Book excerpt: Learn to live with God instead of for God. In this candid and achingly authentic book, Fil Anderson shares the healing insights that restored his spiritual compass and guided him back to God--the God who specializes in filling empty souls. Fil Anderson had accomplished more for God than most of his contemporaries, but his worn-out body housed an empty soul. His frenetic pace of ministry had earned him just one thing: greater pressure to do even more. He had fallen for the soul-killing lie that doing more for God would give his life meaning. Then the godly admonition of a spiritual director set this burned-out believer on a life-saving spiritual path. Sometimes the only way to get a new life is by running your old one completely into the ground. This powerful story of a reawakened soul can be the story of every person who has pursued spiritual productivity over intimacy with God and come up empty. It’s the story of reclaiming your soul and finding a home in the center of God’s relentless love. It’s the journey from self-importance to God-importance. “To the harried and the unharried, I pray that this book will minister to your heart in the profound way that it has blessed mine.” —Brennan Manning

Book Life in the Fast Lane

Download or read book Life in the Fast Lane written by Mick Wall and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Surely make you lose your mind…” So the Eagles warn us about the outrageous and ruthless lifestyle of the ambitious rock-n-roller. In fact, Don Henley could barely listen to the track “Life in the Fast Lane” when they were recording it. He was so high that it made him sick. The band that embodied the American dream with globe-straddling success, impossibly luxurious lives, and almost supernatural talent also descended into nightmare with bloodletting betrayal, hate-filled hubris, the skeletons of perceived enemies, brutally discarded lovers and former band mates left unburied in the road behind them. The Eagles’ story is a truly gothic American fable: one of ultimate power and rivers of money; of sex and drugs at a time when both were the lingua-franca of sophisticated So-Cal living; of a band who sang of peaceful easy feelings in public while threatening to kill each other in private. Now, legendary rock journalist Mick Wall delivers definitive insight into America's best-selling band of all time, a band that has sold more records than Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones combined, exploring their meteoric rise to fame and the hedonistic days of the 70s music scene in LA, when American music was taking over the world.

Book Baltimore Kid

Download or read book Baltimore Kid written by Tom DiVenti and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty essays from Tom DiVenti's original Splice Series, an American mythology in plain language. The author defines himself, his context and our shadows, all in flickering neon. Mr. DiVenti survived the game and took the trouble to write it all down, aware of this moment in history. The essays are meant to be read aloud, where drinks are served, and lighting isn't great. He writes of the confused emotion defining an age in which we are saturated in the deep fried oil of advertising. Used car salesman are synonymous with American politicians. The collection is timed perfectly. Not since the sixties has there been this much outrage with the irrationally driven state of affairs, our cycles of corruption and abundance of hidden information. Tom writes about what we have stepped in, that pile on the sidewalk, communicating like a beer bottle thrown against a barroom wall, shattering beside the black and white broadcasting evening news that reports on all that is being "e;destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked . . ."e;

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of Saigon in April 1975 resulted in the largest and most ambitious refugee resettlement effort in Canada’s history. Running on Empty presents the challenges and successes of this bold refugee resettlement program. It traces the actions of a few dozen men and women who travelled to seventy remote refugee camps, worked long days in humid conditions, subsisted on dried noodles and green tea, and sometimes slept on their worktables while rats scurried around them – all in order to resettle thousands of people displaced by war and oppression. After initially accepting 7,000 refugees from camps in Guam, Hong Kong, and military bases in the US in 1975, Canada passed the 1976 Immigration Act to establish new refugee procedures and introduce private refugee sponsorship. In July of 1979, the federal government under Prime Minister Joe Clark announced that Canada would accept an unprecedented 50,000 refugees – later increased to 60,000 – more than half of whom would be sponsored by ordinary Canadians. Running on Empty presents gripping first-hand accounts of the government officials tasked with selecting refugees from eight different countries, receiving and matching them with sponsors, and helping churches, civic organizations, and groups of neighbours to receive and integrate the newcomers in cities, towns, and rural communities across Canada. Timely and inspiring, Running on Empty offers essential lessons for governments, organizations, and individuals trying to come to grips with refugee crises in the twenty-first century.

Book Global West  American Frontier

Download or read book Global West American Frontier written by David M. Wrobel and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful examination of a century of travel writing about the American West overturns a variety of popular and academic stereotypes. Looking at both European and American travelers’ accounts of the West, from de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America to William Least Heat-Moon’s Blue Highways, David Wrobel offers a counter narrative to the nation’s romantic entanglement with its western past and suggests the importance of some long-overlooked authors, lively and perceptive witnesses to our history who deserve new attention. Prior to the professionalization of academic disciplines, the reading public gained much of its knowledge about the world from travel writing. Travel writers found a wide and respectful audience for their reports on history, geography, and the natural world, in addition to reporting on aboriginal cultures before the advent of anthropology as a discipline. Although in recent decades western historians have paid little attention to travel writing, Wrobel demonstrates that this genre in fact offers an important and rich understanding of the American West—one that extends and complicates a simple reading of the West that promotes the notions of Manifest Destiny or American exceptionalism. Wrobel finds counterpoints to the mythic West of the nineteenth century in such varied accounts as George Catlin’s Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in England, France, and Belgium (1852), Richard Francis Burton’s The City of the Saints (1861), and Mark Twain’s Following the Equator (1897), reminders of the messy and contradictory world that people navigated in the past much as they do in the present. His book is a testament to the instructive ways in which the best travel writers have represented the West.

In today’s world, technology has added additional pressure and anxiety to life rather than saving precious time. With digital distractions and social isolation, people become less self-aware—an important key to surviving. Book Running on Empty in Central America

Download or read book Running on Empty in Central America written by A. Imtiaz Hussain and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running on Empty explores the efforts of Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. to deepen their involvement in the economy of Central America. Despite organized efforts and initiatives--all belong to NAFTA and FTA--only the efforts of the U.S. succeeded, while Canada failed, and Mexico still struggles. Why? In this new work, author A. Imtiaz Hussain questions if it was in fact HOW they negotiated their case that precipitated their success or failure. In a structured focused analysis, which references the works of Richard Feinberg, Mark Habeeb, and Alexander George, among others, Running on Empty examines Canada's Central American Four Free Trade Agreement (CA4FTA), U.S. strategic imperatives such as CAFTA and their trading history in Central America, and Mexico's ongoing reconstruction efforts. The work also inquires about the implications of increased activity in the Central American economy, such as widening societal and environmental gaps and CAFTA ratification strengthening FTAA momentum at Brazil's expense. Intended for use by students and scholars of international politics and economics in North, Central, and Latin America and political scientists, this work explores an increasingly prominent economic and political issue.
