Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of seven children provides the focus for this penetrating look into the experiences that shape personality. As they emerge from the records collected over a twenty-year period by the University of Toronto's Institute of Child Study, they reveal the problems and frustrations met with in the process of growing up and point to the strong influences which family relationships have on mental and emotional development. The records themselves, drawn from interviews and questionnaires administered to mothers and children are unusual in their extensiveness. Covering the important years from nursery school through adolescence, they give unusual opportunity for a significant long-term study of the personality changes in individual children. Room to Grow is a source of insight into the needs of children and the problems of parents. As such it is an important book for parents seeking to establish a just balance between domination and permissiveness in their relations with their children. In addition, in its handling of the heterogeneous data resulting from longitudinal psychological research, the book will serve as a model of method and achievement for those who wish to build on the foundation its author has laid.

Book excerpt: Wise, encouraging pastoral reflections on growing in Christ "When I clothe myself with Jesus, he leaves me room to grow — which is a good thing because, God knows, I'm still growing. I put on Jesus as I would a new and ill-fitting outfit — in order that someday it might fit and be a fitting expression of who I have become." — from Martin Copenhaver's preface In this volume of rich pastoral meditations, Martin Copenhaver offers rare insight into the myriad ways we try to live the Christian life, showing us that there is indeed "room to grow" in Christ and into the Christian faith. Moving seamlessly from the gently humorous to the thoughtfully serious, these reflections will renew and inspire Christians in their daily walk.

Book Twelve Rooms with a View

Download or read book Twelve Rooms with a View written by Theresa Rebeck and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would it feel to go overnight from living in a trailer park to a twelve-room apartment overlooking Central Park in a landmark Victorian building? This is what happens to housecleaner Tina Finn, who, with her sisters, Alison and Lucy, suddenly comes into possession of the Livingston Mansion Apartment at the Edgewood. The Finn sisters inherit the $11 million property from their estranged alcoholic mother, but they aren’t the only siblings vying for it. Their mother’s wealthy second husband, Bill—who died just three weeks before Tina’s mother—has two sons. And they are furious at the thought of losing the apartment that’s been in their family for generations. Tina moves into the nearly vacant, palatial space to solidify her claim to it, but she soon discovers that Bill’s sons aren’t the only ones who want her out. The building’s other residents are none too pleased by her presence either. In fact, the co-op board has designs on wresting control of the apartment from both sets of children. As Tina fends off all the people who want to evict her (or worse), she starts to get involved in her neighbors’ complex lives. There’s the mercurial, eccentric botanist who may be either a friend or an enemy; the self-absorbed, randy son of the co-op board president, whose friendship without benefits Tina tries to curry; the large, chaotic family whose depressed teenage daughter becomes Tina’s ally and spy; the ghost Tina hears crying at night in her apartment’s secret room . . . In this entertaining yarn by acclaimed playwright, screenwriter, and author Theresa Rebeck, we follow Tina Finn—a woman both comical and compelling, well intentioned and a bit of a thief—as she begins to love her new home, discovers traits to admire in people she’s only just met, and realizes, finally, her place in her family and the world.

Book excerpt: Tamera Rehnborg learned about Gods grace the hard way. For years she lived in hard, barren places. Eventually her world spiraled down to a small chamber. She lost her voice, her identity, and her vision. In 2007, a life change forced her to call out to God to make room for her. Growing Room is the chronicling of her move out of those tight places. Slowly and incrementally, God used commonplace life experiences to introduce her to his tenacious gracea grace she had never known. He taught her to seek and to find him in the most obscure and ordinary of places. God revealed himself through the tight places of biblical personages such as Hagar, Gomer, Jacob, Peter, and Mary, but most often he engaged Tamera through her daily routine of living. Through these experiences, she learned to abide in the parameters of his grace. Growing Room is the story of Gods unfolding revelation in every situationholy to the profane, humorous to the serious, and the mundane to the extraordinaryfor us to know him. Tamera wants others who are in tight places to know that the relentless love of God will make room for them to grow into his wholeness and perfection. His beautiful, fierce grace will provide the growing room we need to stretch out into his spacious place.

The writers share their experiences as parents of children between the ages of two and ten-the period when our children are young and wholly dependent, before they have established separate identities. Each of these entertaining and evocative essays focuses on one central issue about raising young children: the complexities of being a stay-at-home dad the urge to avoid making the same mistakes our parents did birth order and sibling rivalry giving our children a sense of racial identity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Room and Window Gardening is a practical and comprehensive guide for all those who garden indoors and in small spaces. This Vintage Words of Wisdom title was originally published in 1937 but it remains remarkably relevant today as living spaces become smaller and more crowded, and outside space is a luxury that many cannot afford or do not have the time to tend. The author imparts his wide knowledge and experience on the plants that are most suitable for growing indoors and the care that they need. The book also covers window sill gardening with advice on building and stocking window boxes, information on container gardening for small front and back yards and patios, guidance on propagation and how to buy the plants you need, as well as a month-by-month guide to plant selection and care throughout the year. He also covers things like window cases and Wardian cases, which are experiencing something of a revival in the twenty-first century after being seen as old-fashioned for a long time.Overall, the author's enthusiasm for and delight in plants shines through in this helpful guide. The book is illustrated with contemporary photographs, which provide a charming and nostalgic picture of the impressive flower displays achieved by people determined to beautify their surroundings in whatever space they had available. Ideal for the urban gardener, Room and Window Gardening is full of gardening tips for the keen amateur, those looking to use plants as part of a vintage interior design and for anyone who loves pot plants, window boxes and container gardening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homol'ovi II is a fourteenth-century, ancestral Hopi pueblo with over 700 rooms. Although known by archaeologists since 1896, no systematic excavations were conducted at the pueblo until 1984. This report summarizes the findings of the excavations by the Arizona State Museum of five rooms and an outside activity area, which now form the core of the interpretive program for Homolovi Ruins State Park. The significant findings reported here are that the excavated deposits date between A.D. 1340 and 1400; that nearly all the decorated ceramics during this period were imported from villages on the Hopi Mesas; that cotton was a principal crop which probably formed the basis of Homol'ovi II's participation in regional exchange; that chipped stone was a totally expedient technology in contrast to ground stone which was becoming more diverse; and that the katsina cult was probably present or developing at Homol'ovi II. These findings from the basis for future excavations that should broaden our knowledge of the developments taking place in fourteenth-century Pueblo society connecting the people whom archaeologists term the Anasazi with those calling themselves Hopi.
