Book Royal Air Force Pilot s Notes for Lancaster I III X

Download or read book Royal Air Force Pilot s Notes for Lancaster I III X written by Royal Air Force and published by Periscope Film LLC. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed by Avro's Roy Chadwick to replace the Manchester, the Lancaster four-engine bomber became the RAF's main heavy bomber during WWII. The most successful night bomber of WWII, it flew over 150,000 sorties over occupied Europe and delivered over 600,000 long tons of bombs. The "Lanc's" large bomb bay meant that it could carry the largest bombs in RAF inventory including the 12,000 lb "blockbuster" type called the "Tallboy," the "Grand Slam" 22,000 lb bomb, and (after receiving modifications) the "bouncing bombs" for the attack on Germany's Ruhr dams in 1943. The Lancaster carried a crew of seven: pilot, flight engineer, bombardier, radio operator, navigator and two gunners. The all-metal aircraft carried eight machine guns, and had a range of 3,000 miles, a ceiling of 23,500 feet, and a maximum speed of 280 mph. Over 7,300 Lancasters were built from 1941 through 1946. Of this number, 3,249 were lost in action. In addition to service with the R.A.F., Lancs flew for the Canadian and Australian air forces, in the Soviet Union, and after WWII for a variety of air forces worldwide. These pilot's notes were standard issue for R.A.F. pilots and flight engineers circa 1944. They contain information about aircraft operation, controls, handling, and emergencies.

Book excerpt: It is no accident that the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight consists primarily of three aircraft types, the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Lancaster. The Spitfire and Hurricane, of course, are famous for their roles during the Battle of Britain over the skies of southern England in 1940. The Lancaster, on the other hand, did not enter operational service with the RAF until 1942, long after the 'official' Battle of Britain was over. Yet the aircraft has more than earned its place in the Battle of Britain flight. The Lancaster has carved its place in history in its own unique way. During the Spitfire's lifetime, more than 20,000 were built while the Lancaster's total is less than half of that. Yet the Lancaster had a crew of seven, with at least as many again in each Lanc's ground crew. More personnel, therefore, had a close association with the Lanc than with the world's most famous fighter plane.Neither should it be forgotten that, when Britain defended its shores as an island fortress during the darkest days of WW II, the Lancaster and its crews were taking the fight to the enemy, delivering their deadly payloads to targets deep in the heart of Germany. A tangible reminder to everyone suffering in Britain that we were still striking back, still fighting, the Lancaster and its crews won the affection of the British people. Lancasters dropped Barnes Wallis' 'bouncing bombs' on Germany's Ruhr Valley dams to earn 617 Squadron its 'Dam Busters' nickname and Tony Iveson was among those Lanc pilots whose aircraft crossed the North Sea to sink the battleship Tirpitz. In ''Lancaster'', Tony Iveson has created a riveting biography of the aircraft, focussing not just on its operational history, but on the crews who flew and maintained Lancs, even talking to German fighter pilots who flew against them. The stories in ''Lancaster'' run from the time of its initial design right through the war to when variants such as the Lancastrian entered civilian service, BOAC using the aircraft on scheduled services between Britain and Australia from May 1945. A salute to the men and women who built, flew and maintained the Lancaster, this book stands as a tribute to a truly great British icon.

Book Strategy For Defeat The Luftwaffe 1933 1945 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Strategy For Defeat The Luftwaffe 1933 1945 Illustrated Edition written by Williamson Murray and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the Aerial Warfare In Europe During World War II illustrations pack with over 200 maps, plans, and photos. This book is a comprehensive analysis of an air force, the Luftwaffe, in World War II. It follows the Germans from their prewar preparations to their final defeat. There are many disturbing parallels with our current situation. I urge every student of military science to read it carefully. The lessons of the nature of warfare and the application of airpower can provide the guidance to develop our fighting forces and employment concepts to meet the significant challenges we are certain to face in the future.
