Book Role Conflict and the Teacher

Download or read book Role Conflict and the Teacher written by Gerald Rupert Grace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerald Grace here explores the concept of role conflict and the current theorizing about the problems of the teacher's role. He investigates four potential problem areas - role diffuseness, role vulnerability, role commitment versus career orientation, and value conflict - in a sample of one hundred and fifty secondary school teachers in a Midland town. The analysis shows how a teacher's commitment to a particular set of values exposes him or her to conflict in an achievement-oriented and pluralistic society. These conflicts, present in all schools, are seen in their clearest form among secondary modern school teachers. The author suggests that colleges of education, in emphasizing commitment and in assuming value consensus, predispose their students to conflict experiences. He indicates that internal career possibilities in schools and the influence of graduate or certified status are also important factors in conflict exposure. While accepting that certain role conflicts are important in the genesis of change, the author proposes that levels of dysfunctional conflict can be reduced by the action of head teachers, by structural change in the schools and innovations in teaching education.

Book Teacher in a role conflict A focus on parents

Download or read book Teacher in a role conflict A focus on parents written by Nicky Jan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,6, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: In the last years the job as a teacher has become more and more stressful as many studies about burnout prove. One reason for this might be that teachers are put under pressure by various factors, for example the pressure to answer their own expectations, the parents, who get involved more and more into the school and the classroom, the feeling to be as good as other colleagues, the ongoing changes in the syllabus and structural changes that expect more and more from teachers, social expectations or status and many more aspects. The school is a social system and teachers are very important parts of this system, but unfortunately there is little attention paid to this fact. Many studies that try to analyze the system “school” mainly focus on the students and little on the teachers.

Book Learning to Lead Together

Download or read book Learning to Lead Together written by Janet H. Chrispeels and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-04-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Too often the response to good ideas is ′it won′t work here.′ This book respects that perspective by providing school leaders with studies from the field that describe efforts that have and have not worked. The concept of shared leadership is presented in a ′real world′ context, including the voices of those who don′t want it. The reader will develop a better understanding of what true collaboration can look like along with the challenges leaders may face as the culture of their school adapts to change." —Stephen Gruenert, Indiana State University "Learning to Lead Together connects leadership theory with experiences from the field—it is very useful to practitioners and to individuals preparing for formal school leadership positions." —Albert H. Fein, Gonzaga University "Janet Chrispeel′s Learning to Lead Together provides a rich anthology of real experiences of school based leaders caught in the vortex of leading and learning on the one hand and teaching and leading on the other. I highly recommend this new work to students seeking real answers to real problems." —James C. Moulton, Jr., Consulting Principal, Fairfax County Public Schools Learning to Lead Together: The Promise and Challenge of Sharing Leadership examines the dilemmas for school leaders and administrators, and the benefits for schools and students, when principals work with teachers (and their communities) to share leadership. Most schools function within existing hierarchical structures that contradict and undermine many of the conditions necessary for shared leadership. Current school reform initiatives and policies urge or require that teachers be actively involved in decision-making without addressing systemic dilemmas and paradoxes. Through real-life single and multiple case studies, Learning to Lead Together addresses how principals and their staffs struggle with the challenge of shared leadership, how they encourage teacher growth and development, and how shared leadership can lead to higher levels of student learning. The cases show how shared leadership, a powerful adaptive change, is socially constructed across contexts and evolves as teachers and principals learn how to work together. The book also illustrates how principal preparation and professional development programs that utilize problem-based learning and provide opportunities for genuine collaboration with colleagues can provide school leaders with the skills they need to share leadership and accountability effectively. This book is ideally suited as a supplemental text for courses in educational leadership and administration. School administrators, superintendents, and principals will also find this an invaluable reference.

  • Author : Theodore J. Kowalski
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-08-14
  • ISBN : 1135156859
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The School Principal written by Theodore J. Kowalski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-08-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, efforts to improve schools have significantly modified role expectations for principals. Today, school-level administrators are expected to be both visionary leaders and competent managers. Based on the conviction that administration is an amalgam of leadership and management, The School Principal emphasizes the need for practitioners to apply conceptual skills to make "what to do" decisions, to apply technical skills to make "how to do" decisions, and to apply relational skills to engage in democratic decision making. Kowalski frames the book with a discussion of the nature of schools, the roles of principals, and their need to improve schools. The book then provides a balanced treatment of leadership and management, covering issues of personal behavior, instructional leadership, relationship building issues, finances, facilities, personnel management, pupil services, and maintaining safe schools. The text closes with discussion of the vital aspects of practice for contemporary principals, addressing problem solving, collaborative change strategies, and personal commitment to being a principal. Special Features: Vignettes introduce the subject matter in the context of common challenges faced by practitioners. Knowledge-Based Questions and Skill-Based Activities prompt readers to engage with and reflect on the chapter content. The School Principal aligns with the Educational Leadership Consortium Council (ELCC) Standards. Treating principals as concurrently visionary leaders and competent managers, this excellent text addresses the needs of aspiring and practicing principals, providing the tools to build effective and efficient schools.
