Book Foreign Direct Investment in Emerging Economies

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Emerging Economies written by Lou Anne A. Barclay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean countries of Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad-Tobago represent excellent examples of the increasingly important role played by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in less developed, micro-economies. The increased dependence of these countries on FDI, however, calls into question the attractiveness of the business environment of the region to the foreign investor. This volume examines both the investment behaviour and corporate strategies operating in these three countries, and assesses the factors which influence the motivations, location choices and market entry mode of multinationals making investments in the Caribbean.

This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign investments in the energy sector raise formidable legal questions, often requiring a delicate balance between private and public interests of the various stakeholders. Foreign Investment in the Energy Sector: Balancing Private and Public Interests opens with a discussion of the legal protection of foreign investment in the main segments of the energy sector (namely oil, gas, mining and hydroelectric industry), both in substantive and procedural terms. This second part of the book focuses on the Energy Charter Treaty, by far the most important international legal instrument in the energy sector, and its future after the decision of the Russian Federation not to ratify it. In its third part, the book examines four critical areas that are often negatively concerned by economic activities by multinational in the energy sector, namely compliance with safety and labour standards, protection of the environment, respect of indigenous peoples rights, and protection of public health. Foreign Investment in the Energy Sector: Balancing Private and Public Interests, a comprehensive collection of essays from experts and practitioners, offers an important new resource to the field.

Book International Capital Flows

Download or read book International Capital Flows written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in technology, along with the opening up of many regions previously closed to investment, have led to explosive growth in the international movement of capital. Flows from foreign direct investment and debt and equity financing can bring countries substantial gains by augmenting local savings and by improving technology and incentives. Investing companies acquire market access, lower cost inputs, and opportunities for profitable introductions of production methods in the countries where they invest. But, as was underscored recently by the economic and financial crises in several Asian countries, capital flows can also bring risks. Although there is no simple explanation of the currency crisis in Asia, it is clear that fixed exchange rates and chronic deficits increased the likelihood of a breakdown. Similarly, during the 1970s, the United States and other industrial countries loaned OPEC surpluses to borrowers in Latin America. But when the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates to control soaring inflation, the result was a widespread debt moratorium in Latin America as many countries throughout the region struggled to pay the high interest on their foreign loans. International Capital Flows contains recent work by eminent scholars and practitioners on the experience of capital flows to Latin America, Asia, and eastern Europe. These papers discuss the role of banks, equity markets, and foreign direct investment in international capital flows, and the risks that investors and others face with these transactions. By focusing on capital flows' productivity and determinants, and the policy issues they raise, this collection is a valuable resource for economists, policymakers, and financial market participants.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia written by Pravakar Sahoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America written by Manuel Agosin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment has quadrupled over the past decade in Latin America, which today is one of the world's major investment magnets. Yet the question of which foreign investment policies maximize these inflows remains unanswered. Even though the shift to market-oriented economies has liberalized investment policies throughout Latin America, FDI remains concentrated in only a few countries. Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America evaluates the volume of these new FDI inflows, the factors that attracted them, and their contribution to Latin American development. The book analyzes investment decisions in part through a comprehensive survey of businesses that have recently invested in the region. Case studies of FDI flows to Argentina, Chile and Colombia examine the role of foreign investment liberalization, incentives and performance requirements, complementary policies in such areas as macroeconomics, taxation, foreign exchange and trade, and foreign debt conversion programs.

Book Economic Drivers

Download or read book Economic Drivers written by Maisy Sasha and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India stands out as the world's fastest-growing economy, with the oil and natural gas industry assuming a pivotal role in bolstering the nation's economic prosperity. This industry contributes significantly by powering transportation networks, driving manufacturing processes in mills and factories, and offering lucrative investment opportunities for investors seeking substantial returns. The oil and natural gas sector occupies a prominent position among India's eight core industries, exerting a profound impact on the nation's economic landscape. Its historical significance is evident, considering it is one of the oldest industries in the country. The industry's initial development was characterized by a slow and steady progression, primarily commencing in the northeastern region, notably in Diadoi, Assam. In 1970, the production and exploration of petroleum in the northeastern states faced restrictions, leading the Government of India to introduce the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1954. This policy, under the purview of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, was designed to foster the growth and promotion of industries across India. The government took complete ownership and control of all pertinent activities within the oil and natural gas sectors. Subsequently, with the advent of liberalization and privatization in India, the private sector also became actively involved in this industry. Notably, the industry now allows for 100% foreign direct investment (FDI). The oil and natural gas sector encompasses a spectrum of processes and activities, including exploration, refining, petrochemicals, transportation, and the marketing of petroleum and natural gas products. It is categorized into three major segments: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Companies engaged in crude oil and gas exploration and extraction fall within the upstream category, while those involved in storage and production operate in the midstream sector. Companies engaged in refining, production, and marketing constitute the downstream sector.
