Book The Oxford Handbook of Roman Sculpture

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Roman Sculpture written by Elise A Friedland and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Roman sculpture has been an essential part of the disciplines of Art History and Classics since the eighteenth century. Famous works like the Laoco?n, the Arch of Titus, and the colossal portrait of Constantine are familiar to millions. Again and again, scholars have returned to sculpture to answer questions about Roman art, society, and history. Indeed, the field of Roman sculptural studies encompasses not only the full chronological range of the Roman world but also its expansive geography, and a variety of artistic media, formats, sizes, and functions. Exciting new theories, methods, and approaches have transformed the specialized literature on the subject in recent decades. Rather than creating another chronological catalogue of representative examples from various periods, genres, and settings, The Oxford Handbook of Roman Sculpture synthesizes current best practices for studying this central medium of Roman art, situating it within the larger fields of Art History, Classical Archaeology, and Roman Studies. This comprehensive volume fills the gap between introductory textbooks and highly focused professional literature. The Oxford Handbook of Roman Sculpture conveniently presents new technical, scientific, literary, and theoretical approaches to the study of Roman sculpture in one reference volume while simultaneously complementing textbooks and other publications that present well-known works in the corpus. The contributors to this volume address metropolitan and provincial material from the early republican period through late antiquity in an engaging and fresh style. Authoritative, innovative, and up-to-date, The Oxford Handbook of Roman Sculpture will remain an invaluable resource for years to come.

Book Un Roman Sex

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-04-23
  • ISBN : 1351980432
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Un Roman Sex written by Tatiana Ivleva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Un-Roman Sex explores how gender and sex were perceived and represented outside the Mediterranean core of the Roman Empire. The volume critically explores the gender constructs and sexual behaviours in the provinces and frontiers in light of recent studies of Roman erotic experience and flux gender identities. At its core, it challenges the unproblematised extension of the traditional Romano-Hellenistic model to the provinces and frontiers. Did sexual relations and gender identities undergo processes of "provincialisation" or "barbarisation" similar to other well-known aspects of cultural negotiation and syncretism in provincial and border regions, for example in art and religion? The 11 chapters that make up the volume explore these issues from a variety of angles, providing a balanced and rounded view through use of literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence. Accordingly, the contributions represent new and emerging ideas on the subject of sex, gender, and sexuality in the Roman provinces. As such, Un-Roman Sex will be of interest to higher-level undergraduates and graduates/academics studying the Roman empire, gender, and sexuality in the ancient world and at the Roman frontiers.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume of essays in his honour gives a good overview of the fields in which Prof. Van Doorselaer has been active throughout his academic career. This book is especially an Album Amicorum, filled with reminiscences and intentions to continue the work. The voluminous size of this book may be considered as an adequate measure of the overall sympathy for Prof. Van Doorselaer. We hope that this publication may encourage him to remain active in the field of archaeology, and that the co-operation among colleagues, stimulated by this project, may be continued in the future.

  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Roman Carmarthen written by Heather James and published by Roman Society Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman town of Moridunum, on the site of modern-day Carmarthen, lay at the very edges of Roman Wales and little is known about it. This report presents the evidence from a series of excavations around the town, including Spilman Street, Priory Street, Church Street and the Parade, in order to answer questions about the Roman presence in the town, particularly the puzzle of why no evidence of a vicus has been discovered despite the existence of a fort. The report, which focuses on each site in turn, also includes a discussion of the establishment of Moridunum and its trading links with other centres, an analysis of the phases of the fort and illustrated specialist reports on the finds and environmental remains.

Book Colchester Fortress of the War God

Download or read book Colchester Fortress of the War God written by David Radford and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a critical assessment of the current state of archaeological knowledge of the settlement originally called Camulodunon and now known as Colchester. The town has been the subject of antiquarian interest since the late 16th century and the first modern archaeological excavations occurred in 1845 close to Colchester Castle, the towns most prominent historic site. The earliest significant human occupation recorded from Colchester dates to the late Neolithic, but it was only towards the end of the 1st century BC that an oppidum was established in the area. This was superseded initially by a Roman legionary fortress and then the colonia of Camulodunum on a hilltop bounded on the north and east by the river Colne. There is little evidence for continuing occupation here in the early post-Roman period, but in 917 the town was re-established as a burgh and gradually grew in importance. After the Norman Conquest, a castle was built on the foundations of the ruined Roman Temple of Claudius, and a priory and an abbey were established just to the south of the walled town. Although the town, as elsewhere, was affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the English Civil War it remained essentially medieval in character until the 18th century. During the 19th century this process of change was accelerated by the arrival of the railway, industrialisation and the establishment of the military garrison. Since the 1960s Colchester has been subject to recurring phases of re-development, the most recent having ended only in 2007, which have had a significant impact on the historic environment. Fortunately the town is one of the best studied in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Caerleon is now a subsidiary town of Newport, Isca , as it was then known, was the permanent base of the Second Augustan Legion for over 200 years. This substantial volume concentrates on the area around Mill Street which originally was thought to lie outside the area of Roman activity. However, the excavators located a network of roads onto which fronted 22 buildings. The archaeological remains and the enormous number of artefacts are described in detail and illustrated with numerous photographs, plans and figures. Evans explores the relationship between the Roman fortress and this civilian settlement and adds a new perspective to our view of the Roman community.
