This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholicism Scripturally Considered Long and obstinate has been the controversy; and everything, it would seem, has been said that could be said; and most ably and fully have Protestants shown and vindicated the truth of God. But every age, every generation, has some peculiarities, which, With new evolutions and assaults of the foe, make it necessary to buckle on agam the ai'mor of God, and fight for the faith once delivered to the saints. This is especially so at the present time: Rome is marshalin'g her hosts and sending out her legions'to overrun and subjugate this fair heritage of ours. She is bold, defiant, and sanguine of success. She must be met With a spirit of unshrinking fidelity to God and his truth; her true character as Antichrist portrayed, and her intolerant, persecuting, tyrannical spirit exhibited to the patriots and Christians of this land. This the Author has essayed to do in the following pages. How far he has succeeded an intelligent community must judge. He trusts, however, that, to some extent, at least, he has filled the desideratum Which just now is felt - has met, partially though it be, the present demands of the Church and the Age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Catholics: Confirmed by Scripture, and Attested by the Fathers of the Five First Centureis of the Church It may be, that I have occasionally erred in the translation of some passages, not always very in telligible; but should any such errors be discovered, I trust, it will not be in any point of moment. On some occasions, the original of certain clauses is given. It was my wish to be literal and plain. As order and precision are necessary for the attain ment of accurate knowledge, I thought it necessary, in quoting the Fathers, to preserve the chrono logical series of their lives; so that each authority should take its proper place. I, therefore, marked each century, and quoted the fathers, who belonged to it, in the order in which they lived. This is repeated under caph Proposition. To each name are, likewise, added the letters L. C. Or G. C. De noting whether they belonged to the Latin or the Greek church; and when any Father is, the first time, introduced, I state in a Note, who he was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Faith, or Doctrines of the Church of Rome Contrary to Scripture and the Teaching of the Primitive Church My object in making this quotation and in the foregoing history, is simply to show my connection with the work and how I became so deeply interested in its publication. That the original plan may be fully carried out, and the faithful and devoted layman of the Church, who is the author, be in some degree rewarded for his life-long labor and study in that department of learning. Is my most earnest prayer nor have I any doubt that the catholic faith will eventually become as much a standard work as any that can be named for the use of theological students and for the clergy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truths of the Catholic Religion, Vol. 2: Proved From Scripture Alone, in a Series of Popular Discourses Chiefly Addressed to Non-Catholics The Doctrine of the Catholic Church, regarding the veneration of relics, is thus denned by the Fathers of the Council of Trent. The Holy Synod decrees: "That the bodies of holy martyrs and of others now living with Christ, which were the members of Christ and the temples of the Holy Spirit, and which shall be raised by him to eternal life and be glorified, are to be venerated by the faithful. Through them many benefits are bestowed on men by God; so that they who affirm that no veneration and honour are due to the relics of Saints, or that to honour them and other sacred monuments is useless, as likewise to celebrate the memories of Saints in order to obtain their aid, are absolutely to be condemned, as the Church has condemned and does condemn them." - Sess. xxv. de Invocat. SS. In these relics we Catholics do not imagine any inherent power, any supernatural and divine efficacy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truths of the Catholic Religion Proved From Scripture Alone, Vol. 1: In a Series of Popular Discourses Chiefly Addressed to Non-Catholics In presuming to publish a Second Edition of these Scriptural Lectures, I beg to inform my Catholic and Protestant friends, that I have not merely confined myself to the amendments of the first, but, under advice, I have incorporated the notes of the former Edition in the text of the present; submitted the Scriptural proofs that so fully substantiate the "Trinity of Persons, and the Divinity of Jesus Christ;" and, independently of many material additions to the body of the Work, annexed a Lecture on the "Veneration paid by the Catholic Church to the Blessed Virgin Mary," (the substance of a Discourse delivered in the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Bermondsey, Sunday Evening, Jan. 5, 1840, ) and another on the Supremacy of the Pope. Thus I indulge a fond hope, that if the First Edition, divested of the present improvements, was favourably received, the present will not be less acceptable. He would assure him, that the question stood precisely as he viewed it; and for the satisfaction which he wished, he would refer him to many books written on the subject, and particularly to the works of those venerable men, to whom he had alluded, the Fathers of the Church; acknowledged to have been the fruitful witnesses of the doctrines, which they had received, and themselves delivered. But the works of these Fathers were chie y written in Greek or Latin, the language of the countries in which they lived; languages not accessible to all readers; and of those works few have been translated.
