Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rozier's History of the Early Settlement of the Mississippi Valley In 1850 Senator Rozier was a candidate for Congress, his Opponents being John F. Darby and Judge Bowlin, who was then Representative. Although he went out of St. Louis with a handsome majority, he was beaten by Darby by a few votes in the district. At that time he represented the Benton side of the political issues of the day. In 1851 he was elected Mayor of Ste. In 1854 he established at his native town an academy for the education of boys, in which he took a great interest for many years. In 1856 he was elected a member ofthe Legislature and served ably for two years. In 1858 he was elected Pre sident ofthe branch bank of the Merchants' Bank of St. Louis, located at Ste. Genevieve. In 1872 he waselected State Senator, without opposition, and has since been chairman of the Committee on Mines and Mining, a position for which he is admirably qualified by rea son Of his extensive mining operations in St. Francois, Jefferson, and other counties in Southeast Missouri. By his activity and influence he obtained a large amount from the Missouri Legislature, for the prosecution of the State geological survey. To go back a little, in 1845 Senator Rozier was a delegate to the Southwest Convention, at Memphis, of which John C. Calhoun was president, and made a re port, accompanied by a topographical map of the sub merged lands of South Missouri, which was approved by the Convention and attracted much attention. The seconds then cocked their pistols, keeping their eyes on each other and on their principals.-They had thrown up for position, when Pettis had won the choice. Everything being ready, the pistols having been loaded, cocked andprimed, and put into the hands of the principals, the words were pronounced, according to the rule of duelling--" Are you ready?" Both answered, " VVe are." The seconds then counted " one--two--three." After the word was given, both principals fired with outstretched arms. The pistols were twelve to fifteen inches in length and they lapped and struck against each other, as they were discharged. There was scarcely any chance for either to escape instant death. They both fired so simultaneously, that the people on shore heard only one report, and both men fell at the same time." This duel was characterized as one of the most desperate encounters, that had ever occurred in the Great West. Both parties were buried in St. Louis, Missouri. MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE. It was on the 29th day of April, 1825, that the steamboat " Natchez" arrived at the port at St. Louis, with brilliant banners and music, announcing the arrival of the distinguished Marquis de Lafayette, when the whole population, without regard to race, turned out to welcome this honored veteran, of the New and Old Worlds. He was accompanied by his son, and by Mr. M. Levasseur his secretary, and other distinguished persons from New Orleans. Lafayette was honored by a splendid banquet and ball, at the City Hotel. Book From French Community to Missouri Town

Download or read book From French Community to Missouri Town written by Bonnie Stepenoff and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small French settlement thrived for half a century on the west bank of the Mississippi River before the Louisiana Purchase made it part of the United States in 1803. But for the citizens of Ste. Genevieve, becoming Americans involved more than simply acknowledging a transfer of power. Bonnie Stepenoff has written an engaging history of Missouri’s oldest permanent settlement to explore what it meant to be Americanized in our country’s early years. Picking up where other studies of Ste. Genevieve leave off, she traces the dramatic changes wrought by the transfer of sovereignty to show the process of social and economic transformation on a young nation’s new frontier. Stepenoff tells how French and Spanish residents—later joined by German immigrants and American settlers—made necessary compromises to achieve order and community, forging a democracy that represented different approaches to such matters as education, religion, property laws, and women’s rights. By examining the town’s historical circumstances, its legal institutions, and especially its popular customs, she shows how Ste. Genevieve differed from other towns along the Mississippi. Stepenoff has plumbed the town’s voluminous archives to share previously untold stories of Ste. Genevieve citizens that reflect how Americanization affected their lives. In these pages we meet a free woman of color who sued a prominent white family for support of her children; a slave who obtained her own freedom and then purchased her daughters’ freedom; a local sheriff who joined Aaron Burr’s conspiracy; and a doctor who treated cholera victims and later became a U.S. senator. More than colorful characters, these are real people shown pursuing justice and liberty under a new flag. The story of Ste. Genevieve serves as a testament to Tocqueville’s observations on American democracy while also challenging some of the commonly held beliefs about that institution. From French Community to Missouri Town provides a better understanding not only of how democracy works but also of what it meant to become American when America was still young.

Book The Keelboat Age on Western Waters

Download or read book The Keelboat Age on Western Waters written by Leland D. Baldwin and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1941-09-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of river boating in the West before the invention of the steamboat. In a deft combination of thorough research and interesting narrative, Baldwin recreates life on the keelboats and flatboats that plied the Ohio, Mississippi, and other rivers from revolutionary days until about 1820. No one knows who put the first keel along the bottom of one big, clumsy river craft used by the pioneers. but the change made the boats far easier to manage, and travel in both directions became practical all the way to New Orleans.Baldwin examines the many types of craft in use, the different methods of locomotion, and the art of navigation on uncharted rivers full of hidden obstacles. But he never loses sight of the picturesque aspects of his subject, especially the boatmen themselves-a tribe of rugged and fearless men whose colorful lives are described in great detail. The Keelboat Age is a segment cut from the history of the frontier, showing the overwhelming importance of river transportation in the development of the West. The rivers were great arteries, carrying a restless people into a new land. The keelboatman and his craft did much to build a nation.
