Book excerpt: Important new evidence of Londons 2nd-century AD Roman pottery industry has been found along the western side of a tributary of the Walbrook stream. Up to eight kilns, producing Verulamium region white ware, and a probable potters workshop represent two phases of production. The findings indicate that much of the pottery thought to have been produced outside the settlement may come from these kilns. Pottery production went into decline in the second half of the 2nd century AD, though residual evidence was found of nearby glass working and other industries. Later Roman and medieval activity was largely truncated by modern basements.

Book excerpt: Two 1998 excavations provide important new evidence of Roman and later development on the terraced ground north of the Thames and south of Cornhill. The Monument House site lay just north-east of the Roman bridgehead, immediately behind river quays and warehouses. First-century landscaping and gravel quarries were followed by timber buildings. Early 3rd-century redevelopment included a substantial masonry building and a subterranean drainage culvert which carried dirty water south from Cornhill to the Thames. It remained in use until the mid 4th century AD and has been preserved in situ beneath the new development. At 13-21 Eastcheap early buildings were sealed by Hadrianic fire debris. Rebuilding included timber drains and fragmentary masonry buildings. Later reoccupation at Monument House included a 10th-century AD sunken-floored building and medieval properties. A large 15th-century tenement east of Botolph Lane and north of Cat Lane was remodelled before destruction in the Great Fire. The finds assemblage includes rare ironwork, an ornate fireplace and decorated tiles. At 13-21 Eastcheap isolated medieval pits contained animal bone possibly related to Eastcheap's role as a centre of butchery.

Book excerpt: This study brings to light new evidence for the Claudian waterfront and construction of the terracing along the natural slope of the riverbank. Post-Boudican and Hadrianic developments included the construction of two, more solid, timber quays built in c A.D. 70-80/3 and subsequently in c A.D. 120 as tidal regression generally hastened the decline of the port. The remains of major buildings include a possible early bathhouse as well as 1st- to mid 3rd-century A.D. high-status buildings with hypocausts, paved floors, mosaics and painted wall plaster. One of these may be part of a building previously recorded at the adjacent site of Suffolk House, where it was interpreted as a goldsmith's premises. Other buildings at Arthur Street are interpreted as high-status residential complexes or townhouses. Alongside the buildings was a large well containing the remarkably well-preserved elements of an elaborate rotary water-lifting device consisting of the wooden buckets and Iron linking chain.

The site was used as a timber yard and then developed as a commercial wharf, with new waterfronts constructed in deeper water. In the second half of the 18th century the Woolcombe family of shipbuilders developed a new river frontage and a wet dock. In the early 19th century the Beatson family adapted the site as a ship-breakers' yard and built a fashionable dwelling house overlooking the wet dock and a warehouse. The findings at Pacific Wharf provide important insights into post-medieval woodworking techniques, and other key aspects of ship-building technology. Book excerpt: Excavations at 9 Albert Embankment in the London Borough of Lambeth uncovered important new evidence for one of the lesser-known 'pothouses' of the Doulton company. This small pottery factory operated from the 1870s to 1926 and its main products were stoneware bottles, essentially the containers for products such as ginger beer and ink. While these types of stoneware vessel are a common find on archaeological sites, their actual manufacturing process has rarely been studied. The remains of five 'downdraught' pottery kilns were recorded in the MoLAS excavations of 2001-2. Two of the kilns formed part of the first pothouse of the 1870s, and there were three more kilns from the enlarged pothouse of the 1890s. At their demolition, the kilns were backfilled with a mixture of whole pots, kiln furniture and refractory bricks: it is this significant body of material that has enabled a study of both the products and the manufacturing process. The book sets the pottery in its historical context, and explores the links between Henry Doulton, the proprietor, and other Victorian businessmen. The publication shows how Doulton exploited Lambeth in pursuit of the mass market.
