Book excerpt: For train enthusiasts, model railroaders, and history buffs, hop aboard this tour of North American railroads, both great and obscure. Few images speak as clearly of a time and a place as a dramatic black-and-white photograph of an American steam locomotive powering through that storied era of railroad history. All the new photographs in this beautiful book meticulously recreate that original style, capturing the bygone age of steam rail against the settings of its heyday, including period architecture and other details. The result is the crisp, stunning quality of contemporary photography of the iconic locomotives of yesteryear. Featured trains include the Milwaukee Road; the Cumbres and Toltec snowplow runs; the Cotton Belt 819 in Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois; the Savannah and Atlanta No. 750; the Frisco 1522 in Missouri; the Norfolk and Western 611 and 1218 in Georgia and Tennessee; the Union Pacific 3985 in Wyoming, Nebraska and Arkansas—these are just some of the historic runs and routes Steam Trains brings this era to life with its evocative photographs and accompanying narrative accounts of the locomotives that are still cherished today. This fantastic photographic gallery features twenty-three preserved steam railroad lines and events covering a twenty-five year period. Perfect for train enthusiasts, model railroaders, and history buffs alike, North American railroads, both great and obscure, are highlighted in Steam Trains.

Book excerpt: "This volume represents the fourth in a series of five Class 1 Overview histories prepared by the Colorado State Office, Bureau of Land Management. The purpose of these works is to develop a synthetic history of a given area in order to provide our managers and staff specialists with a baseline overview of the history of a district. ... It must be noted that the major cities , like Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Greeley are only mentioned. This is because there is no public land in these places and the Bureau's mandate is to manage the public lands, not private estates."--Foreword.

Book Silverton and the Alpine Loop

Download or read book Silverton and the Alpine Loop written by Jeff Corr and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ancestral hunting grounds of mountain people known as the Utes, the future site of Silverton was explored by nomadic hunters for generations. During the 1860s, Charles Baker, an early mining prospector, discovered some mineral wealth in the area and spread highly exaggerated rumors that brought in even more prospectors. Significant wealth was found in Arrastra Gulch along the Alpine Loop, north of Bakers Park. From the beginning of its mining heritage, Silverton has gone through periods of boom to bust. In the 1950s, the area was discovered by Hollywood, increasing its appeal to tourism, and in the 1960s, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad reinvested heavily to dedicate itself to tourist travel. Although mining continued on a limited basis up until the 1990s, Silvertons economy is now supported by those who come for its history, picturesque landscapes, fly fishing, jeeping, and hiking.

Book 3 Days 20 Bucks

Download or read book 3 Days 20 Bucks written by Stan Rhine and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club is known for organizing some of the greatest trips over the Colorado narrow gauge lines, and their annual Memorial Day rail excursions were legendary. In an era when railfans donned suit and tie to chase trains, carried their trusty Brownie and Speed Graphic cameras, and counted their exposures more carefully than their lunch money, a young Stan Rhine ponied up his 20 bucks and joined the fun. Rubbing elbows with other club members, Dr. Rhine captured shots of both familiar and vanished locations on film. For the first time in print, he tells the story of these start-of-summer weekend rail jaunts. He also touches on some of the club's other narrow gauge excursions and, as a bonus, gives us the story of the last narrow gauge passenger train movement from Alamosa

Book Colorado A History of the Centennial State Fourth Edition

Download or read book Colorado A History of the Centennial State Fourth Edition written by Thomas J. Noel and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1976 newcomers and natives alike have learned about the rich history of the magnificent place they call home from Colorado: A History of the Centennial State. In this revised edition, co-authors Carl Abbott, Stephen J. Leonard, and Thomas J. Noel incorporate more than a decade of new events, findings, and insights about Colorado in an accessible volume that general readers and students will enjoy. The fourth edition tells of conflicts, new alliances, and changing ways of life as Hispanic, European, and African American settlers flooded into a region that was already home to Native Americans. Providing balanced coverage of the entire state's history - from Grand Junction to Lamar and from Trinidad to Craig - the authors also reveal how Denver and its surrounding communities developed and gained influence. While continuing to elucidate the significant impact of mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism on Colorado, this edition broadens its coverage. The authors expand their discussion of the twentieth century with several new chapters on the economy, politics, and cultural conflicts of recent years. In addition, they address changes in attitudes toward the natural environment as well as the contributions of women, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans to the state. Dozens of new illustrations, updated statistics, and an extensive bibliography of the most recent research on Colorado history enhance this edition.

Book Railroads of Colorado

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phelps R. Griswold
  • Publisher : American Traveler Press
  • Release : 1988
  • ISBN : 9781558380882
  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Railroads of Colorado written by Phelps R. Griswold and published by American Traveler Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just mention Colorado to the avid rail fan and you have their interest; add the term 'narrow gauge' and you have their undivided attention. Why this special interest in the Centennial State's railroads which span 120 years? One reason is Colorado's geography -- relatively flat plains in the eastern third of the state, the rugged Rocky Mountains in the central and southwest areas. Colorado's railroads traverse all these regions -- from a 2285 foot elevation to the heights of 14,000 foot peaks. This geographical configuration makes Colorado railroading second to none.
