Book excerpt: Rockhampton is situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River and has a long history of flooding. Large floods have the impact of cutting road, rail and fixed-wing air access and potentially isolating the city for weeks at a time. The Rockhampton Regional Council commissioned Aurecon Australia to undertake a flood study of the area. The Fitzroy River Flood Study report provides hydrological modelling for potential floods events in the Fitzroy River catchment, flood mapping to be incorporated into the Council's GIS system and tools to assist with development assessment and emergency management planning activities. In addition, the Fitzroy River Floodplain and Road Planning Study has investigated long term solutions for existing and forecast Bruce Highway and North Coast Rail Line flooding, freight and road transport impacts in and around the city of Rockhampton.
