Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mumbai was almost submerged on the fatal noon of 26 July 2005, when the merciless downpour and cloudburst had spread utter darkness and horror in the heart of the city. River Mithi was inundated, and the sea was furious. At this hour of torturous gloom, Rohzin begins declaring in the first line that it was the last day in the life of two lovers, Asrar and Hina. The novel's protagonist, Asrar, comes to Mumbai, and through his eyes the author describes the hitherto-unknown aspects of Mumbai, unseen colours and unseen secrets of the city's underbelly. The love story of Asar and Hina begins abruptly and ends tragically. It is love at first sight which takes place in the premises of Haji Ali Dargah. The arc of the novel studies various aspects of human emotions, especially love, longing and sexuality as sublime expressions. The emotions are examined, so is love as well as the absence of it, through a gamut of characters and their interrelated lives: Asrar's relationship with his teacher, Ms Jamila, a prostitute named Shanti and, later, with Hina; Hina's classmate Vidhi's relations with her lover and others; Hina's father Yusuf's love for Aymal; Vanu's indulgence in prostitutes. Rohzin dwells on the plane of an imagination that takes readers on a unique journey across the city of Mumbai, a highly intriguing character in its own right.

Book excerpt: In a world where more women are joining the work force, where ever more are stepping out from their secluded and cloistered world and can be physically seen in larger numbers, this collection seeks to explore how male writers in Urdu view and consequently present or represent the women of their world. In her Introduction, Rakhshanda Jalil traces the history of ‘writings on women’ by both male and female writers — from the doyens of Urdu literature to contemporary writers dealing with contemporary issues, setting the mood for the stories in this collection and giving the reader a sampler of what to expect in the ensuing pages. The collection includes themes which are timeless as well as topics that are an outcome of the times we live in. Starting with two of the four pillars of the Urdu short story – Rajinder Singh Bedi and Krishan Chandar – who can be credited with introducing a realistic portrayal of women in Urdu fiction, the stories in this volume offer multiple ways of ‘seeing’ women.

Book excerpt: My father has probably untied me from the electric pole. now I am lying in a narrow and dark cell like a sick and physically depleted animal, My tongue lolling out. There lie a few loaves of Chapattis and a small bowl of pulses or perhaps curry in a corner. But I am not able to bite My morsel.ages have passed since I entered this state. Sometimes, a bright day dawns with the sun scowling for ages, and sometimes everything remains plunged into darkness alone to itself, The heart hangs from a washing line like a wrung out towel, waving and fluttering in the wind.the building sprawling across miles is fenced by the black and sinister-looking high walls overgrown with weeds. during the nights their roar gets distinctly louder, stirring the creepy and eerie feelings. The tall eucalyptus trees standing in rows peer ominously at the desolate area, and throughout the day the monkeys go on jumping onto the walls from trees and then up on the trees. The stray cats climb the dreary walls to let out whimpers.the forlorn building is surrounded by long corridors inhabited by the ghosts and witches resembling human beings. Sometimes, they let out piercing shrieks in unison.and sometimes they roar with laughter rending the air.quite frequently, the eerie and Lonely lanes echo with the sound of some unseen heavy footsteps.the place is also peopled by a few human beings deployed as guards for the security of the ghosts and the witches jarring sound of a burning kerosene stove deepens the weirdness of the silence. In the still of the night, some hyenas are heard Roaring with laughter somewhere in the distance. And perched on a hidden branch is an owl shooting ominously while adding uncanny mysteriousness to the looming silence. The Lonely road reverberates with such a terrifying roar of trucks that other sounds die down.(from the book of death).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling, analysis and simulation are set to play crucial roles in explaining tumor behavior, and the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells over multiple time and spatial scales. This book, the first to integrate state-of-the-art numerical techniques with experimental data, provides an in-depth assessment of tumor cell modeling at multiple scales. The first part of the text presents a detailed biological background with an examination of single-phase and multi-phase continuum tumor modeling, discrete cell modeling, and hybrid continuum-discrete modeling. In the final two chapters, the authors guide the reader through problem-based illustrations and case studies of brain and breast cancer, to demonstrate the future potential of modeling in cancer research. This book has wide interdisciplinary appeal and is a valuable resource for mathematical biologists, biomedical engineers and clinical cancer research communities wishing to understand this emerging field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book-the fourth volume of a series on Can cer Markers-is intended to provide an updated "status report" on today's use of cancer markers in the diagnosis and monitoring of can cer, with an emphasis on cancer markers detected in the serum. It has been 7 years since the publication of the last volume in this series. The 1980, 1982, and 1985 volumes covered the development of cancer markers, not only in their roles of unraveling the basic biology of can cer, but also as increasingly important players in the management of patients with cancer. During the last 7 years we have seen the applica tion of a number of markers identified by monoclonal antibodies, as well as the beginnings of the use of genetic markers defined by mo lecular probes. Measurements of oncogenes in tissues or cells prom ise many applications for the future, but as yet, these genes have not shown to be useful as serum markers of cancer. The commercial interest in serum markers for cancer, particu larly for the diagnosis and monitoring of tumor patients, is indicated in Chapter 24 by Owen, where the total worldwide market for cancer markers is projected to increase from $148 million in 1988 to $232 million in 1993. The degree of research interest in cancer markers is reflected in the fact that in 1988 a separate category for tumor mark ers was added to Index Medicus.

Her neighbours deal with adultery, abandonment and abuse, by hoping for a place in heaven. Life is unyielding for the tenants of the rundown Obrigado Mansion in Orlem, a Roman Catholic parish in suburban Bombay. They grapple with love, loss and sin, surrounded by abused wives and repressed widows, alcoholic husbands and dubious evangelists, angry teenagers and ambivalent priests, all struggling to make sense of circumstances they have no control over. Gods and Ends takes up multiple threads of individual stories to create a larger picture of darkness beneath a seemingly placid surface. It is about intersecting lives struggling to accept change as homes turn into prisons. This is a book about invisible people in a city of millions, and the claustrophobia they rarely manage to escape from.
