The young men that comprised the 1888 team were sporting pioneers, undertaking a high-risk tour not sanctioned by British Rugby union authorities. The Lions team included international players and highly regarded stars of famous clubs. They took on the best representative teams in NSW, Queensland and New Zealand in more than 30 matches. Then, in a forgotten chapter of sports history, the Lions switched codes to play 19 games against the best Australian rules clubs of Victoria and South Australia. Midway through the tour a tragic boating accident took away the life of the team's captain, Bob Seddon. Despite their grief, and encouraged by messages of support from across Australia, the team rallied to continue the tour.
