Book Rural Access to Art and Art Education

Download or read book Rural Access to Art and Art Education written by Mary Milliken and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arts have been used to revitalize communities, improve psychological well being, and provide a catalyst for social change (Guetzkow, 2002, p. 2). My research examined access to the arts and art education in the rural, small town of Elmira, NY, where I was born and raised. In 2012, I returned to work there as an artist and educator after living in New York City and learned there are obstacles for prioritizing the arts in Elmira. When I came to Chicago to study art education, I noticed similarities between Elmira and communities in Chicago. Although these places are categorized differently (rural and urban) and are nearly 700 miles apart, both face obstacles for bringing community members together to provide access to the arts and art education, like poverty and racial segregation. In my thesis, I explored some of the struggles that artists, educators, and arts advocates face in Elmira in order to make connections to the complexities that communities grapple with throughout the United States. The primary goal of my research was to create a conversation in which experiences are recognized and acknowledged. My research questions were: how might Elmira struggle to prioritize the arts and art education? Why might a person be interested in advocating for the arts and art education in Elmira? Why might a person coming from the Elmira experience of art and art education choose to pursue a creative career elsewhere? How might my research be influenced by my experience as an insider, who lived and worked in Elmira for many years, and as an outsider, who has now lived in Chicago for almost two years? My research was a qualitative case study in which I conducted interviews with various members of the Elmira arts community over the course of a month, both in Elmira and remotely in Chicago. Data consisted of my own observations and experiences, interview transcriptions, and scholarly sources pertaining to the topic. I discovered through my research that Elmira offers myriad challenges for creating arts and art education access, such as a lack of economic prosperity and a dwindling population. I also found that Elmira has more access to the arts and art education than I realized, including arts organizations, museums, and community events.

Book Community Based Art Education Across the Lifespan

Download or read book Community Based Art Education Across the Lifespan written by Pamela Harris Lawton and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of Community-Based Art Education (CBAE). CBAE encourages learners to make connections between their art education in a classroom setting and its application in the community beyond school, with demonstrable examples of how the arts impact responsible citizenship. Written by and for visual art educators, this resource offers guidance on how to thoughtfully and successfully execute CBAE in the pre-K–12 classroom and with adult learners, taking a broad view towards intergenerational art learning. Chapters include vignettes, exemplars of practice, curriculum examples that incorporate the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards, and research frameworks for developing, implementing, and assessing CBAE projects. “This is the book I have been waiting for—carefully researched, thought-provoking, and inspiring.” —Lily Yeh, Barefoot Artists Inc. “A practical guide for community-based art education that is theoretically grounded in social justice. Insightful suggestions for working with communities, planning, creating transformative learning, and evaluating outcomes are based in the authors’ deep experience. This book is a timely and welcome volume that will be indispensable to individuals and community organizations working in the arts for positive change.” —Elizabeth Garber, professor emeritus, University of Arizona

Book Place based Education in a Rural High School Art Foundations Course

Download or read book Place based Education in a Rural High School Art Foundations Course written by Dustyn C. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A place-based art education is a suggested course of action when students appear disconnected to the environment where they are living and the artwork they are producing. The literature is reviewed considering place-based education, art education, community-based education, and a culturally responsive pedagogy in order to develop a place-based art curriculum that is taught to high school students, grades nine through twelve in a rural high school. Students consider their Place as the natural, social, and emotional environments of their life. The outcomes of teaching the place-based art curriculum are interpreted using the evidence of students' work and writings as they relate to the aims and objectives of the curriculum.

Book excerpt: The kindergarten through twelfth-grade curriculum often separates academic disciplines, student interests, and the local culture and geography. This division of information can discourage students from connecting overarching concepts to the relationship of lived experiences. Therefore, bridging these ideas together helps provide educational significance and personal meaning while encouraging learners to develop a sense of place. My dissertation explores how rural students make these connections through the research and artmaking process. In a semester-long ethnographically informed investigation, I collaborated with an art instructor to research within her high school class, Art Experiences. We used an art integrative place-based framework to guide our inquiry. To ground our research in a classroom setting, we modeled the curriculum after art educator and theorist Julia Marshalls (2014a) art integrative transdisciplinary approachArt Research Integration (ARI). ARI positions students as artist-researchers who independently explore topics of interest through thematic investigation. This process encourages learners to connect overarching concepts with their lives outside of school. Following Marshalls model, students in our study embraced the artist-researcher role. To support lived experiences from a cultural and geographic perspective, we intertwined ARI with place-based inquiry. Its inclusion aimed to foster learners curiosity about the surrounding rural area. Through investigation of an individualized locally-themed question, each student followed a unique research trail. Learners documented their research in sketchbooks which provided them a space to brainstorm ideas, create concept maps, and archive resources. Students drew sketches to express what they had learned from their exploration. Using their sketches as inspiration, students created works of art to complement their research findings. During my inquiry, I examined how students explored diverse academic subjects, their interests, and the local area using an art integrative place-based approach. I focused on explicating how and in what ways learners wove together academic disciplinary knowledge, how ARI facilitated a transdisciplinary process of learning, and the ways using a place-based rural perspective helped to understand learner decision making better. Answering these questions provided insight into the ways learners became artist-researchers, understood content interconnectivity, and linked lived experience with place to enhance personal meaning.

Book Do Community based Art Projects Make a Difference

Download or read book Do Community based Art Projects Make a Difference written by Sandra Murphy-Pak and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about community0́3based art programs in urban settings. The purpose of my research is to shed light on how arts programming can benefit a rural community. Through the examination of current and past programs established by the University of Florida0́9s Center for the Arts in Healthcare, Shands Arts in Medicine program, and a review of related literature on issues surrounding art education in rural communities, this project attempts to answer the question: Do community art projects make a difference? The purpose of this one-week capstone project was to create a sculpture project with middle school students in the art class at the Apalachicola Bay Charter School. In addition to implementing the art activity, curriculum was developed for the teacher. I concentrated my study at the Apalachicola Bay Charter School in an effort to investigate issues relevant to the question 0́−Do community art projects make a difference?0́− In doing so I explored issues such as access to resources plus the sustainability and efficacy of arts programs. My research attempts to define how the arts can help struggling communities for the art education community.
