Book Synchronous Generators and Excitation Systems Operating in a Power System

Download or read book Synchronous Generators and Excitation Systems Operating in a Power System written by Stefan Paszek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In simulation tests of dynamic states of the power system (PS), the database of parameters of mathematical models of generating units is most commonly used. In many cases, the parameter values are burdened with large errors. Consequently, the results obtained are not reliable and do not allow drawing true conclusions. This monograph presents the developed methods and tools supporting the process of measurement determination of reliable values of parameters of mathematical models of synchronous generators and excitation systems. Special measurement tests are the basis for determining the parameters. The tests can be carried out in conditions of normal operation of generating units, in which electrical machines operate in the state of saturation of magnetic cores, and voltage regulators can reach limits. This book is intended for specialists in power engineering as well as students of faculties of electrical engineering interested in issues of PS transient states.

Download or read book Robust Control for Grid Voltage Stability High Penetration of Renewable Energy written by Jahangir Hossain and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes the area of integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity grid accessible to engineers and researchers. This is a self-contained text which has models of power system devices and control theory necessary to understand and tune controllers in use currently. The new research in renewable energy integration is put into perspective by comparing the change in the system dynamics as compared to the traditional electricity grid. The emergence of the voltage stability problem is motivated by extensive examples. Various methods to mitigate this problem are discussed bringing out their merits clearly. As a solution to the voltage stability problem, the book covers the use of FACTS devices and basic control methods. An important contribution of this book is to introduce advanced control methods for voltage stability. It covers the application of output feedback methods with a special emphasis on how to bound modelling uncertainties and the use of robust control theory to design controllers for practical power systems. Special emphasis is given to designing controllers for FACTS devices to improve low-voltage ride-through capability of induction generators. As generally PV is connected in low voltage distribution area, this book also provides a systematic control design for the PV unit in distribution systems. The theory is amply illustrated with large IEEE Test systems with multiple generators and dynamic load. Controllers are designed using Matlab and tested using full system models in PSSE.

Book Robust and Adaptive Control for Synchronous Generator s Operation Improvement

Download or read book Robust and Adaptive Control for Synchronous Generator s Operation Improvement written by Jozef Ritonja and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synchronous generators produce almost 95% of the world,Äôs electricity. Even a small improvement in their efficiency represents huge savings. Electromechanical oscillations of synchronous generators are harmful,Äîthey cause losses and can even lead to instability. An additional control system, called a power system stabilizer (PSS), is used to damp the oscillations of synchronous generators. The commercial realizations of the power system stabilizers are based on the use of the linear control theory. The effectiveness of these power system stabilizers is small, because of the nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of the synchronous generators. The application of robust and adaptive control represents an adequate theoretical basis for ensuring optimal damping of the electromechanical oscillations in a wide operating range. This work reviews the applicability of the advanced control theories to develop power system stabilizers. The work is focused on selecting the appropriate robust and adaptive control theories for the power system stabilizer implementation. The applicability and advantages are presented of the sliding mode control and the direct adaptive control, along with an evaluation of their impact on the operation improvement.

Book Robust Power System Frequency Control

Download or read book Robust Power System Frequency Control written by Hassan Bevrani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated edition of the industry standard reference on power system frequency control provides practical, systematic and flexible algorithms for regulating load frequency, offering new solutions to the technical challenges introduced by the escalating role of distributed generation and renewable energy sources in smart electric grids. The author emphasizes the physical constraints and practical engineering issues related to frequency in a deregulated environment, while fostering a conceptual understanding of frequency regulation and robust control techniques. The resulting control strategies bridge the gap between advantageous robust controls and traditional power system design, and are supplemented by real-time simulations. The impacts of low inertia and damping effect on system frequency in the presence of increased distributed and renewable penetration are given particular consideration, as the bulk synchronous machines of conventional frequency control are rendered ineffective in emerging grid environments where distributed/variable units with little or no rotating mass become dominant. Frequency stability and control issues relevant to the exciting new field of microgrids are also undertaken in this new edition. As frequency control becomes increasingly significant in the design of ever-more complex power systems, this expert guide ensures engineers are prepared to deploy smart grids with optimal functionality.

Book Adaptive Switching Control of Large Scale Complex Power Systems

Download or read book Adaptive Switching Control of Large Scale Complex Power Systems written by Yang Liu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest research on switching control, adaptive switching control, and their applications in the transient stability control and analysis of large-scale complex power systems. In large-scale complex power systems, renewable power generators, flexible power electronics converters, and distributed controllers are widely employed. Due to the poor overcurrent tolerance capability of power electronics converters and lacking of coordination mechanism, stability control in events, such as natural disasters, cascaded faults, and severe disturbances, is viewed as the key challenge in the operation of these systems. High-performance self-coordinated controllers are needed for the control of important power sources and power electronics converters. Adaptive switching controllers are a group of controllers designed by the authors for the control of various renewable power generators, synchronous generators, and modular multilevel converters. These controllers operate in a self-coordinated manner and aim to employ the largest transient control energy of converters and power sources. Imbalance between power generation and consumption is largely filled by the application of these controllers, and transient stability of power systems can be significantly improved. This book covers both the preliminary knowledge and key proofs in the design and stability analysis of adaptive switching control systems, and considerable simulation and experimental results are presented to illustrate the application and performance of the controllers. This book is used as a reference book for researchers and engineers in fields of electrical engineering and control engineering.

Book Nonlinear Control Synthesis for Electrical Power Systems Using Controllable Series Capacitors

Download or read book Nonlinear Control Synthesis for Electrical Power Systems Using Controllable Series Capacitors written by N S Manjarekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we derive asymptotically stabilizing control laws for electrical power systems using two nonlinear control synthesis techniques. For this transient stabilization problem the actuator considered is a power electronic device, a controllable series capacitor (CSC). The power system is described using two different nonlinear models - the second order swing equation and the third order flux-decay model. To start with, the CSC is modeled by the injection model which is based on the assumption that the CSC dynamics is very fast as compared to the dynamics of the power system and hence can be approximated by an algebraic equation. Here, by neglecting the CSC dynamics, the input vector $g(x)$ in the open loop system takes a complex form - the injection model. Using this model, interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC) methodology is demonstrated on two power systems: a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system and a two machine system. Further, IDA-PBC is used to derive stabilizing controllers for power systems, where the CSC dynamics are included as a first order system. Next, we consider a different control methodology, immersion and invariance (I\&I), to synthesize an asymptotically stabilizing control law for the SMIB system with a CSC. The CSC is described by a first order system. As a generalization of I\&I, we incorporate the power balance algebraic constraints in the load bus to the SMIB swing equation, and extend the design philosophy to a class of differential algebraic systems. The proposed result is then demonstrated on another example: a two-machine system with two load buses and a CSC. The controller performances are validated through simulations for all cases.
