Book The Roman Era in Britain

Download or read book The Roman Era in Britain written by John Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Era in Britain Several years ago, I was desired by the Editor of this series to write a volume on Roman Britain, but I soon found that the subject was too large and complex to be treated comprehensively, and at the same time to place the reader en rapport with the results of the systematic excavations of the last twenty-five years. These have vastly increased our knowledge of Roman Britain, especially its "major monuments" - the towns, forts, public buildings, and houses - and to these I confined myself in Romano-British Buildings and Earthworks, of this series. It was felt, however, that the series demanded a general work on the era in Britain. This was now feasible, as the subjects which came within the restricted purview of the above volume could be treated in a more condensed manner than would be otherwise desirable. In spite of this, however, the question of space has been a difficulty. Two chapters which could best be spared - a short history of the era, and practical hints upon archaeological exploration - had to be cut out; and a third upon our public Romano-British collections, which was contemplated at the outset, and for which much material was collected, had to be abandoned. In obtaining this material I am indebted to the hearty co-operation of many museum curators, and although the proposed chapter had to be given up, their labour has by no means been in vain in the production of this volume. Book The Roman House in Britain

Download or read book The Roman House in Britain written by Dominic Perring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have tended to seek explanations for the peculiarities of Romano-British architecture in local tradition, but this book shows how Britain embraced and elaborated Hellenistic ideas and spatial forms. Roman houses were built to sustain power, and Roman architecture gained currency in Britain because of its relevance to new political structures erected in the wake of conquest.

Book Architecture Economics and Identity in Romano British small Towns

Download or read book Architecture Economics and Identity in Romano British small Towns written by Thomas C. Rust and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman 'small towns' were an important link between the urban civitas capitals and the rural population and offer an ideal case study for examining the extent of Roman influence permeating into the rural provinces. Thomas Rust's study looks at 67 Romano-British sites, including Alcester, Bath, Cambridge, Dragonby, Ilchester, Richborough, Rochester and Whitchurch, exploring the extent to which they adopted and adapted to Roman cultural influences. In particular, Rust traces this 'Romanisation' through changes in building traditions, especially the shift from timber to masonry from the mid-2nd to early 3rd century. The study includes a gazetteer of sites, and lots of useful tables and illustrations.

Book The Taberna Structures of Roman Britain

Download or read book The Taberna Structures of Roman Britain written by Ardle MacMahon and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand public buildings and opulent villas more often than not steal the limelight from more mundane structures such as shops and workshops which, nevertheless, played a vital role in catering for the needs of Roman Britain. This thesis assesses evidence from major sites across the country to present a systematic study of the range of tabernae that have been discovered whilst discussing their significance for our understanding of local urban economies as well as the wider Romano-British economy. Drawing on archaeological evidence from sites in Verulamium, Cirencester, Wroxeter, London, Caerwent, Vindolanda and elsewhere and, making comparisons with the well-preserved structures of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Rome and Ostia, MacMahon examines the construction of tabernae, their plan, counters, and doorways as well as covered walkways, methods of selling and display, the economics of tabernae and their location across Britain.
