Book Front Line Public Diplomacy

Download or read book Front Line Public Diplomacy written by W. Rugh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first-ever close and up-to-date look at how American diplomats working at our embassies abroad communicate with foreign audiences to explain US foreign policy and American culture and society. Projecting an American voice abroad has become more difficult in the twenty-first century, as terrorists and others hostile to America use modern communication means to criticize us, and as new communication tools have greatly expanded the worldwide discussion of issues important to us, so that terrorists and others hostile to us have added negative voices to the global dialogue. It analyzes the communication tools our public diplomacy professionals use, and how they employ interpersonal and language skills to engage our critics. It shows how they overcome obstacles erected by unfriendly governments, and explains that diplomats do not simply to reiterate set policy formulations but engage a variety of people from different cultures in a creative ways to increase their understanding of America.

Book Landslides and Engineered Slopes Experience Theory and Practice

Download or read book Landslides and Engineered Slopes Experience Theory and Practice written by Stefano Aversa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 2224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides and Engineered Slopes. Experience, Theory and Practice contains the invited lectures and all papers presented at the 12th International Symposium on Landslides, (Naples, Italy, 12-19 June 2016). The book aims to emphasize the relationship between landslides and other natural hazards. Hence, three of the main sessions focus on Volcanic-induced landslides, Earthquake-induced landslides and Weather-induced landslides respectively, while the fourth main session deals with Human-induced landslides. Some papers presented in a special session devoted to "Subareal and submarine landslide processes and hazard” and in a “Young Session” complete the books. Landslides and Engineered Slopes. Experience, Theory and Practice underlines the importance of the classic approach of modern science, which moves from experience to theory, as the basic instrument to study landslides. Experience is the key to understand the natural phenomena focusing on all the factors that play a major role. Theory is the instrument to manage the data provided by experience following a mathematical approach; this allows not only to clarify the nature and the deep causes of phenomena but mostly, to predict future and, if required, manage similar events. Practical benefits from the results of theory to protect people and man-made works. Landslides and Engineered Slopes. Experience, Theory and Practice is useful to scientists and practitioners working in the areas of rock and soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geology.

Book Reference Guide for Applying Risk and Reliability Based Approaches for Bridge Scour Prediction

Download or read book Reference Guide for Applying Risk and Reliability Based Approaches for Bridge Scour Prediction written by Peter Frederick Lagasse and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 761: Reference Guide for Applying Risk and Reliability-Based Approaches for Bridge Scour Prediction presents a reference guide designed to help identify and evaluate the uncertainties associated with bridge scour prediction including hydrologic, hydraulic, and model/equation uncertainty. For complex foundation systems and channel conditions, the report includes a step-by-step procedure designed to provide scour factors for site-specific conditions."--Publisher's description.

Book Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes for Concrete Structures

Download or read book Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes for Concrete Structures written by American Concrete Institute and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1999 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes was the first opportunity for 'The Concrete Committee' of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) to organize an international event to disseminate its own research products and activities world wide. The topic of the seminar was selected following the 1996 publication of 'The Seismic Design Code' by 'The Concrete Committee' of JSCE. The damages suffered by modern concrete structures during the Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake in 1995 was the principal motivation for these revisions of the code. This presented an opportunity to try to compare the performance of the revised code with those of existing major seismic design codes in the world, i.e., CALTRANS Code, EURO Code 8, NEW ZEALAND Code. Due to the unique seminar format, Volume 1 of the proceedings introduced explanatory notes for the four codes. In addition, the four codes were applied to the comparative designs of bridge piers by 'The Committee on Comparative Design of Bridge Piers'. The outcome of this was remarkable, as shown in this work. Diversities to the designed sections according to the different codes were shown, even though the ground motions, mass of super structures and materials were the same throughout the designed bridge piers. Differences were particularly noted for high piers with large ground acceleration. In the seminar, fundamental reasons for these differences were discussed and numerical evaluations presented. Volume 1 was published prior to the seminar, Volume 2 was published after the seminar concluded. Volume 2 of the seminar proceedings includes the discussion for the contents of Volume 1 and the main elements of the four codes. Therefore, some of the modifications for the trial design of bridge piers in Volume 1, are also included reflecting the discussion at the seminar. Besides these, the contents include the numerical evaluation of designed bridge piers, which conclude the comparison of the performances of four major seismic design codes as a whole. As appendices, the main provisions of the four codes that are used in designing are attached so that the readers of the books will benefit from the convenience of the reference. The overall aim of the International Seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes for Concrete Structures are thus accomplished and we are quite sure that this will help structural engineers who are engaged in seismic design of RC structures to understand the differences of the basic ideas underlying in each of the seismic design code provisions with ease and to make most of those.

Book Urban Goods Movement

Download or read book Urban Goods Movement written by Roy Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freight transport is essential to modern urban civilization. No urban area could exist without a reliable freight transport system. Although the private sector is responsible for much of this system, the public sector has a vital role to play in the provision of infrastructure and the establishment of a social and legal framework within which transport can occur. For these reasons, goods movement deserves and is increasingly receiving, explicit consideration in urban transport policy and planning. Many cities around the world have conducted studies aimed at resolving urban goods movement problems and a considerable, if disparate, body of research results are available. This book brings together much of this knowledge and experience in a comprehensive source of information on urban freight, particularly from a public policy or planning viewpoint. It provides both a conceptual basis for urban goods movement analysis and detailed, practical guidelines which may be used directly by those responsible for urban freight policy and planning. The author has worked for over twenty years in this field and he draws upon his experience in Australia, the United States, Great Britain, Canada and The Philippines to produce a book which is international in scope and perspective. The book is written for practising professionals, such as engineers, economists and planners, working in local government, urban transport planning agencies, highway authorities, consultancies, or research institutes; it is also relevant to graduate courses in transport planning, traffic engineering or urban policy. It is of interest to all who have a concern for contemporary issues in urban development.
