Book Local Government in the United Kingdom

Download or read book Local Government in the United Kingdom written by David Wilson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its 13 years of office, Labour's modernization agenda transformed the world of UK local government. Amidst a starkly altered political and economic climate the coalition government formed in 2010 pledged to implement equally radical changes to the system. Taking account of the coalition's programme for government and its first round of spending cuts, the completely revised and updated fifth edition of this popular and established text is timed to take full advantage of this historic juncture. David Wilson and Chris Game provide readers with systematic coverage of the UK's local government. The book examines its defining features, its history, changing structure, operations, functions, financing, and its relations with central government. The fifth edition gives additional emphasis to local government in the devolved regions of the UK, and provides more extensive analysis of centre-local government relations. The authors deliver a thorough critique of Labour's third term in office. Looking ahead, the book anticipates the future of local government under the coalition government. Two themes look likely to dominate policy making: decentralization and cuts to public spending. With its clear, accessible, non-technical style and popular illustrations, Local Government in the United Kingdom will be essential reading for students, practitioners, and anyone with an interest in local politics.

Book Explaining local government

Download or read book Explaining local government written by J. A. Chandler and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explaining local government, available at last in paperback, uniquely presents a history of local government in Britain from 1800 until the present day. The study explains how the institution evolved from a structure that appeared to be relatively free from central government interference to, as John Prescott observes, 'one of the most centralised systems of government in the Western world'. The book is accessible to A level and undergraduate students as an introduction to the development of local government in Britain but also balances values and political practice to provide a unique explanation, using primary research, of the evolution of the system.

Book The Reorganisation of British Local Government

Download or read book The Reorganisation of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Book Local Government in England

Download or read book Local Government in England written by Colin Copus and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the claim that English local government exists in one of the most centralised relationships with national government. Such a position fundamentally undermines any notion of local self-government and makes the term ‘government’ in local government a misnomer. The book will examine how the erosion of the autonomy, powers, roles, functions and responsibilities of English local government came about, the arguments of centralisers and localisers to support their view of the constitutional status of local government, and its overall role in the government of England. The book offers an antidote to the onward march of centralisation by offering a new vision of local government which emphasises both ‘local’ and ‘government’.

Book Foundations of the Planning Enterprise

Download or read book Foundations of the Planning Enterprise written by Patsy Healey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 579 pages. Book excerpt: Planning Theory has a history of common debates about ideas and practices and is rooted in a critical concern for the 'improvement' of human and environmental well-being, particularly as pursued through interventions which seek to shape environmental conditions and place qualities.. The first volume in this three volume series, Foundations of the Planning Enterprise, includes articles and papers which offer a unique general introduction to planning theory. The authors review the subject's development, its recurrent themes, its contemporary preoccupation as rational scientific management and its relations to other fields. The editors supplement the collection with an introductory overview as well as detailed introductions to each part. This will be an essential purchase for planning libraries around the world.

Book Nigeria s Democratic Experience in the Fourth Republic Since 1999

Download or read book Nigeria s Democratic Experience in the Fourth Republic Since 1999 written by A. Sat Obiyan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses various issues that have arisen in the practice of democracy in Nigeria since 1999, focusing on the Obasanjo years (1999-2007). Nigeria's return to democratic rule has been marked by developments such as the implementation of reforms to address perceived economic problems and corruption. The introduction of democracy in the country has also witnessed many challenges, including the difficult relationship between some political chief executives and their deputies; intriguing intergovernmental relations; the rise and resurgence of sub-national groups that pose serious threat to the hegemony of the state; precarious inter-ethnic/inter-sectional relations; attempts to perpetuate the tenure of chief executives through constitutional amendments; and developments in electoral politics and conflicts. The book provides incisive analysis into these issues.
