Book B 1B Lancer Units in Combat

Download or read book B 1B Lancer Units in Combat written by Thomas Withington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the B-1B Lancer bomber was difficult to say the least. Originally conceived to fulfill a USAF requirement for an Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft, the original B-1A concept aircraft was accused of being a white elephant, capable of performing nothing which could not be achieved at less financial and human expense than an intercontinental ballistic missile. Cancelled by the Carter administration and finally commissioned by President Reagan as the modified B-1B, the Lancer began its duties as a nuclear-armed bomber in the mid-1980s. The end of the Cold War intervened and the jet was removed from its nuclear missions as a result of arms control legislation. However, the 1990s saw the metamorphosis of the Lancer into a potent conventional weapons carrier which has seen action in Iraq, the Balkans and Afghanistan. The Lancer has proved its critics wrong in demonstrating its use as a highly flexible and hard-working bomber, able to undertake diverse missions ranging from CAS to the targeting of weapons-of-mass-destruction installations.

  • Author : Kenneth Katz
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword Aviation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This profusely illustrated and thoroughly researched book conveys a wealth of information” about the USAF’s B-1 bomber (Aviation History Magazine). When the B-52 Stratofortress entered operational service with the US Air Force in 1955, work was already underway on defining its successor. The B-70 Valkyrie, a Mach 3 jet bomber, was one option. Although two XB-70A prototypes flew, the B-70 never went into production. Out of the subsequent Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft program came the B-1A bomber, which flew at high speed and low altitude to evade enemy air defenses. But the B-1A was cancelled in favor of fitting the B-52 with cruise missiles. The B-1, known as the BONE, was revived in 1981 as the improved B-1B to boost American military power and serve as a symbol of American strength at the peak of Cold War tensions. The B-1B entered service in 1986 with several deficiencies. The resolution of most of these issues coincided with the end of the Cold War. After the Cold War, the B-1B lost its primary nuclear mission but remained relevant by transforming into a high-speed, long-range, high-payload delivery platform for conventional precision-guided munitions. The first combat use of the B-1B was in 1998 in Iraq. The BONE has proved a highly effective combat aircraft in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and the former Yugoslavia. This extensively illustrated book traces the BONE’s long development and operational history in detail. “A must-read book . . . a great reference for historians, pilots, engineers, and even policy makers. Both the writing and photos are excellent.” —Air & Space Power History

Book B 1B Bomber and Options for Enhancements

Download or read book B 1B Bomber and Options for Enhancements written by Jeffrey A. Merkley and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-1B bomber has many special features that enhance its ability to penetrate Soviet air defenses. Even so, many reported deficiencies -- including shortcomings in the bomber¿s defensive and offensive avionics and a range that is shorter than anticipated -- have instilled doubts about its capability to perform the mission for which it was originally designed. This report raises three fundamental questions: (1) How serious are the deficiencies? (2) Should the U.S. change current plans and use the B-1B bomber as a standoff bomber carrying cruise missiles rather than as a penetrating bomber? (3) What enhancements should the Congress fund to improve the B-1B as either a penetrating bomber or as a standoff bomber? Illustrations.

