Book Giant Dipole Resonance in the Hot and Thermalized 132Ce Nucleus

Download or read book Giant Dipole Resonance in the Hot and Thermalized 132Ce Nucleus written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The [gamma] decay of the Giant Dipole Resonance in the 132Ce compound nucleus with temperature up to ≈ 4 MeV has been measured. The symmetric 64Ni + 68Zn at E{sub beam} = 300, 400, 500 MeV and the asymmetric reaction 16O + 116Sn at E{sub beam} = 130, 250 MeV have been investigated. Light charged particles and [gamma] rays have been detected in coincidence with the recoiling compound system. In the case of the mass symmetric 64Ni induced reaction the [gamma] and charged particle spectral shapes are found to be consistent with the emission from a fully equilibrated compound nuclei and the GDR parameters are extracted from the data using a statistical model analysis. The GDR width is found to increase almost linear with temperature. This increase is rather well reproduced within a model which includes both the thermal fluctuation of the nuclear shape and the lifetime of the compound nucleus.

Book The Temperature Dependence of the Width of the Giant Dipole Resonance

Download or read book The Temperature Dependence of the Width of the Giant Dipole Resonance written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic study of the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR) as a function of temperature for the nuclei 12°Sn and 2°8Pb confirms the overall theoretical picture of the GDR in hot nuclei; in particular, the role played by large-amplitude thermal fluctuations of the nuclear shape. This is confirmed by the good agreement between theory and experiment achieved over a range of temperatures from 1.25--32 MeV and by the differences in the behavior of the FWHM for 12°Sn and 2°8Pb, which can be attributed to the presence of strong shell corrections favoring spherical shapes in 2°8Pb that are absent in 12°Sn. Finally, the increase in the FWHM over that expected from thermal averaging at temperatures of the order 3.0 MeV is in accordance with the increase expected from the particle evaporation of the compound system.

Book excerpt: The series of volumes, Contemporary Concepts in Physics, is addressed to the professional physicist and to the serious graduate student of physics. The subject of many-body systems constitutes a central chapter in the study of quantum mechanics, with applications ranging from elementary particle and condensed matter physics to the behaviour of compact stellar objects. Quantal size effects is one of the most fascinating facets of many-body physics; this is testified to by the developments taking place in the study of metallic clusters, fullerenes, nanophase materials, and atomic nuclei. This book is divided into two main parts: the study of giant resonances based on the atomic nucleus ground state (zero temperature), and the study of the y-decay of giant resonances from compound (finite temperature) nuclei.

This book was released on 1994-10-25 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings treat the production of high energy gamma rays and particles (mesons and dileptons) in heavy ion reactions from energies of about 30 MeV·A to a few GeV·A, and its application to the study of the Nuclear Equation of State from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Giant resonances, intensity interferometry, meson fotoproduction and applications of intermediate energy heavy ion beams are also discussed.

Book An Investigation of the Natural Line Shape of the Giant Dipole Resonance

Download or read book An Investigation of the Natural Line Shape of the Giant Dipole Resonance written by Edward Franklin Gordon and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of photoabsorption experiments in the spherical nucleus (141)pr, the quasispherical dynamically deformed (197)Au, and the statically deformed (165)Ho showed that the best function for the energy dependence of the reduced transition probability is given by the Breit-Wigner form rather than the Lorentz form of a resonance function. However, the form of the resulting measured cross section is of the Lorentz type. The dependence of the giant resonance width Gamma on the excitation energy was also investigated. The variation was found to be less than 1% per MeV if one considered the known isovector E2 resonances above the giant dipole resonance. Best fit values of the reduced transition probabilities for the three nuclei are given and compared to (e, e') results.

Book Description of Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance in Nuclei

Download or read book Description of Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance in Nuclei written by Oleksiy Grigorievich Pochivalov and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applicability of the Hartree-Fock (HF) based random phase approximation (RPA) with several Skyrme effective interactions to the description of the isoscalar giant monopole (ISGMR) and the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in 90Zr, 116Sn, 144Sm and 208Pb nuclei has been investigated. The existing Skyrme interactions SL1, SkM*, SGII, Sly4 and Sk255 were used. Hartree-Fock description of the ground state properties of all nuclei of interest was obtained using these Skyrme interactions. Transition strength distributions for the ISGMR and the ISGDR in nuclei of interest were calculated using coordinate space representation for the RPA in the Green0́9s function formalism with discretized continuum. A method of projecting out the spurious state contribution from the transition strength distribution and the transition density of the ISGDR was employed to eliminate spurious state mixing, due to a not fully selfconsistent description of the particle-hole interaction within the RPA. Differential cross sections of 240 MeV alpha-particles inelastic scattering on all nuclei of interest were calculated using the folding model within the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). Optical potentials were obtained by folding HF ground state densities with a alpha-nucleon density dependent Gaussian interaction. Parameters of the interaction were obtained by fitting experimental angular distribution of alpha-nucleus elastic scattering. The inelastic differential cross sections were calculated using both collective and microscopic transition densities. Possible underestimations of the energy weighted sum rule for the case of the ISGDR are reported. An alternative description for the ISGDR in nuclei based on the Fermi liquid drop model (FLDM) with the collisional Fermi surface distortion was investigated. The FLDM dispersion relation was obtained from the linearized Landau-Vlasov equation. Centroid energies, E0 and E1, and widths, gamma-0 and gamma-1, of the ISGMR and ISGDR, respectively, were calculated as functions of the damping parameter using appropriate boundary conditions. Comparison of the theoretical ratios of the ISGDR and ISGMR centroid energies, E1/E0, to the experimental values resulted in a damping parameter equal to 0.5, however, systematic overestimation of energy of the ISGMR and ISGDR by 2.0-2.5 MeV was observed. The applicability of the HF-RPA to the description for the ISGDR in nuclei is confirmed.
