It reveals the origins of Spanish as a language binding residents of the Southwest to the politics and culture of an expanding nation in the 1840s. As the West increasingly integrated into the United States over the following century, struggles over power, identity, and citizenship transformed the place of the Spanish language in the nation. An American Language is a history that reimagines what it means to be an American—with profound implications for our own time.

Book Rosina the Midwife

Download or read book Rosina the Midwife written by Jessica Kluthe and published by Brindle and Glass. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for a 2014 Alberta Literary Award Between 1870 and 1970, 26 million Italians left their homeland and travelled to places like Canada, Australia and the United States, in search of work. Many of them never returned to Italy. Against this historic backdrop comes the story of Rosina, a Calabrian matriarch, who worked as a midwife in an area where only one doctor served three villages. She was also the only member of the Russo family to remain in Italy after the mass migration of the 1950s. Written by Rosina’s great-great- granddaughter, Rosina, the Midwife is a charming memoir that is at once a Canadian story and an Italian one. Through Kluthe’s meticulous research and great insight, we see her great-grandfather Generoso labouring through the harsh Edmonton winter in order to buy passage to Canada for his wife and children; we glimpse her grandmother Rose huddled in a third-class cabin, sick from the motion of the boat; and we watch, teary-eyed, as her great-great-grandmother Rosina is forced to say goodbye, one by one, to the people she loves.

Book The Criminalisation of Irregular Migration in Europe

Download or read book The Criminalisation of Irregular Migration in Europe written by Matilde Rosina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the criminalisation of irregular migration in Europe. In particular, it investigates the meaning, purpose, and consequences of criminalising unauthorised entry and stay. From a theoretical perspective, the book adds to the debate on the persistence of irregular migration, despite governments’ attempts at deterring it, by taking an interdisciplinary approach that draws from international political economy and criminology. Using Italy and France as case studies, and relying on previously unreleased data and interviews, it argues that criminalisation has no effect on migratory flows, and that this is due to factors including the latter’s structural determinants and the likely creation of substitution effects. Furthermore, criminalisation is found to lead to adverse consequences, including by contributing to vicious cycles of irregularity and insecurity.

Book Grandmother s Secrets

Download or read book Grandmother s Secrets written by Rosina-Fawzia al-Rawi and published by Interlink Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Come, sit by me," says Grandmother. "Take this chalk in your hand. Now draw a dot and concentrate all your energy into this one dot. It is the beginning and the end, the navel of the world." So Fawzia Al-Rawi describes her grandmother's first lesson about the ancient craft of Oriental dance. Grandmother's Secretsalways circles back to this grandmother and this young girl, echoing the circular movements of the dance itself. Al-Rawi has written a strikingly graceful and original book that blends personal memoir with the history and theory of the dance known in the West as "belly dancing." It is the story of a young Arab girl as she is initiated into womanhood. It is a history of the dance from the earliest times through the days of the Pharaohs, the Roman Empire, to the Arab world of the last three centuries. It is a personal investigation into the effects of the dance's movements on individual parts of the body and the whole psyche. It is a guide to the actual techniques of the dance for those who are inspired to put down the book and move. Al-Rawi conveys in this book not only the history and technique of grieving and mourning dances, pregnancy and birth dances, but the spirit of these age-old rituals, and their possibilities for healing and empowering women today.

Book excerpt: Women who want to advance their careers know they must develop a network. Yet for most women, especially those at mid-career level, building a network is an arduous task that ends up low on the priority list. Women at this level are prone to hunker down, work hard, and expect their work to speak for itself. They assume that excellent work will be rewarded with advancement. They also assume that getting ahead by "playing the game" will compromise their integrity. In this ground-breaking book, Dr. Rosina Racioppi, President and CEO of WOMEN Unlimited, Inc., explains why these assumptions are dead wrong.