Book B 1B Model

    Book Details:
  • Author : Glenn Hoover
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-11-08
  • ISBN : 9781731052278
  • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book B 1B Model written by Glenn Hoover and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains detailed instructions on building the B-1B LANCER 1/48 scale model aircraft from Revell. This book was written for the 4900 Limited Edition but can also be used for the 5714 kit. Special thanks to the B-1B Builders Support Group on Facebook A spiral bound version is available in my website glennhoovermodels.com. In addition to the kit's instructions, there are 7 aftermarket kits each with their own instruction. Can you imagine merging all of these instructions? Well, I've done that for you and more. I take the model kit instructions from Revell and break them up into individual steps. This model is huge. It is much bigger than most workbenches. The fuselage is 36 inches long and with the wings fully extended, the width is 35 inches. So we're going to break the build into 3 major sections - Wings, Fuselage, and Engines.I also incorporate Eduard's Photo Etch sets 48857 and 49737 along with Barracuda; Late Exhaust Set, Engine Intake Set, External Upgrade Set, and the Main & Nose Wheel Set in with Revell's instructions. As most modelers know, it can be tricky to go back and forth between the model kit instructions and the aftermarket kit instructions. I took out the guesswork and did that for you. The aftermarket steps are colored gray making them easy to skip if you just have the basic model. This book provides a little history of the Lancer, photos the aftermarket kits, a detailed list of tools that I used to build this model, along with a list of paints. The actual instruction section contains 778 steps and 140 plus figures over 165 pages that tell you what to dry fit, glue, and/or paint for each individual piece. Each step instruction shows the source (i.e., either Revell or aftermarket instruction) along with a block to mark that you completed the step. The major instruction sequence for this model is 1. Nose Landing Gear Wheel Well 2. Cockpit 3. Ladder 4. Radar 5. Main Landing Gear Wheel Well 6. Weapons 7. Lower Fuselage Assembly 8. Wings9. Fuselage Section Assembly 10. Horizontal Stabilizers 11. Canopy12. Sniper ATP and Pylon 13. Antennas 14. Vortex Generators 15. Paint and Decals 16. Engines Assembly 17. Add Engines 18. Nose Gear 19. Main Landing Gear 20. Add Wings I provide an index of the individual sprue parts that show where in the book the part is mentioned. This index was a great way to make sure that no pieces were overlooked. Finally, there are several pages of in-process photos with assembly tips and the final photos of my build for reference. This book is a great checklist to make your build go smoothly. Of course, you can feel free to use different tools, paint, weathering, etc. or even add your own diorama. I hope you find this book useful. See a 16-page sample along with photos of finished models and other books at glennhoovermodels.com.

Book Fire on the Water Second Edition

Download or read book Fire on the Water Second Edition written by Robert J Haddick and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Robert Haddick wrote Fire on the Water, first published in 2014, most policy experts and the public underestimated the threat China’s military modernization posed to the U.S. strategic position in the Indo-Pacific region. Today, the rapid Chinese military buildup has many policy experts wondering whether the United States and its allies can maintain conventional military deterrence in the region, and the topic is central to defense planning in the United States. In this new edition, Haddick argues that the United States and its allies can sustain conventional deterrence in the face of China's military buildup. However, doing so will require U.S. policymakers and planners to overcome institutional and cultural barriers to reforms necessary to implement a new strategy for the region. Fire on the Water, Second Edition also presents the sources of conflict in Asia and explains why America's best option is to maintain its active forward presence in the region. Haddick relates the history of America's military presence in the Indo-Pacific and shows why that presence is now vulnerable. The author details China's military modernization program, how it is shrewdly exploiting the military-technical revolution, and why it now poses a grave threat to U.S. and allied interests. He considers the U.S. responses to China's military modernization over the past decade and discusses why these responses fall short of a convincing competitive strategy. Detailing a new approach for sustaining conventional deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region, the author discusses the principles of strategy as they apply to the problems the United States faces in the region. He explains the critical role of aerospace power in the region and argues that the United States should urgently refashion its aerospace concepts if it is to deter aggression, focusing on Taiwan, the most difficult case. Haddick illustrates how the military-technical revolution has drastically changed the potential of naval forces in the Indo-Pacific region and why U.S. policymakers and planners need to adjust their expectations and planning for naval forces. Finally, he elucidates lessons U.S. policymakers can apply from past great-power competitions, examines long-term trends affecting the current competition, summarizes a new U.S. strategic approach to the region, describes how U.S. policymakers can overcome institutional barriers that stand in the way of a better strategy, and explains why U.S. policymakers and the public should have confidence about sustaining deterrence and peace in the region over the long term.
