Download or read book La tz aw ch written by R. McKenna Brown and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kaqchikel is one of approximately thirty Mayan languages spoken in Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, and, increasingly, the United States. Of the twenty-two Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala, Kaqchikel is one of the four "mayoritarios," those with the largest number of speakers. About half a million people living in the central highlands between Guatemala City and Lake Atitlán speak Kaqchikel. And because native Kaqchikel speakers are prominent in the field of Mayan linguistics, as well as in Mayan cultural activism generally, Kaqchikel has been adopted as a Mayan lingua franca in some circles. This innovative language-learning guide is designed to help students, scholars, and professionals in many fields who work with Kaqchikel speakers, in both Guatemala and the United States, quickly develop basic communication skills. The book will familiarize learners with the words, phrases, and structures used in daily communications, presented in as natural a way as possible, and in a logical sequence. Six chapters introduce the language in context (greetings, the classroom, people, the family, food, and life) followed by exercises and short essays on aspects of Kaqchikel life. A grammar summary provides in-depth linguistic analysis of Kaqchikel, and a glossary supports vocabulary learning from both Kaqchikel to English and English to Kaqchikel. These resources, along with sound files and other media on the Internet at ekaq.stonecenter.tulane.edu, will allow learners to develop proficiency in all five major language skills—listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and sociocultural understanding.
Download or read book The Word Made Flesh Herbert s The Church Shaping Meaning in Two foot Lines written by Kari Fretham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the poems in George Herbert's TheChurch (1633) are one-of-a-kind irregularlyshaped anomalies. By employing the dimeter infifty of the one hundred and sixty poems, Herbertwas able to create a wide variety of outlinepatterns. The poems that contain lines of two-feetnot only include silhouettes of objects (e.g., Easter Wings and The Altar), but also shapes thatmirror physical movement and internal processesas well. After reviewing how the dimeter functions in non-dramatic English poetry published before 1633and what is given shape in Greek, neo-Latin, andEnglish figure poetry preceding The Church, Idiscuss in great detail how George Herbert walksoutside any practice before him by means of histwo-feet to radically fuse content and form. Asthe words become the flesh of forms, simultaneously each fresh incarnation looks, works and speaks the word that gives it life.
Download or read book Shakespeare s Arguments with History written by R. Knowles and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argument was the basis of Renaissance education; both rhetoric and dialectic permeated early modern humanist culture, including drama. This study approaches Shakespeare's history plays by analyzing the use of argument in the plays and examining the importance of argument in Renaissance culture. Knowles shows how analysis of arguments of speech and action take us to the core of the plays, in which Shakespeare interrogates the nature of political morality and truth as grounded in the history of what men do and say.
