Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rough Stone Monuments and Their Builders The exact relation in which it stands to them will be fully discussed in the last chapter. We have now to consider what may be called the architectural methods of the megalithic builders, for although in dealing with such primi tive monuments it would perhaps be exaggeration to speak of a style, yet there were certain princi ples which were as carefully and as invariably observed as were in later days those of the Doric or the Gothic styles in the countries where they took root. Book Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries

Download or read book Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries written by James Fergusson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries: Their Age and Uses When, in the year 1854, I was arranging the scheme for the 'Handbook of Architecture, ' one chapter of about fifty pages was allotted to the Kude Stone Monuments then known. When, however, I came seriously to consult the authorities I had marked out, and to arrange my ideas preparatory to writing it, I found the whole subject in such a state of confusion and uncertainty as to be wholly unsuited for introduction into a work, the main object of which was to give a clear but succinct account of what was known and admitted with regard to the architectural styles of the world. Again, ten years afterwards, while engaged in re-writing this 'Handbook' as a 'History of Architecture, ' the same difficulties presented themselves. It is true that in the interval the Druids, Avith their Dracontia, had lost much of the hold they possessed on the mind of the public; but, to a great extent, they had been replaced by prehistoric myths, which, though free from their absurdity, were hardly less perplexing. The consequence was that then, as in the first instance, it would have been necessary to argue every point and defend every position. Nothing could be taken for granted, and no narrative was possible. The matter was, therefore, a second time allowed quietly to drop without being noticed. Book Great Stone Circles

Download or read book Great Stone Circles written by Aubrey Burl and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologist Aubrey Burl, for more than thirty years a specialist in the study of stone circles, selects a dozen attractive and evocative rings for close examination. Each of the twelve sites illuminates a particular archaeological question - the purpose of stone circles, their construction, age, distribution, design, art, legend and relation to astronomy. Burl asks, and offers sometimes surprising answers to questions about Stonehenge: how were its bluestones transported from south-west Wales, why was its Slaughter Stone not used for sacrifice, and why is Stonehenge - the most British of stone circles - not a stone circle and not British? To conclude his account of the strange subtleties of stone circles, Burl reconstructs the social history of Swinside in the Lake District, describing the builders, their way of life, and the ceremonies they performed inside their lovely ring.
