Book The Journal and Letters of Captain Charles Bishop on the North West Coast of America in the Pacific and in New South Wales 1794 1799

Download or read book The Journal and Letters of Captain Charles Bishop on the North West Coast of America in the Pacific and in New South Wales 1794 1799 written by Michael Roe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1794, Charles Bishop sailed from Bristol as master of the Ruby, a trading ship bound for north-west America. He had instructions to procure otter furs from the Indians and then to proced to Canton via Japan and sell the cargo. During the years 1794-1802, he rounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. In the Moluccas, he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus; correspondingly, the text is divided into two sections. This narrative is Bishop's journal of his voyages and relates a minor epic of adventure, courage and turbulent fortune. The records of his letters and financial accounts show something of the ships' general organization, and of the seamen who served such expeditions. Bishop also describes the various ports and peoples he encountered; his experiences typify European contacts in the Pacific, and the reaction between trader, missionary, administrator and local inhabitant. Dr Roe's introduction gives the background to the trading voyages of the 18th century and describes Bishop's pwn history. Records of his life continue until 1809, ending tragically in Sydney, where he passed some years in poverty and insanity, before being returned to England. . This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1967.

Book Sacramental Letters

Download or read book Sacramental Letters written by Nina Butorac and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacramental Letters is a spirited exploration of the sacramental themes that underlie some of our more profound literature. While it is a serious literary study, it is also a religious journey into the meaning of the sacraments and the underlying grace that imbues our world. From a uniquely Catholic perspective, the author offers new and challenging insights into the works of Albert Camus, Flannery O’Connor, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Merton, Graham Greene, Annie Dillard, and Richard Rodriguez. Readers will explore the themes of sin, guilt, redemption, grace, suffering, and sanctity, as they are revealed through the sacraments of the church and in the creative craft of each writer. Sacramental Letters challenges the Christian disciple to gain a new perspective, a new way of seeing, and to engage the world with compassion, responding to the longing each one of us has to love the world as Christ loves us. This is an indispensable itinerary for any spiritual traveler, Catholic book club, or religious classroom setting.

This book begins with a quick-start tutorial to the language, and then explains the language in detail from the bottom up: from lexical and syntactic structure to datatypes to expressions and statements and on through methods, blocks, lambdas, closures, classes and modules. The book also includes a long and thorough introduction to the rich API of the Ruby platform, demonstrating -- with heavily-commented example code -- Ruby's facilities for text processing, numeric manipulation, collections, input/output, networking, and concurrency. Book Letters

Download or read book Letters written by Saint Peter Damian and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Damian (1007-1072), an 11th-century monk and man of letters, left a large and significant body of correspondence. This third volume of The Letters of Peter Damian is an annotated translation of Letters 61-90. These letters reveal the author's concern with the contemporary need for reforms, centering on clerical, especially episcopal, celibacy and on the heresy of simony which involved the purchase of ecclesiastical offices. Because Damian's Latin was a living language that surpasses the ability of classical Latin lexicography to cope with it, all disciplines that make use of medieval thought will welcome this English translation. Owen J. Blum's notes to each letter indicate the vocabulary problems he encountered and how they were resolved. This third volume, like its companions, uses Damian's thought to understand an important and gripping period in the history of church and state.
