Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER I. "The plague of a smoking Chimney is proverbial; but there are many other very great defects in open Fire-places, as they are now commonly constructed in this country, and indeed throughout Europe, which, being less obvious, are seldom attended to; and there are some of them very fatal in their consequences to health; and, I am persuaded, cost the lives of thousands every year in this island. Those cold and chilling draughts of air on one side of the body, while the other side is scorched by a Chimney Fire, which every one who reads this must often have felt, cannot but be highly detrimental to health; and in weak and delicate constitutions must often produce the most fatal effects.--I have no doubt in my mind that thousands die in this country every year of consumption, occasioned solely by this cause.--By a cause which might be so easily removed!-- By a cause whose removal would tend to promote comfort and convenience in so many ways. Strongly impressed as my mind is with the importance of this subject, it is not possible for me to remain silent.--The subject is too nearly connected with many of the most essential enjoyments of life not to be highly interesting to all those who feel pleasure in promoting, or in contemplating the comfort and happiness of mankind.-- And without suffering myself to be deterred, either by the fear of being thought to give to the subject a degree of importance to which it is not entitled, or by the apprehension of being tiresome to my readers by the prolixity of my descriptions, I shall proceed to investigate the subject in all its parts and details with the utmost care and attention, and first with regard to smoking Chimnies: There are various causes by which Chimnies may be prevented from...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rumford Fireplaces and How They Are Made Several years ago I had occasion to build a house for James R. Steers, Esq., who was deeply interested in this subject of fireplaces and who brought to my notice a book of essays by Count of Rumford. And among them one on fireplace construction and alter ation. My main object in publishing this little book is to reproduce this essay in the hope that it will be inwardly digested bv the architect, the layman, and the builder, and that it will at least in a measure help to im prove the condition of a very important and much neglected feature of our homes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippest places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction. Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisanal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America. Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens. The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including: Connoisseurs of good bread and good food. Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence. Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery. Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project. Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.

Book Home Fires

Download or read book Home Fires written by Sean Patrick Adams and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Easily the most thorough and best-grounded account of the coal-based system of heating in the nineteenth-century United States . . . authoritative.” —The New England Quarterly Home Fires tells the fascinating story of how changes in home heating over the nineteenth century spurred the growth of networks that helped remake American society. Sean Patrick Adams reconstructs the ways in which the “industrial hearth” appeared in American cities, the methods that entrepreneurs in home heating markets used to convince consumers that their product designs and fuel choices were superior, and how elite, middle-class, and poor Americans responded to these overtures. Adams depicts the problem of dwindling supplies of firewood and the search for alternatives; the hazards of cutting, digging, and drilling in the name of home heating; the trouble and expense of moving materials from place to place; the rise of steam power; the growth of an industrial economy; and questions of economic efficiency, at both the individual household and the regional level. Home Fires makes it clear that debates over energy sources, energy policy, and company profit margins have been around a long time. The challenge of staying warm in the industrializing North becomes a window into the complex world of energy transitions, economic change, and emerging consumerism. Readers will understand the struggles of urban families as they sought to adapt to the ever-changing nineteenth-century industrial landscape. This perspective allows a unique view of the development of an industrial society not just from the ground up but from the hearth up. “This smartly written and well-informed book focuses on a subject that very few people think about—the history of home heating in America.” —Choice

Download or read book Collected Works of Count Rumford Devices and techniques written by Benjamin Graf von Rumford and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Thompson (later Count Rumford) aimed by his inventions and scientific research to increase the degree of comfort in daily life. His goals were practical and his contributions to our knowledge of the nature of heat proved extremely valuable. Between 1870 and 1875, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Boston published all of Rumford's papers that the Academy committee was able to find. The Academy edition, however, has long been out of print and practically unavailable. Here Sanborn Brown has rearranged the papers according to subject matter. Volume I contains Rumford's papers on the nature of heat; the second covers its practical applications. This third volume contains his papers on devices and techniques, including "Use of Steam for Transporting Heat"; "Means of Heating the Hall of the (French) Institute"; "New Boiler for Saving Fuel"; "Steam Heat for Making Soap"; "Fires in Closed Fire-Places"; "Kitchen Fire-Places"; "Salubrity of Warm Rooms"; "Salubrity of Warm Bathing"; "The Strength of Silk"; "Quantities of Absorbed Moisture"; "Advantage of Wheels with Broad Felloes"; and "Proposals for Building a Frigate."
