Download or read book The Root The Marines In Beirut written by Eric Hammel and published by Daniel Hammel. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ROOT The Marines in Beirut August 1982–February 1984 Eric Hammel Facing northward out of a second-deck window, the lance corporal was hurled through the window and out into mid- air. He fell thirty feet to the ground and landed on his feet. He was not harmed until falling debris struck him on the head and shoulders. Nearly every other member of the recon platoon in his compartment was killed in the inferno. At 6:22 A.M. on October 23, 1983, a yellow Mercedes truck raced across the parking lot of the Beirut International Airport in Lebanon. Crashing through a chain-link gate into the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit’s headquarters compound, it raced on careening through a shack and into the open atrium lobby of a terminal building in which hundreds of American servicemen were housed, many still asleep. The truck lurched to a stop. Seconds later, 12,000 pounds of high explosives piled in the bed of the truck exploded. The four-story steel-and-concrete building shuddered, then collapsed. Two hundred forty-one Americans were killed and many more were injured in the disaster. Soon after the 24th MAU returned to the United States in November 1983, the Marine Corps granted Eric Hammel an unprecedented opportunity to interview survivors of the bombing and those who came to their rescue. The Root is the result of these interviews. It is a narrative account of the Marines’ mission in Lebanon, describing their escalating involvement in the largely unreported battles fought in and around the shattered city of Beirut. And it presents in detail the terrorist attack on the unit headquarters. The focus of The Root is on the nearly 200 people interviewed by the author—enlisted men and officers—for whom the shock and horror at the bombing were still fresh. Their reactions to the danger, what they survived and how they survived it, their concerns and insights, make The Root a timeless chronicle of the human spirit—and as timely as today’s headlines. Praise for The Root “Illustrates Washington’s exceptional resistance to accepting the facts that contradict its preconceived views. . . . It’s time that we learn from our mistakes and never again put our people in situations we do not understand. A first step is to read how our effort in Beirut turned from a noble cause into having our troops pinned down in an escalating civil war we did not understand.” —Colonel Thomas X Hammes, USMC (Ret.), author of The Sling and the Stone It’s a fine book . . . a fascinating record of the life of a military unit . . . “ —New York Times “Hammel has grippingly reconstructed a story that was often obscured as it unfolded.” —Los Angeles Times “Hammel’s detailed account of individual rescue efforts is intensely graphic. . . . It is first-hand and realistic. It is not sensationalized or trivialized.” —New York Tribune “Eric Hammel’s well-written book . . . strikes a deep emotional chord . . .” —Naval Institute Proceedings “(The Root is) a book about the violence of combat, a first-hand account of death and danger, fear, pain and survival. . . . ” —Baltimore Sun “A disturbingly accurate portrait…well-researched (and) well-crafted. . . .” —Kirkus Reviews “This is a moving book which tells a story that needs to be told.” —San Diego Union

Download or read book YEAR OF ENLISTMENT THE MUSICAL written by Jeanne Gossett Halsey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The scenario is a year in the lives of four New Soldiers in the Army of God. It is a metaphor for Christian life today." The analogy that Christians are supposed to be warriors for the Kingdom of God is not new. I do not believe our local churches are supposed to be luxurious day-camps for pampering self-indulgent babies; rather, I believe new believers should hit the ground running, learning about spiritual warfare from the outset ... and even with our own mistakes, hurts, frequent breakdowns, we are destined to win others who are caught in the darkness of sin and point them to the light and salvation offered by Jesus Christ. The "militant church" is a favorite theme of mine.

Download or read book Training for Model Citizenship written by Molly Sundberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the state in post-genocide Rwanda through an ethnography of a state-run civic education program and everyday forms of government. In 2007, the Rwandan government introduced a nationwide civic education program, called Itorero, to teach all inhabitants about its vision of the model Rwandan citizen. Since then, this ideal has been pursued through remote training camps, village assemblies, and daily government practices. Based on ethnographic research of the life and workings of Itorero camps and the day-to-day administration of a local neighborhood in Kigali, this book investigates how such a pursuit has come to affect Rwandans’ relation to the state and what it may tell us about modern forms of authoritarian rule.
Download or read book Roots in the Garden of Neglect written by Marti Shoemaker and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where we come from matters. How we are raised and what we have lived through defines aspects of attitudes and character, maybe as far reaching as goals and ambitions. But what of those with a troubled past or a troubled present? To the one who overcomes, it is strength. To another, it is their weakest link. Every day, we choose what defines us. But we don't get to choose all that comes to us! Mary lived knowing where her roots went and kept that to herself. She was so secretive that even her own daughter could not guess the trouble she went through, or the remedy, or the scars. It would take a lifetime to figure her out and understand that there are some roots that are meant to be pulled, and others need to stay in deep dark places where only God can go and change what comes of it. One thing would certainly remain, the family tree shares the family roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible clearly tells us that the end of time is near. The devil is constantly assaulting God's people with devastating forms of spiritual warfare. This war is being waged world wide. The battlefield is in the heart of every believer and the souls of mankind are the prize. We, as Christians, must not fear and give up. God is on our side and we will win. We are instructed to put on the whole armor of God. But what are our weapons? How do we learn to use them? How do we fight an unseen enemy? What does God expect of us? Can we really be victorious? The purpose of this book is to show how God's Word answers these questions. It is my desire that you fully comprehend what God has given to me, so - "I've tried to write it, so that you can understand it." In 1970, while a senior at the University of Georgia, Danny Callahan, received his calling into the ministry. God's words were crystal clear that day, as He shared His will for Danny's life. Then the Lord ended His instructions with these words, "I want you to say it so that they can understand." After graduation Danny entered the job market and pursued his own dreams. But "the calling" haunted him day and night. After struggling for two years, he surrendered his will to God, and his life has never been the same. He started his first youth group in 1973 and served as a youth minister for the next twenty years. In August of 1993 he accepted the pastorate of Kettle Creek Church, in Waycross, Georgia. He has faithfully ministered there for the past fifteen years and continues to humbly serve as their Shepherd.

I am not sure just how many of the readers will receive my reference to scripture as I will often refer to but I want to start with a quote: “give honor to where honor is due; and tribute tow where tribute is due.” These one hundred and one women stories and lives have certainly influenced me, guided me, taught me and help to prepare me to live and have a wholesome and wealthy life whereby it is has contributed to my entire wellness. Wholeness, wealth and wellness come in a variety of ways; however, often times they are not easily recognized because they are not in a materialistic appearance which can be touched or perceived. It is now my esteemed pleasure to introduce you to the women of honor who contributed too much to me.
