from the intention of the writer. The aim here is rather to direct attention to this new phase of Negro American life which will doubtless prove to be the most significant event in our local his tory since the Civil War.
