Book Runyankore Rukiga English Picture Dictionary

Download or read book Runyankore Rukiga English Picture Dictionary written by Dr. Mollynn Mugisha-Otim and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-04-14 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Runyankore is a Bantu language spoken by people in South West Uganda. Rukiga language is a similar and partially mutually intelligible with the Runyankore language. It is spoken by the people in Kigezi region. Some people argue that because the two languages are so similar, they consider them dialects of the same language, hence the term Runyankore-Rukiga. Whilst a very old language, the written literature is still not common place. There are very few (illustrated) children’s books for young ones to learn the language. That is why I have created this simple picture dictionary. The book aims to help one pick up vocabulary and has some simple sentences that can be used in commonly encountered scenarios in daily living. This can help one to make comfortable introductions and simple conversations. Children learn in a playful manner. Included are some beautiful childhood songs, rhymes and games. I hope this book will stimulate parents to introduce the language to their children early in life when learning languages is easiest. Book Societies Religion and History

Download or read book Societies Religion and History written by Rhonda M. Gonzales and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars often equate a Swahili presence with the moment history began on the Tanzanian central coast. In this book, Rhonda M. Gonzales proposes an altogether different and more comprehensive narrative. Societies, Religion, and History is the first study to apply historical linguistic methods to the Bantu-speaking peoples of the coastal and interior regions of central east Tanzania, individuals and communities who later became part of the Swahili world. The Seuta and Ruvu Bantu societies were entrenched along the coast and interior of Tanzania for centuries before Swahili-speaking populations expanded their towns and settlements southward along the East African coastline. Making use of historical linguistics, the findings of cutting-edge archaeologists, ethnographic sources, and her own extensive field research, Gonzales unfolds a historical panorama of thriving societies engaged in vibrant cross-cultural exchange and prosperous regional and transoceanic networks. According to Gonzales, scholars need to integrate these communities into their stories if they are to compose a full and satisfying history of central eastern Tanzania. Recovering this history requires close attention to the happenings of the interior, often misleadingly referred to--and treated--as hinterland. Toward that end, Gonzales combines a challenging range of historical resources to build a long-term history of the social, cultural, and religious beliefs and practices of the region as they have developed over the past 2,000 years.

Book Demonstratives

Download or read book Demonstratives written by Holger Diessel and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All languages have demonstratives, but their form, meaning and use vary tremendously across the languages of the world. This book presents the first large-scale analysis of demonstratives from a cross-linguistic and diachronic perspective. It is based on a representative sample of 85 languages. The first part of the book analyzes demonstratives from a synchronic point of view, examining their morphological structures, semantic features, syntactic functions, and pragmatic uses in spoken and written discourse. The second part concentrates on diachronic issues, in particular on the development of demonstratives into grammatical markers. Across languages demonstratives provide a frequent historical source for definite articles, relative and third person pronouns, nonverbal copulas, sentence connectives, directional preverbs, focus markers, expletives, and many other grammatical markers. The book describes the different mechanisms by which demonstratives grammaticalize and argues that the evolution of grammatical markers from demonstratives is crucially distinct from other cases of grammaticalization.
