Book Radical Ideology in the Russian Revolution

Download or read book Radical Ideology in the Russian Revolution written by Anton Petrov and published by Anton Petrov. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever huge events like wars and revolutions occur it often seems, in retrospect, that the preceding events have been inevitably leading to the final result and no possible others. This is generally not the case, however, and it certainly is not the case in Russia during the Revolutions of 1917. The events preceding this certainly helped the outcome, but they did not prescribe it, preventing another outcome. End results are often just the final product of a series of unrelated, oft-times contradictory, events. It is only in retrospect that the preceding events fall together and then only with the help of twenty-twenty hindsight and omission.

Book Nineteenth Century Russia

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Russia written by Derek Offord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Seminar Study provides students with a rewarding introduction to nineteenth-century Russia. This period of Russian history is, of course, characterised by the flowering of an enormously rich intellectual and cultural life, the origins of which lie in the intelligentsia¿s opposition to autocratic rule. Here, Professor Offord introduces the reader to the period while focusing particularly on the rise of radicalism. The book opens with two scene-setting chapters: one looking at the political and social structure peculiar to Russia, and the second looking at the cultural and intellectual background. Then, within a chronological framework, the author examines all the great 'events' in the history of Russian radicalism - from the Decembrist Revolt in 1825, to the 'going to the people' in 1874, and the assassination of Alexander II in 1881. However, throughout the text sustained attention is given to the intellectual dimension of nineteenth-century Russian history. Professor Offord examines all the major schools of thought and looks in detail at all the great thinkers of the day, including Chaadaev, Belinsky, Herzen, Chernyshevsky, Bakunin and Tolstoy. This new book will provide essential reading for anyone studying nineteenth-century Russia. Lucid, accessible and immensely readable, it is a formidable achievement.

Download or read book The Populist Century written by Pierre Rosanvallon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Populism is an expression of anger; its appeal stems from being presented as the solution to disorder in our times. The vision of democracy, society, and the economy it offers is coherent and attractive. At a time when the words and slogans of the left have lost much of their power to inspire, Pierre Rosanvallon takes populism for what it is: the rising ideology of the twenty-first century. In The Populist Century he develops a rigorous theoretical account of populism, distinguishing five key features that make up populist political culture; he retraces its history in modern democracies from the mid-nineteenth century to the present; and he offers a well-reasoned critique of populism, outlining a robust democratic alternative. This wide-ranging and insightful account of the theory and practice of populism will be of great interest to students and scholars in politics and the social sciences and to anyone concerned with the key political questions of our time.
